    Upgrade time

LM, let me know when you decide, and why you decided that option becuase i need to upgrade this summer and i was thinking about a dual celeron system (then overclock) or maybe a faster single athlon. and, seeing as i'm not made of money, i'll need the setup to last a couple of years until i finsih education and get a decent job. So it owuld be cool if you could let me know what you decide

Media Player 7.0 is out (BETA)

Is there any safe way of uninstalling media player7 and going back to the player that comes with win2k? i'm fed up with this beta now.

Media Player 7.0 is out (BETA)

i don't know if anyone else has had this problem but i found media player to take ages to load up files. For example i've got some simpson sound clips and on winamp they load instantly and on media player 6.4 but with the version7 they take about 20secs to load up. apart from long load times it seems to fine to me

    DMA mode not working, why??

Ok, i have a toshiba 6x DVD (SD-M1302) and a creative 48x CD-ROM (4832E). I'm using the ALi V chipset (ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller) on a BCM VP1543 motherboard SS7(yes i know i should get a more heard of better motherboard but i needed a cheap motherboard and quickly) Both devices on my secondary IDE cable. Anyway, i can't seems to get either device to use DMA mode in win2k? i've set it to "use DMA if available" but they still both use PIO mode. I'm using the default drivers for the chipset and drives that win2k put on, and there aren't any updates around, or so i believe. Does anybody have any idea why this might be happening? (if you need more info on my machine just ask) BTW, i would suggest people do go and check they are using DMA mode becuase when i went into mirc for some help a couple of people looked and they were using PIO mode too, but they could turn DMA when they changed the settings, bastards. Cheers for any help i may get.

    DMA mode not working, why??

ok, i've fixed my problem, there was a new bios out couple of days ago so i put that on and my my DVD_ROM is now detected as ultra DMA, my CD-ROM is DMA, and my zip drive is also DMA. so thats good. only bad thing is that i can't watch DVDs anymore it doesn't seem to like my have UDMA, major bummer, so its back to PIO mode for me for now.

    Problems with PowerDVD in Win2k

Ok i've solved my not able to get DMA problem, a new bios version was out a couple days ago for my motherboard although in the description it didn't say anything about my prob it seems to have worked, yeah!! BUT, now none of my players detect the DVD movie in the drive. powerDVD just sits their and i can't do anytihng with the system, nothing works except manual reboot. Using the software that comes with the hollywood+ it tries to access drive but after abou 10sec it says there is no disk in the drive and ejects the disk! using pcfriendly it can't start the movie, and says my drive may not be able to play that type of video. So, i'm forced back to PIO mode, what a complete an utter C%*T!!!

    Problems with PowerDVD in Win2k

i'm using an ALI V chipset so i get ALi M5229 PCI Bus Master IDE Controller. At the moment its only my hard drive (Maxtor 10.8gb ATA33) using DMA. My internal zip drive, toshiba SD-M1302 6x dvd 32x cd-rom, and creative 48x cd-rom all use PIO mode. I'm not concerned that the zip drive doesn't use DMA (not even sure it can) but i'm about 95% sure that my DVD and CD-ROM should use DMA.

    Problems with PowerDVD in Win2k

Ok, so if i get my DVD drive to use DMA it should run smooth, cool. only problem i went to the toshiba website to check out my DVD drive, Toshiba 6x (SD-M1302), and in the specs page i found that it had a, Burst Data Transfer Rate:16.7MB/s (PIO Mode 4) And i couldn't find anything saying DMA mode, so this i suppose menas it won't support DMA. But how come, its the companies newest, dvd drive model. and somebody here got DMA to work on a 2x DVD drive. there must be something i'm not doing right here. I've got my drive on the same cable as my creative 48x CD-ROM drive which should also support DMA, yes? but no thats still on PIO mode. any advise?

    Problems with PowerDVD in Win2k

i've forgotten how makes my board but i know i have the latest bios for it. controller card? i juse use the IDE socket on the motherboard into which my bogstandard IDE cables are attached. (my hdd is detected as DMA though) the drivers i use for that are the ones that come standard with win2k and my voodoo3 has the latest drivers. so, i'm still unsure as to why it won't detect as DMA. would it improve the DVD playback (i.e. will it make the movie less jerky) and nobody said anything about enabling the hardware accelerator function in powerdvd

    Problems with PowerDVD in Win2k

I got a problem with changing my drive to DMA, i've set it to "DMA if avialable" but it alsways detects my toshiba 6x drive as PIO. So how can i get around this? Also, with powerDVD in its options in the video tab the box to use a hardware accelerator is greyed olut and says is only available in stop mode. how do i get to stop so i can turn this on?

    Question about bleem

I wasn't sure weither to post this in apps or games so i'll put it in both. Theres an app in the support folder on the win2k cd, apcompat.exe, that from what i see can let you choose to install the program so that it thinks its in win98/95/NT4. So would this work for bleem? if not do you think the makers of bleem will produce a win2k compatible emulator or does anyone know of any other emualtors that work under win2k? (becuase i really want to play tony hawks, why can't it come out on pc?!?) cheers

What a 48 hours that was

Just thought i'd write in to tell you about my last 48 hours, its been hell. ok, for a little while now i've been worried about my monitor because it seemed that my fairly new radio controlled logitech mouse was causing some kind of interference. and, i thought i remembered someone saying about if the monitor and mouse are at the same frequency this might cause my problem. (now i think it was a monitor and radio being at similar frequencies) anyway, for some reason i thought if i put the logitech mouseware v9 back on my system in the program would be the option to change the frequencey (i was actually thinking about the thing ps2rate does!) so, i start the installation it gets right near the end and next thing i know its rebooted the computer, normal i thought. but oooh no. From there normally ir would get stuck halfway during bootup, just after win2k restarts the machine (its has the win2k logo and built on NT technology with the little startup bar) normally it would just reboot itself also causing my keyboard not to responed next boot. sometime it would just hang i would need to reboot by switching the PSU on and off (becuase the power button wouldn't work), i tried it in safe mode, couldn't get into win2k rung mid boot, then i tried last known good config but that also just rung mid boot, i tried the debug option (haven't a clue what it does but hey..) that didn't work either, then i tried safe mode with command prompt, it works back into win2k, great i thought! i uninstalled the mouseware and removed the mouse from system manager and rebooted thinking that it would auto detect mouse as it was before and everything would be hunky dorey (great). but, no it just hung mid boot again, and again, and again, with the keyboard only working now and again i was getting very pissed off. i tried declocking my cpu, resetting bios, everything, but still no luck. so in the end i took out my hdd put in my brothers machine (which i just happened to have for the weekend, building it up for him) and backed up all my important work, well what i could squeeze on his 4.3gb from my 108gb. then i formatted my hdd partitions back to fat32, from his comp running win2k. Put the hdd back in mine used my win98 startup disk to get my cd-rom drive and proceeded to reinstall. everything seemed to be going fine until i got to the last part of installing when it was regestering my files and about to save them when i had some sort of kernel error message, so i rebooted in hope that it wouldn't happened again but what is this, my keyboard not working properly the computer hanging and just rebooting itself!! how i formatted the ****er! anyway, after another 3 or 4 formatts i decided to repartition the hdd and everything went to reinstall win2k, again right near the end when it was regestering my files and saving i get some kernel error machine reboots and starts rebooting its self. this was over saturday and sunday, when i came in from college today i swapped motherboard, took out all my cards except video, used different keyboard, repartitioned hdd again and formatted, installed win2k, and yeah it worked!!! put all my cards and everything back in still working, about bloody time. Two days of almost throwing my computer out of the window all at Logitechs fault, bastards i'll bloody have them. i still don't know why just putting on the mouseware would **** up my comp like that. i mean i've been running win2k RC2 and then the final release since about november, and i think i've had 1 crash (that wasn't game incompatibility related) Anyway, sorry my post was soooo long, but thought i'd tell someone.

network neighborhood is sooo slow in w2k

your finding it very slow to find the hard drives on the other machine yeah? i bet those other machines are either win98 or win95. well becuase with me i had win2k and my friends had win9x. the actual network was peachy but it took a long while to find the hard drives (or shared folders) on the win9x machines. if you put 2 win2k machines together, super fast access!! if i'm wrong, whoops.

What a 48 hours that was

ok. so i've checked my old motherboard justto make sure it was broken, and yeap it is. the keyboard won't work and it reboots mid boot. how could me putting the logitech driverson cause this to my motherboard?? Also, i got a motherboard quick of a mate, and it looks identical. same chipset, same bios, same markings on board (eg. all the info about clock settings and cpu voltage exactly same layout and jumper settings) but its made by a different manufactorer but whats weird is that fact the board won't let me clock my cpu to 500 (5*100). well i say that but, it detects it as 500 in bios and in windows. in windows it seems pretty stable but as soon as i load up UT it just reboots the machine within about 2mins. Now i'm using exactly the same cooling as before i've tried it at 2.2v, 2.4v, and 2.8v (2.8v is what i had it running on old board) Could my crash have caused some kind of problem in the cpu?? it works flawless at 450(4.5*100) and 475 (5*95)

    Rollcage under Win2k

i got the same prob as you, i think its just a case of people who make rollcage (forgot there name) needing to release a win2k patch. or it could be your geforce drivers, but i had same prob with voodoo3 so don't thinks its that.
