Ok, I've spent a while screwing with win2k, almost gave up and put 98 back in when I found out a few little tricks to get things working right. First of all, driver conflicts were a *****, and some just didn't work. My advice if you're having trouble is to remove all video drivers, let win2k boot up and choose default ones, then try to upgrade them. If that doesn't work, you can attempt adding new hardware and removing the old device. I'm using some aopen TNT drivers now. 3.6.5 were problematic, but I may go back later. As for SMP, I got it to work before, but it's still buggy. Maybe with newer drivers I'll give it a shot, but too many times it totally hung windows. Many complained about a poor refresh rate. Some suggested hacking inf install files. There's a better way in q3. The /r_displayRefresh variable. ex: /r_displayRefresh 120 give you 120hz. Works great. To improve darkness, first tell q3 to ignore the hardware gamma using: /r_ignorehwgamma 1 then to adjust gamma: /r_gamma 1.8 (my preferred setting) That should get quake3 running much better and brighter than before. It's still not totally smooth for me yet, but I'll try other drivers and continue tweaking.

Yes, you should be able to boot off of the ata66 drive. The controller is basically functioning like a scsi device, can you boot off scsi drives? As for win2k support.. it varies. Highpoint Technologie's card works fine for win2k. (card sold by abit, integral hpt support is in the bp6). Is there a performance benefit? Not that I could really tell. Most drives won't get near 33mb/sec. The fastest drives sustain only around 20 megs per second I believe. Check some benchmarks on the web. It's really not all that worth it for speed in my opinion.

Ok, got it working. I used the 3.56 nvidia drivers, which got me into q3, but crashed immediately. I then used the ogl dll from the newest 3.65 and it works - sorta. I can play, however I get these big yellow screens sometimes. If I drop to console they go away, but they come back at random. Also, SMP just won't work. crashed like crazy with it enabled. Anybody have a better driver solution then my idea? q3 is also really dark. Is there a fix for this yet, or should I just up the monitor brightness? Ok, grabbed the ASPI adaptec package from your site and it works. As for the video, I loaded the 3.56 drivers from seldzar's site (yours didn't work for some reason) and now ogl works, but q3 hangs on the intro where the id logo is stamped out. Gonna search the forums for ideas, any of your own? ------------------

Well, I'm running at Dec 25, 2010 right now. No time bomb.. Unless Microsoft devised some very tricky time-bomb, I think it's a load of bull****. MS will make so much cash off this OS they probably don't give a damn about people copying it and getting pre-releases. If anything, it'll help increase the product support having people running around hacking drivers to work for games and making an impact on other companies to hurry win2k support.

Ok, I just got my dual 550 and win2k pro 2195 running. Everything is great. However, I'm having two problems. 1 - I use an adaptec controller and a plextor 8/20 cdr. The adaptor is configured fine, but no cdr software seems to see it. Any ideas? 2 - I run a TNT (yeah, the original) and can't seem to get opengl to work for Q3. I tried the latest Nvidia 3.65 (?) drivers? I've been reading posts and it seems everybody has their own preferred hacked up drivers. What can you guy recommend? Thanks alot in advance for the help.
