Windows Me will be (and has always been) based on the 9x-Kernel. Microsoft needed a product upgrade to bridge the time between Windows 98 SE and its next-gen consumer OS based on the NT-kernel.

I can't locate the pre-installation patch that you mention for installing 3.5c under Windows 2000. Where may I download this? >TIA

What a f***ing crack-head... haven't you ever heard that Windows 2000 is intended to function as a business operating system? I don't know what type of businesses you've come across, but most don't have the need to run games, let alone old DOS emulators. However, there IS a need for OpenGL, Direct3D, etc... so hardware companies are releasing higher quality drivers (than those on the Win2k CD). Needless to say, Win2k is going to be used for games, but you've no right to ***** about it not working for old games that weren't even designed for Windows. Microsoft made it fully clear that if you want a gaming OS, wait for Windows ME. If you want an OS for your business, then consider Windows 2000. They drew a line and made anyone who was intelligent enough to do their research aware of this fact. Besides, since when did everything work on Windows 98? What about the upgrade path to Windows 95 from 3.x? If you were as experienced as you claim, then you'd know this. Shut up and drop this ridiculous flame war. I am running Adaptec Easy CD-Creator 4.02 and the drive is properly recognized as a burner. But as soon as I put a CD in the drive (usually while the prog. is running), I get the unplugged error. I disconnected the drive in Windows, reconnected it, and then rebooted (as u suggested).. it still didn't help. I uninstalled the drive and had Win2k automatically set it up again.. still f***ed up.

The hardware is recognized automatically on my system and is even listed as a "Mitsumi USB CD-R/CD-RW" drive. The problem is that it doesn't function as a burner. It's fully functional as a plain run of the mill CD-ROM drive, but it isn't recognized as a burner by any software except Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02. And although it seems to work as a burner in this software, as soon as I try to write to a CD (or access ANY type of CD) in the drive, Windows 2000 spits out an error, claiming that I've unplugged the drive even though it's still physically connected. Even more strange is the fact that Windows still thinks the drive is there. So it's claiming the drive is unplugged but then Windows knows its still there. Any help would be much appreciated. And by the way, the included software from NTI doesn't recognize the drive as a burner either. TIA> PS: I've never seen those NT Service errors that you mentioned.

Does anyone know how to get MITSUMI's 4802TU Portable External CD-RW Drive (USB) to work under Windows 2000. It works as a regular CD-ROM drive, but isn't recognized as a burner. Thus no burning software under Win2k recognizes it as such either. Any ideas?

Is there anyway to do this on a more global basis so that everyone could enter anonymously, or using the same password for their login name (whatever they choose)?

I'm running Win2k 2195 on a laptop that's usually connected to a network at school. I'd like to put some files up on the network (and most people are too computer illiterate to use FTP) so I need to share folders; the problem? Everytime I share a folder and someone on the network tried to open it, they receive a password request. This is regardless of whether I set a password or not (and my admin pass doesn't work). What I did notice is that the password request dialog box makes a reference to $IPC, one of the special shared folders used for networking. I assume that I have to edit the user permissions when I share a folder, so can anyone tell me which to edit (if I want to give authorized access to other people on the network.. oh and it functions as a workgroup, not a domain). Any help would be much appreciated.

I have Windows 2000 installed on my Dell Inspiron 7000 notebook and all is well, except for two things. First is the lack of support for my hardware DVD decoder... but that's not a major setback since I can use a software player. The second problem, however, is that I can't get OpenGL to work under Windows 2000. Any suggestions? (BTW, are they Win2k drivers for the ATI Rage Pro chipset? The Mobility can sometimes use drivers that are intended for the Pro chipset). Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. I found all of the warnings about incompatibilities very comforting BTW, have you read Microsoft's official statement regarding the IntelliMouse Explorer? Check it out! [This message has been edited by Raze2k (edited 27 December 1999).]

I just purchased a Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer (the optical mouse with two additional buttons), only to find out that the included IntelliPoint software (required for the additional buttons) doesn't work with Windows 2000. How absurd is that? You'd think that Microsoft would have seen the Win2k problem coming

Does anyone know of any CD creation app that supports USB burners? At the moment, I'm stuck with a version of NTI CD-Maker Pro designed specifically for my drive... I've tried Adaptec EZ CD Creator 4.01, but it only supports IDE and SCSI drives. Thanks in advance for any help!

Quick question... Does that convert to NTFS or NTFS 5.0?

A couple of weeks ago, I got the MITSUMI 4802TU External CD-RW Drive (USB) for my Dell Inspiron 7000 notebook. Windows 2000 recognized the drive automatically (despite claims from the distributor -- Pacific Digital -- that the drive only worked on Windows 98); plus it seems to be using hardware specific drivers. Anyway, the drive works fine but I've yet to test it's recording capabilities. I use Windows 98 as well, and usually just use that for burning. Has anyone actually tried using Win2k for recording CD's to a USB driver -- ideally, to a Mitsumi drive? Oh and by chance, does anyone know of any software that supports USB burners? At the moment, I'm stuck with a version of NTI CD-Maker Pro designed specifically for my drive... I've tried Adaptec EZ CD Creator 4.01, but it only supports IDE and SCSI drives. Thanks in advance for any help!
