There's a format command, at least there was with NT, that allowed you to reallocate the drive from FAT to NTFS without destroying the data. Unfortunately, I have forgotten what the command was. You'll need to look it up on ze net somewhere. I imagine it's still present.

I just got me one of these boards, pleased as hell with it.. in Win98.. in win2k, only managed to get the NT drivers to do work, and poorly at that. According to diamond, the next fully Dx7 compliant drivers are supposed to work under win2k as well. Right. Here's hoping... I don't really want to have to throw my old TNT PCI board back into this box. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Because... we enjoy mocking people with inferior hardware to our own? That, and I don't think there are any drivers in existence for the hardware you named.. Voodoo Rush? Damn, i didn't know anyone was dumb enough to buy one of those pos cards..3dfx's first failure at an integrated 2d/3d chip. Ugh. Buy new hardware. It will run much better. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Is that too much to ask?

Yes, there is a way of getting ntfs read/write support under Win9x, but you need certain files from the nt cd (suprise) to use it. the app is on chameleon's site (www.win2kbox.cjb.net) For getting in again, this is why people create emergency repair disks, and regularly back up their systems. Any way to get access now would also need a NT/w2k cd. Sorry man. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. I was poking around in my event logs, and I noticed a certain, probably bad trend.. It appears that every time I boot this box, I get a myriad of controller errors on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, and one or two errors on atapi device \Device\Ide\IdePort0. As this is likely A Bad Thing, I'd like a bit of advice as to what I could do to fix it.. Broken hardware is not a pleastant thought.. My system is : Win2k pro build 2195 Gigabyte 5AX motherboard (ALi M5229 based busmaster IDE controller) 256 meg PC100 ram PCI TNT card Voodoo2 SLI Adaptec AHA-154X SCSI adapter Ne2000 plus 10Mb ethernet Creative Ensoniq audiopci My hard drives are : Fujitsu MPC3043AT, Disk 2 Seagate SCSI drive, Disk 3 ST33240A, Disk 1 Western Digital Caviar AC24300L, Disk 0 (Boot drive with Win98 on it) Any help is much appreciated. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Since this thread looks like the beginning of a mighty flame-war, I'll keep my post short - If you buy a Voodoo3, you will regret it. I'm sad to say it, but you will. The technology is too old to run new games for very much longer. The ideal system to spring for is likely a GeForce or a TNT2, and a Voodoo2 SLI. nvidia's driver support for Win2k may be immature now, but it will pick up. And fast, as there are many owners of nvidia boards out there. And, I've never had a problem with my TNT1 under Win2000. So, if you want great next-gen tech, and don't mind waiting a few months for better drivers to materialize, plunk down the green for a brand new GeForce. If you want it to run great now, get a Voodoo3. I'm completely unhappy with my V3 2000 pci, tho, so. *shrug* Your call. - MousePad ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. I think that yuppie was get relieving a bit of anger at the constant, moronic questions that keep propagating over the board, regardless of how much flame we spout at the people who post them. And this poor moron just happened to be in the way at the time. - MousePad ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Alright, a somewhat different question regarding getting Win2k back onto my box. I had a 98/NT/Win2k system, and I wanted to put Win2k (pro) over NT (server). Simple enough, I delete NT's WINNT dir, and get Win2k to install to that dir. However, this fails to operate as planned. Now, I am back to a bare 98 system, and Win2k will (usually) load ok, but when I change a setting - where the swapfile is and the locations of two drives that I use for swapspace - the system reboots and WILL NOT LET ME LOG IN. I tell you this is frustrating. It claims "Loading personal settings", the goes "saving settings" and dumps me back at the login. I'm running Win2k pro build 2194, and if anyone can help, I'd be much obliged. Oh, and if someone can open their boot.ini file and post the syntax for setting how NT boots, I'd be much obliged. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. No offense, but are you daft? It is VERY simple to change drivers. Extract them from the .zip file to a temp directory. Open the Device Manager. Go to the Video Card. Click the "driver" tab. Click "update driver". Go to "display a list of other drivers". Click "have disk". Input the location where you extracted the drivers to. Reboot, once the drivers install. Viola. Sorry if this is slightly incoherent, but I'm drunk at the moment. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Well, there's always the fact that all of win2k's drivers are BETA! Dammit, when will you people learn that since the OS hasn't been released, final drivers won't be released either? Bah!
-
In my experience, anything less than 192 meg of ram is a waste of the install.. It just runs too slowly to do anything useful with. 256 meg on my system just flies. It's a nice feeling when the OS just zips around, and it never really touches swapspace. So my recommendation is 192+ megs 256 preferable. Anything less, would be uncivillized. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Is that too much to ask?

bjohn, man, all the new nVidia drivers won't run on RC2. You need to have RC3 or the Final build in order to use them. Tough luck, eh? I spend 4 days downloading Win2000 rc3, then it went gold, and then I just deleted it for Linux.

Yes he does. We've dealt with this question a billion times, and are getting quite tired of it.
-
it's a depressingly huge download for the bandwidth impaired.. I know, I dragged build 2194 off an ftp, and it was 280 megs total. Ugh. Never will I do _that_ again.

Actually, you won't see too much flame on this any more. We're all too damn tired of reading posts from newbie idiots saying "Why won't this hardware work?". Evenutually, they may learn, but it is rather unlikely. And for Sebu, USE THE F*CKING SEARCH OPTION!! IT'S THERE FOR A REASON YOU DUMB SH*T! Just had to get that off my chest, thanks. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Is that too much to ask?

Alright, here's my problem. I have a triple-boot system (Win98, WinNT4, and Win2k build 2194) and I want to remove Win2k from my system. Normally, this wouldn't be a problem, I'd just format the drive and carry on my merry way. However, the new bootloader that comes with Win2k has overwritten the old NT bootloader, and I want to get it back. How do I go about doing this? Thanks.. Well, he said it was coming up as a MS ps/2 mouse, and my Intellimouse does that, too. My wheel worked properly, though, so I can't say. Maybe you could try installing Intellipoint. That usually helps when the mouse is being a slut. I-point 3 will be the best, if you can get it, but 2.<whatever> should work fine for you.

I use them not because.. I am a cowardly bastard, and I have an older set of hacked drivers that were floating on #efnet, which seem to work pretty good. Muah. ------------------ Just once, I'd like to see an elementary particle physicist use *ZOT* when referring to accelerator operations. Is that too much to ask?

D:\<whatever> refers to the location of your CD-drive.

They work great for me. Preform better under Win2k than they do in NT or 98.
-
The drivers that come with Win2k do not have D3d or OpenGL support. You must get NEW drivers for this. Get new drivers, then try it out. I'm going to assume that you are technically ept enough to install them by yourself.

If money's no issue, why not go for a new, swank LCD or plasma screen? Something truly cool you can brag about. -

You know.. this question has been asked..
