Hi all, I recently had a hard drive failure. Fortunately I have backups. However my question is - I had Outlook as a mail client. Now i have \program...\office\ etc backed up. But after re-installing Outlook, which files do I need to get my mail folders (there were multiple folders) back? Thanks, Steve

Same problem here! Only for me I think it seems to happen when dragging and dropping and mpeg onto windows media player. Funny thing is, this only started happening when i installed the sblive official win2k drivers..... My system: SBLive, Voodoo3 2000, dual PIII 550, 256MB Ram, Supermicro PDB6(I think).... No idea on how to fix this but it's annoying. Garbage but machine still pklays mpg and also is responsive... Anyone any ideas?

Same problems here - dual PIII w/ 256 RAM running pro - sblive becomes very inconsistent in UT - sound drops etc. Does it maybe have anything to do with the amount of voices? Or the amount of simultaneous waves which can be played? Also does anyone know of a good UT sound player, I like the songs.... Cheers, Steve

What's so great about linux huh? Well let's see. It's free. 0 dollars. $0. How much does Windows2k pro go for? Around 250 for a full version I believe. Secondly I have three machines. One Dual PIII 500 - running win2k. Why? Because I use Windows apps etc for coding / playing games / e-mail etc. etc. However my other two machines are linux. One is a firewall at home, a pentium 100 w/ 16 megs of ram. It's been up for 162 days now, no maintenance, and with those specs 2k wouldn't even boot. The other machine is hooked up to the network and my stereo in another room. I can remotely telnet in, play mp3's etc, and even use an xserver for windows to login graphically. Linux does not fit all applications for all people. if it does the job for you, use it you will like it. And with the advent of such distributions as Corel and Mandrake it is not thatr hard to use. But IMO if u are gonig to use a computer seriosuly u might as well know how to operate your system. reading is a good thing. Cheers, Steve

While we're on the topic.... Why is that when I boot up w/ minimal background programs running, I start with 76 used. However after launching a couple of programs etc. and closing thwem again, the system is usually up to around 90~100. Now this isn't too big of a deal, but I am still curious as to why this happens, and any way to remedy it. Cheers, Steve

100 sounds awefully high to me. Is this a workstation? Mine boots w/ 78 meg w/ nothing running. If you are running pro or server trying turning off some of the services. Are you sure you don't have anything else running? Seti takes up quite a chunk-o-ram. Cheers, Steve

Greetings, My current set up is as follows: Win2k Pro, Dual PIII 500, 128M RAM, one 6 gig HD and a 13 gigger. Currently, C Drive where win2k is installed is 6 gig's, half of the 13 gigger. D is a software RAID drive of 12 Gigs, the 6 that's left from the 12 and the other 6 gigger. Is this a decent setup? Striping RAID btw. is there anyway to install on software raid? Cheers, Steve

I see some drivers have been found that work w/ it on todays news, but the link is broken..... any help anyone? Cheers, Steve

OH ****! You have the AND the min set to 200? By doing so you have limited the amount of ram and the OS is gonna start thrashing disk like crazy cause the hard drive to catch on fire and send electrical pulses through the nieghbourhood causing each microwave to emit deadly rays killing all. On a more serious note that sounds fine to me. I suggest everyone reads the FAQ and ntfaq.com they have a section on swap files. I have mine placed on two drivers, and i havwe a total of 256 MB (I have 128 RAM). This seems to work fine. IMO if your computer works and it works ok then you're swap file is probably fine.

Hey all, I am curious, are there any major difference between server and pro in terms of low level kernel coding? I mean if you run Server w/ all services turned off etc. other than the ones that professional runs, is it basically the same OS other than licensing cost etc? I know NT Server and Workstation were the same basically, is this still the case? 2nd, minor problem, when trying to play unreal it insists my CD isn't in the CDROM even though I am sure it is, I've tried both of em. It doesn't seem to find it? Cheers, Steve

Guys, I don't know what I did, but this is the weirdest probelm ever. I right click on the desktop, and select properties. Now usually the first tab would be to select the background. It is not there. The first one is screen saver, followed by appearance, web, effects and settings. Where the hell did my background properties go? Cheers, Steve

Seeing a reply got me all hot and bothered oh well. Yes indeed it is. Someone on IRC suggested some kind of secuirty setting not allowing people to change the background? Anyone? Cheers, Steve

As far as I know (And I have the same web cam) we are outta luck until slow-ass Creative decides to release drivers :-( Cheers, Steve

In 2183 Builld of Win2k Pro, there was a mouse pointer theme called inverse I believe, it basically took the colors of whatever was under the mouse and inversed them; it was nmy mouse pointer of choice. Win2k Server 2195 which I currently use does not have this? Could anyone make it available? Thanks Steve

Did you edit the .inf file from seldzar's site to reflect your voodoo's clock speed? Cheers, Steve

As a general rule, upgrades are not usually a good idea, if at all possible do an install. Especially moving from Windows 98 (8-bit dos based or is that 16?) to a Windows NT kernel (32-bit) is gonna be problamatic. That being said, it has been done before and some people have gone through the upgrade succesfully. However, again, if u can, do a fresh install. Cheers, Steve

What's wrong w/ Hearts? Next thing you'll be bashing Solitaire too huh? ;-) Cheers, Steve

Peaje, Indeed dual PIII's (same as I have) are nice, but keep in mind that UT as far as I know is only one proc capable. Therefore it really is only running on a single PIII. Keeping that in mind, it does basically get a dedicated PIII for the other chip can take care of the OS's needs. Cheers, Steve

Windows 2000 Professional Pre-Installed Systems Will Not Inc

And say that in the course of action Joe Shmoe decides he wants to try out Corel's Linux, or Linux-Mandrake. Very viable, I've had several co-workers want to borrow my Corel Linux CD. And they go home, figure, you know I can wipe this HD clean if I don't like Linux I'll go back to 2000. And some will like Corel's linux and stick to it. Others won't. And when they find out that they have no way of reinstalling 2000.... What is Microsoft so afraid of? It seems to me they are so worried about piracy etc. due to the ridiculously (SP?) high cost of Windows 2000. IF you think about it you are handing over more than $300 for a piece of plastic. Granted this plastic has couple millions lines of code etched into it but still. If MS wants Win2k to be as popular as 95 was, they might wanna rethink their pricing scheme and realize that non-business type want thsi product too. Cheers, Steve -
Can you actually browse the samba share? Map network drives? Which version of Samaba / Win2k. Can you browse ther Samba shares w/ win98? What security level did you set Samba smb.conf to? Cheers, Steve
-
Basically, as far as I am concerned, if you do not see any real drivers out right now, then don't ex[ect em until before win2k is released, which could be sooner than feb since some oem seem to be shipping the final code soon.... cheers, steve

C:\>help format Formats a disk for use with Windows 2000. FORMAT volume [/FS:file-system] [/V:label] [/Q] [/A:size] [/C] [/X] FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q] [/F:size] FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q] [/T:tracks /N:sectors] FORMAT volume [/V:label] [/Q] [/1] [/4] FORMAT volume [/Q] [/1] [/4] [/8] volume Specifies the drive letter (followed by a colon), mount point, or volume name. /FS:filesystem Specifies the type of the file system (FAT, FAT32, or NTFS). /V:label Specifies the volume label. /Q Performs a quick format. /C Files created on the new volume will be compressed by default. /X Forces the volume to dismount first if necessary. All opened handles to the volume would no longer be valid. /A:size Overrides the default allocation unit size. Default settings are strongly recommended for general use. NTFS supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K. FAT supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K, (128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes). FAT32 supports 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16K, 32K, 64K, (128K, 256K for sector size > 512 bytes). Note that the FAT and FAT32 files systems impose the following restrictions on the number of clusters on a volume: FAT: Number of clusters <= 65526 FAT32: 65526 < Number of clusters < 268435446 Format will immediately stop processing if it decides that the above requirements cannot be met using the specified cluster size. NTFS compression is not supported for allocation unit sizes above 4096. /F:size Specifies the size of the floppy disk to format (160, 180, 320, 360, 640, 720, 1.2, 1.23, 1.44, 2.88, or 20.8). /T:tracks Specifies the number of tracks per disk side. /N:sectors Specifies the number of sectors per track. /1 Formats a single side of a floppy disk. /4 Formats a 5.25-inch 360K floppy disk in a high-density drive. /8 Formats eight sectors per track. Insert your Win2k CDrom. Do a search on the CDROM (or i386 directory) for a file named win95upg.inf. Open that file, and on the seventh line down it will show you what version you have. Keep in mind, however, that this does not indicate whether or not you have the version set to expire in 120 days, as that has been cracked I believe in certain copies. Cheers, Steve
