    512Meg of SDRAM

Just so you guys know, there is an issue with irq 9 in win2k. Ive seen this about 3 times now. For some reasons, certain configurations will get stuck with having all expansion cards placed on irq 9. video, sound, network, modem, etc. etc. The reason for this, as far as i know, is unknown. There is a fix though. Like clutch said, it has to do with ACPI controlling your irqs. You have to turn it off. I know this sucks, but its better than an unstable system. In order to turn it off, you must install the OS in Standard Mode. When you begin the install of win2k, if you look at the bottom of the screen it will ask you to push f6 for scsi and raid drivers. When it asks you to do this, push F5. This will bring up a little menu that has a few different options, one of them being Standard Mode. Select it and continue on with the install. When install is finished, you will notice that irq 9 will only have one device on it. Hope this helps for future reference...
  2. hey guys...i have a little problem. I am migrating a novell/groupwise 5.5 network to a Win2k/Exchange 2000 network. My question is, how do i migrate the NAB's (novell address books) created in groupwise into Microsoft Outlook? I need to copy all of my users' contact lists into outlook. Im sure there has to be a way, but the obvious way: file --> import --> blah blah does not work because novell/groupwise is not one of the options. Clutch, or other network guys, got any suggestions? Has anyone ever done this before? Thanks in advance.

    Clutch...and other network gurus...

Thx a lot for trying to help me on this guys. Well, after many many hours of researching and playing with these things, i finally figured it out. I'll tell you what i did so that if this ever comes up again we know how to fix it. Anyways, ryoko..you were on the right track. You have to export the .NAB files as *.nab format. Then when you import from outlook, you have to select: import from another file or program --> Comma Seperated Value (Windows) --> browse to where you exported the NAB file and select it --> click next until you get the option to modify the fields to fit the new outlook fields. Then click okay --> click finish and you should be good to go. There were some slight formatting problems...basically it was just a little ugly. To fix that, i opened the CSV files in Excel and modified the way it looked a little. Thank you very much for looking into this. I really appreciate it.

First of all, if you would've read my second reply i stated that the video lag didn't come from the servers but from your machine. Secondly, when you state that diablo was intended more for single player then, as you so intricately put it, you need your head examined. Blizzard has probably the best online gaming area (battlenet) out of anyone around right now. In fact both betas they did for D2 and D2x were not "to see how good the game is," but to test battle net. Thats why they were called Battle Net Betas! Your comment on Anarchy having thousands of users on at once being the cause of server problems, well, multiply that by at least 2 and thats how many people were trying to log onto battlenet. Your attempt at a point there totally negated your comment about battle net sucking when D2 was first released. Another comment on the graphics....the game was worked on for how long before it was released? I think at least 2 and a half years. Do you understand the graphic enhancements achieved since the beginning of D2 creation? You notice how act 1 looks like $hit compared to 3 and 4? Act 1 was finished over a year before the game was done. I know this because i have a friend that works at blizzard. That is probably why i defend them so valiantly, but it will also add light to my arguments being that i get this information straight from blizzard. You say D2 will not stand the test of time, yet they've sold millions and millions of copies and continue to have more overall sales than almost any game out. Not to mention the fact that they've already anounced Diablo 3! You think a game like anarchy online will stand the test of time??? If so, then IMO, you seriously lack taste in games. Your comment on RPG's....well, d2 is described as an Action Role Playing Game. It is simple when you think about it. It is non stop action with not much dialogue or story, hence the "Action" part of the genre. But, you still choose a character class that you build from level one while changing statistics, proficiencies, magic, inventory, and all the other aspects thrown into RPG's which contributes to the RPG portion of the genre. No one said it was solely an RPG. Oh, and my argument about Screen lag with resolutions going hand in hand with Latency online is not flawed. If you payed attention i stated that with higher resolutions the computer user has to worry about both Internet lag AND graphic lag due to the slowness of their computer. By making it so no one could go higher in resolution they eliminated the complaints about graphic lag due to slower machines. If you go to battle net forums or Diabloii forums you will get a chance to read what the ladder players are saying about lag. The sorceress spells Firewall, Meteor, Blizzard, etc. and a few of the other skills from other characters were SPECIFICALLY given a timer due to the amount of graphic lag they caused. People would complain non stop about these spells causing too much lag when spammed all over the screen. Now, imagine those spells at 1024x768. You could pretty much multiply the lag by 3 if the res was as high as 1024. Of course, i know there were many other reasons why higher resolution couldn't be achieved, but this was surely a thought when designing this game. And about the weather on one screen being different is due to a random generated effect coming from the computer and not the servers. You can turn weather off in the options. But are you saying if you do that, and you are the host of the game, then all weather will turn off on all machines?!?! No...thats just silly. Your comment on D2 not being innovative and not offering any real new aspects to the game is completely false. Here are some new enhancements: 1.) like you said, 5 different characters 2.) All the new characters had their own skill sets that could be developed to high levels. This meant that you couldn't make a fighter that was also able to hold a staff and cast lightning spells like in the first Diablo. Each character had 3 different skill trees to customize and develop. The array of possibilities with these new characters were so much greater than Diablo 1. This added for a tremendous amount of replay value. For example: ice sorceress.....fire sorceress.....lightning sorceress. 3.) Hirelings to help you on your travels. This was a great addition if you liked single player because now you didn't have to travel alone. 4.) A multitude of different weapons which relied on certain characters proficiency levels and classes in order to wield them. 5.) Better graphics, prettier scenery. 6.) Longer, more in depth story line including 4 all new acts each with their own set of quests. 7.) Randomly generated maps which added a better replay value. 8.) Unique, Rare, and Set items. 9.) Gambling. Gave a better way to use your money and a chance to get uber weapons 10.) Waypoints. So that you can replay certain areas that provide more experience or better drops. Makes it easy to replay bosses as well. There are 10 items, and ive just begun to scratch the surface. There are many, many more. D2 went gold on presales due to fans reading about the new enhancements and wanting the game so bad. As you can see, your arguments are also flawed. If you wish to continue to debate, please feel free. After all, i work in IT as well, and i am quite bored right now.

Ummm, actually the resolution you run at doesn't affect the servers, it affects you. I retract that point of my argument. Have you ever played that game online? I have a geforce 2 pro with tbird 800 and 512 megs of ram and i lag out A LOT at 800x600. The problem is that there is so much commotion and action going on at once that it bogs your machine down. If you go higher, not only are you having to worry about the Latency, but now you are fighting with the speed of your computer. Another reason they didn't go higher is because creatures would spawn all at the same time on the screen whether you are next to them or not. So that would cause crashes. I bet they tried it at first and the amount of textures having to be rendered all at once completely crashed the machine. You ever played everquest? You notice the graphics on that game?? If blizzard allowed higher resolutions they would have to support them. This means severe testing (which would have delayed a game that had already been delayed about a year and was so eagerly awaited by EVERYONE) with different Display adapters at different res with different drivers. And like i said, there would be no way to have the game run as fast paced and as smooth as it does now if the res was higher. Its amazing how you can sit there and rip on one of the best selling games ever (and still going strong) because the resolution isn't high enough. You guys are the kind of guys that aren't ever happy with what you get. You probably eagerly await every patch to come just so little things that you don't like get changed. You pick the most trivial thing about the game to rip on. Thats fine if you don't like it, but in order for you to respond and flame me Viper, you must REALLY not like the game. Instead of whining about a great game loved by everyone, go find yourself a game you think is better and let the D2 community enjoy the one game that has taken over all our free time do to its greatness. P.S. In response to the original post.... Sorceress for life baby! (and im talking long before the whole fire wall and nova boom)

Blade runner, You don't know what you are talking about. As far as the graphics go, imagine having the busiest servers in the world and selling the most games in the world. Now throw in all the money you would need to have servers to support all those games playing on all those servers running HIGH END graphics! The game would be sooo slow and choppy that no one would care about graphics anymore, they would just want playability. So, instead of doing the inevitable, they saved themselves time and money and made the resolutions lower because they knew it would pose a problem in the long run. That is why the graphics are the way they are. This also allows lower end machines the ability to enjoy this game as well.

    Man....what am i doing wrong??

*sigh* i know ive asked you guys before, but i didn't get many replies and my problem is still at hand. I guess the bottom line is, i have a great system, but im getting HORRIBLE performance. In Half Life/Counterstrike i get an average of 40FPS!!!! The screen is so choppy...i can barely even play the damn game. What do you think is the problem?? Here are my system specs....with these specs i should be getting an average of around 70 FPS in half life. Asus A7V AMD Thunderbird 800 Mhz. Asus V7700 Geforce 2 GTS PRO 512 megs pc-133 micron RAM SBLive! 40 gig ATA-66 7200 RPM Western Digital drive I am running the 12.xx drivers off of Nvidia's site for my video card. Everything has latest drivers, DX8, pretty much everything is fully up to date. What is going on here? Anyone got any suggestions? Oh yeah, my refresh rate is 85hz. I have Vsync turned OFF. I am not running Anti Aliasing. Its just not making any sense to me. I would really appreciate the opinions of you avid gamers out there. Thanks guys.

    Man....what am i doing wrong??

Thx Donald...i will try that. At this point, i am willing to try anything. Its just not making sense. I used to get this kind of performance when i was running a celeron 400 with a voodoo 3 2000 pci. I'd hate to think i wasted all this money upgrading to a "supposedly" better system. Once again guys, i really appreciate the replies. I can usually count on this place to iron out the kinks i get with gaming. So, thanks again, and please keep em coming. Does anyone know why i would be getting this poor performance? What peripherals would cause this low performance with a high end machine?

    Man....what am i doing wrong??

Thx for the replies guys. Well, i guess i could try those drivers, although i doubt they will give me an extra 30 fps, but i guess ya never know. And yeah, i have the 4 in 1's installed. Anything else you guys think of?

    Logon Script NT/W9X

Okay...here goes: 1.) Make sure that they are set to logon to a domain. Go to your network properties, click on "client for microsoft network" and hit properties. There will be a check box there asking if you want this machine to logon to a domain. Check the box and enter in the name of the domain in the place provided. Reboot. 2.) When the logon screen comes up, it will have an extra field called domain. So now, you are using NT domain accounts to logon just as if you were using win2k or nt for clients. 3.) The next thing you want to do is create a batch file that is set to run everytime a user logs in. A batch file is basically just DOS commands that are executed in order when the batch file is run. For instance, if you want every user to login and get a mapped drive to your file server's D:\ drive, then the command would look somethign like this: "net use x: \\servername\D:" Put that command in a file and name it "something.bat" 4.) After you have your batch file, you need to make the domain controller know to run it everytime a user logs in. In an NT server, there is a default share called NETLOGON that points to a path on the server. I believe the path is c:\winnt\system32\Rep\Imports\Scripts. If you put this batch file in that directory on the domain controller, the client machines will automatically look there for a file to run at startup. 5.) The next and final step is to have all user accounts specify the name of the file you wish to run at login. These accounts already know to look at the share NETLOGON (which is actually mapped on the server to c:\winnt\system32\Rep\Imports\Scripts). So, if the account is going to look there automatically, you have to tell it what file to look for in that directory. To do this, go to your domain controller, pull up the "user manager for domains," and go to the properties for all your users one at a time. In the properties there will be a section called "profile." Go to that section and you will see a field called login script. That is where you want to put the name of the batch file you created. So, everytime that user logs in, his machine automatically looks to the NETLOGON share and looks for a file that you specified in there profile options. If it finds the file, then it will run it and you will have mapped drives. Hope this helps...good luck
  14. Ummm, i believe that only pops up if you want the network connectivity icon (the two little blinking computers) in the systray at all times. If you go to your network properties and uncheck the "show icon in taskbar when connected" box, then you shouldn't get anything popping up in your systray. I think this is what you are talking about, but i could have misunderstood the problem. Anyways, hope that helped.

    Motherboard won't boot...

God brian...it could be anything. Ummm, first try switching around some RAM. Take sticks out, put different ones in, that is, if you even have any others. Also check the voltage output switch on the back of the power supply. Make sure it didn't get accidently switched. Is the power supply spinning up when you turn the power on, or does it just sit there? If it isn't even spinning up, then most likely that is your problem. This may sound really silly, but change power cables/surge protector. This just happened to me recently. As soon as i changed it, it worked. If you try that and nothing happens, then its got to be a dead Power supply. GL.

    Can't run Quake 3 Arena in win2000/SP2

This one is pretty simple. Make sure you have the latest video drivers for your video card. Make sure your video card supports opengl. And lastly, reinstall the game. That is a pretty common error. It is ALWAYS due to vid drivers or bad installation. Hope that helps.

    GF2 drivers and halflife

Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone is using the reference detonator drivers on nvidia's site. The 12.xx ones...are they any good? Im still using the official detonator 3s. The reason i ask is because i am getting some crappy performance in Counterstrike. When there is no action and im just standing around i get 72 fps. When im actually doing stuff it drops down as low as 40 fps!!! This doesn't make any sense. CS should scream with my computer specs: Asus A7v 800 mhz. T-bird 512 megs pc-133 ram Asus V7700 Geforce 2 pro 64 meg ddr SBLive Western Digital 7200 RPM 40 gig ATA 66 drive Shouldn't i be getting better performance than a 40 - 50 fps average?? Is it the drivers? You guys have any input on this? Any help and/or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Win2k and Novell together

This is a mixed network consisting of novell and NT servers with 98 and a couple 2k workstations (don't ask me why...i didnt set it up). Anyway, you need to install the novell client on the 2k box in order to see the novell servers and shares. My only problem with this is that when you install the client it automatically becomes the default login client! So, instead of logging in with the Client for Microsoft Networks, i have to deal with the crappy novell client that is a lot more of a pain to work with. So my question is, does anyone know how to make the Client for Microsoft Networks the default login client??? There is no way of doing this in the network properties, but there has to be some kind of tweak to get this back to the way it was. After all, why would a Microsoft based client be pushed aside by a novell client if you are using a Microsoft OS!?!?! In NT you can just go to network properties and change the default login client to either "client for microsoft networks" or to "client for netware." So why isn't this option in 2k?? Is there any way to do it? Thanks in advance.

    Win2k and Novell together

well, clutch...you got me all excited with both of your replies, but unfortunately neither worked. GSNW comes with win2k server, but our servers here are NT4 (we are upgrading very soon). Soooo, i am pretty sure that is why the guy that worked here before me had the Novell client on all the workstations. And, the second post that, linked to the novell site there, seemed like a surefire way to fix it. But, i went through that process and it looked like everything went well, but it didn't take. I logged off and still had the novell login. So, i decided to reboot and when it came up i still had the novell client. This damn thing just won't give in... sheesh! Thanks a lot for your dilligence on this topic though, i really do appreciate it. If you find anything else out, please post it. Thanks again.

    Win2k and Novell together

Well, thx for your reply clutch, but the problem lies with the client machine...in this case, win2k Pro. You pretty much have to install the novell client on win2k pro in order to see the novell shares on the network. The server is running Gateway services for netware, which is why it is possible to get from the NT server to the Novell servers. Thanks for replying though. Any other suggestions? Anyone?

    Win2k woes.....

Hey guys, i need your help. Ive recently switched one of my gaming boxes to win2k from windows ME beacause winme really pissed me off. But anyway, win2k hasn't been any better. Ever game i play, it doesn't matter which one, old and new, i will get either a lock-up, a drop to windows, or a bsod (irql_not_less_or_equal). Ive switched out memory, scanned/defragged hard drive, and bought a new sblive (lol, my other one was bad anyway). Now, for win2k, ive installed via 4in1 4.29, sp1, all other windows updates, dx8, updated all drivers for all my cards, and still i get these problems. Now, other people have mentioned an AMD patch...but i doubt that will fix this...will it???? Oh, real quick, here are my specs: Tbird 1.2 ghz. Asus A7v 133a 512 MB PC-133 Micron Ram Asus V7700 Geforce 2 GTS/PRO 64 meg DDR SBLive! Okay, now, i am starting to think it is a driver issue with my video card. For some reason i just cant find a stable driver. The detonator 3's (6.50) suck. I tried Asus' new beta 11.01's....they gave much problems. Ive tried the 7.52's....they didn't work. So, does anyone know how to help me here? What drivers to use? AMD patch? Any other patches? You think its hardware related? Thanks in advance guys....
