WinXP PRO: Backup and Restore for HD upgrade?
ThC 129 replied to retrofire's topic in Everything New Technology
symantec products suck, they never seem to work right. At least that is my experience with em. For imaging use either PowerQuest Deploy Center or PQ Drive Image 2002. Both programs are just as good, you might want to run sysprep too if you are going to be installing the image on other boxes. -
Partition recovery program - thread i made months ago, where
ThC 129 replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Software
the best program i have seen is File Scavenger. It is $40 but it will recover lost partions that have been Fdisked or files that have simply been deleted. I had a partition die on me about a month or so ago, and this program ended up saving it for me. -
another MS bug that couldve been prevented. I think this is just a scheme to get people to upgrade to different OSes as they come out. I mean hell a lot of these serious bugs that pop up are just retarded. Bugs are expected to pop-up but some of these serious ones are just plain assinine

you need to find a file for via chipsets called testdriver.zip. This is a fix for the infinite loop error, it also works for random lockups and other errors that relate to DirectX. I had this problem with UT2k3 then i put the test driver on and it stopped em all together. ftp://downloads.viaarena.com/drivers/others/Test_driver1.zip

Is there any way to do this with task scheduler. I have not tried it yet i was just wondering. The reason is because i run an FTP server and I defragment my hard drives every night. So when my drives are defragmenting I want to stop the server, and when they are done start it again.

is there any way to tell me what services are running??

Stream ripper will work well you might also want to check out Total Recorder www.totalrecorder.com Soundforge www.sonicfoundry.com Most groups use Sound Forge to rip off the radio, but stream ripper will work fine for ripping audio streams. I like DJ Ciocomix off of DI.FM he is a good trance DJ. Not as well known as most big name DJs but still is good in his mixing.

After the recent slammer worm attacks. The hammer comes down and everyone is in a race to say "Its not me" and point the finger at someone else. I have heard it is a lot of SysAdmins' faults because they couldve secured their network better (any security links would help because this is SERIOUS and Im in my MCSE training so this is what im going to be doing). Then people say it is M$s fault for releasing a patch that breaks another patch, or having interlinked software to begin with. Others say Windows sucks don't use it. Then you have the people say that well you shouldve been using *nix, because it is more secure, and something like this would never happen. So whose fault is it, and more importantly how do we as internet users stop something like this from happening. The internet is becoming more and more a staple of urban life, and this recent attack even made ATMs useless and Seattle's 911 Service inoperable. So not only is this affecting networks, but other things people use in day to day life. The question left to ask is when and what is the next attack going to do?

the reason that I think drive image will not hide the partition is because if it s a logical partition it is on an extended one. So technically the logical partitions don't really exist, thus the word logical. So since the extended partition is not being hidden it might not do it. I have Deploy Center 5.0 and Drive Image 2002 (6.0) i will mess around with my partitions and see what i can't come up with.

A Program like norton internet security just not as bloated
ThC 129 posted a topic in Everything New Technology
I love norton internet security minus one thing.. its bloated like every other symantec program. I just don't know anything else that is incorporated into one program that has a personal firewall, and privacy/popup blocker, AND an anti-virus as good a NAV. So if i get all those programs seperate that would eat more resources and space So is there anything that would work as good as that one program, and not be like 4-5 different ones, or something that just doesnt eat like 1gb of ram and screw your system up? -
make sure that the user is listed under both computers. If Win2k or XP doesnt have the same users on either box the network will not see them. Also make sure that the secondary NICs are both on the same subnet, that will make networking them easier as well. It probably comes down to not having the same user on the browse master.

i guess your best bet in this case would be trial and error. Try and see how it works, and if it works well then cool if not ditch it and get something else.

the game worked fine for me on win2k. You need to find a no-cd crack.

I followed APK's Speedup and security guide. But for some reason when i deny IP protocols besides 6 and 17 i can't get on the internet. As soon as i check allow all it is fine though... is there a list of protocols i can try to see what is not making my connection work. Im on roadrunner, and everything else is fine.

thanks for the info. It seems not with recent attacks and everything else, that security is a big concern for people, so i would like to get a good handle on it on my own system before i go off into the IT world. Do you have any links or anything where i can read up more on IP security.

which is best to run... 16 or 32 bit color?
ThC 129 replied to doniej's topic in Everything New Technology
do you mean in games or in the desktop environment. Either way 32-bit is the way to go on most newer video cards because of the fact that it is more colors. With 32-bit color you can do many different things to it aswell, like alpha blending, better looking transparency effects. Im sure you can find more on the web but the best way to go is 32-bit. -
System will not logon user on after deploying an image
ThC 129 posted a topic in Everything New Technology
I made an image on Drive Image 2002, it was on a different hd than the one i have now. So I deployed the image to the new drive, and windows got to the logon screen but would not come up with a logon prompt or nothing just a dumb stupid LogonUI window in the middle of my screen. My question is how do i stop this from happening?? I would like to be able to use my image disks but windows will not let me logon. I even tried recovery console and it would not let me logon to the installation. So do i have to make a whole new image set to get this to work or what?? -
System will not logon user on after deploying an image
ThC 129 replied to ThC 129's topic in Everything New Technology
ah cool i thought i did that, and it mustve been on the wrong disk or something. One way or another i ended up losing a whole partition trying to get the damn thing too boot by f-in around with bootmagic. Got the partition data back mostly. A few things i wanted i couldnt get back, but i will have to try and f-around with it on an old hard drive or something. Thanks for the info, i assumed since it booted that it saw the boot signature fine. It wouldve been nice to find it in powerquest's knowledge base, but its too hard to hunt around for your answer in those sometimes =-/. -
ok now this is getting me pissed. This is the 2nd time ive had to format in 2 months due to the same f-ing problem. After some period of time AGP Texture acceleration just stops working. The only drivers i can get it working with are the 30.80 drivers which are ungodly slow compared to the 41.09 drivers which were working fine, but now don't anymore. I was wondering if anyone else has seen a problem like this before or not? Im really getting annoyed this never happened before but ever since i put this new video card in i have had this problem. Im going to find the cause of this problem and report it here. I don't want to have to format again but it seems that this is the only choice i have left since i can't use the 30.80 drivers since they suck.

yeah it might but in my eyes it is much better to have compatability and stability than it is to have nice features. How good is your API if it doesnt work.

I have a WD 80 gb drive, not the nice ones with the 8mb cache, just the regular old 80gb ATA 100 drive. Now this drive is about a year and a half maybe 2 years old. Now when the drive spins up, i get a kinda high pitched whirring sound. I thought it was the one of the fans on my video or mother board but when i put my ear close to my case i realised it was my HD. I ran chkdsk to check for bad sectors and it didnt find anything out of the ordinary, maybe 1 or 2. I havent had any of my other drives do this before, so Im wondering if i have a time bomb on my hands and my drive is going to crash or if there is something I can do to the drive (maybe something came loose) to get this to stop. I don't want to buy a new drive now if i don't have to. My monetary supply is tight as is. I was going to look on western digital's site but it seems to be down for the time being.
-
yeah it is my 60 gig drive not the 80. I took the drive out and looked underneath the drive to see if i could find anything visually wrong with it. Well on the underside of the platters the plastic is bubbling up, which means the drive is overheating so Im going to take a trip to bestbuy or compUSA and get another case fan or a hard drive cooler, and a new HD. Until Western Digital's site comes back online i can't RMA the drive. Damn SQL Worm.

cool, that way if anyone else has this problem they know how to fix it. Good deal, thx for the post

WHERE Windows XP store the autom. downloaded patches?
ThC 129 replied to mpower's topic in Everything New Technology
do you know when Sp2 is set to go into beta testing?? I was thinking that it should be pretty soon due to the fact that everything MS has on its platter is pretty much off the block, DX9, WMP9. So that leaves Sp 2 to be out soon.
