There's a format command, at least there was with NT, that allowed you to reallocate the drive from FAT to NTFS without destroying the data. Unfortunately, I have forgotten what the command was. You'll need to look it up on ze net somewhere. I imagine it's still present.

I just got me one of these boards, pleased as hell with it.. in Win98.. in win2k, only managed to get the NT drivers to do work, and poorly at that. According to diamond, the next fully Dx7 compliant drivers are supposed to work under win2k as well. Right. Here's hoping... Yes, there is a way of getting ntfs read/write support under Win9x, but you need certain files from the nt cd (suprise) to use it. the app is on chameleon's site (www.win2kbox.cjb.net) For getting in again, this is why people create emergency repair disks, and regularly back up their systems. I was poking around in my event logs, and I noticed a certain, probably bad trend.. It appears that every time I boot this box, I get a myriad of controller errors on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, and one or two errors on atapi device \Device\Ide\IdePort0. As this is likely A Bad Thing, I'd like a bit of advice as to what I could do to fix it.. Broken hardware is not a pleastant thought.. My system is : Win2k pro build 2195 Gigabyte 5AX motherboard (ALi M5229 based busmaster IDE controller) 256 meg PC100 ram PCI TNT card Voodoo2 SLI Adaptec AHA-154X SCSI adapter Ne2000 plus 10Mb ethernet Creative Ensoniq audiopci My hard drives are : Fujitsu MPC3043AT, Disk 2 Seagate SCSI drive, Disk 3 ST33240A, Disk 1 Western Digital Caviar AC24300L, Disk 0 (Boot drive with Win98 on it) Any help is much appreciated. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Since this thread looks like the beginning of a mighty flame-war, I'll keep my post short - If you buy a Voodoo3, you will regret it. I'm sad to say it, but you will. The technology is too old to run new games for very much longer. The ideal system to spring for is likely a GeForce or a TNT2, and a Voodoo2 SLI. nvidia's driver support for Win2k may be immature now, but it will pick up. And fast, as there are many owners of nvidia boards out there. And, I've never had a problem with my TNT1 under Win2000. So, if you want great next-gen tech, and don't mind waiting a few months for better drivers to materialize, plunk down the green for a brand new GeForce. If you want it to run great now, get a Voodoo3. Alright, a somewhat different question regarding getting Win2k back onto my box. I had a 98/NT/Win2k system, and I wanted to put Win2k (pro) over NT (server). Simple enough, I delete NT's WINNT dir, and get Win2k to install to that dir. However, this fails to operate as planned. Now, I am back to a bare 98 system, and Win2k will (usually) load ok, but when I change a setting - where the swapfile is and the locations of two drives that I use for swapspace - the system reboots and WILL NOT LET ME LOG IN. I tell you this is frustrating. It claims "Loading personal settings", the goes "saving settings" and dumps me back at the login. I'm running Win2k pro build 2194, and if anyone can help, I'd be much obliged. No offense, but are you daft? It is VERY simple to change drivers. Extract them from the .zip file to a temp directory. Open the Device Manager. Go to the Video Card. Click the "driver" tab. Click "update driver". Go to "display a list of other drivers". Click "have disk". Input the location where you extracted the drivers to. Reboot, once the drivers install. Viola. Well, there's always the fact that all of win2k's drivers are BETA! Dammit, when will you people learn that since the OS hasn't been released, final drivers won't be released either? Bah!

In my experience, anything less than 192 meg of ram is a waste of the install.. It just runs too slowly to do anything useful with. 256 meg on my system just flies. It's a nice feeling when the OS just zips around, and it never really touches swapspace. So my recommendation is 192+ megs 256 preferable. bjohn, man, all the new nVidia drivers won't run on RC2. You need to have RC3 or the Final build in order to use them. Tough luck, eh? I spend 4 days downloading Win2000 rc3, then it went gold, and then I just deleted it for Linux.
