Well, i can see that most of you don't know what your talking about. The differences between fat32 and ntfs are quite extensive, but there is one definitive reason that stands out above all. First of all, the main differences are speed, but only when accessing certain files that are stored in a b-tree as opposed to the file chain. The second is security. We all know that NTFS is more secure, hands down. But, the final and most important reason is how your data is stored. Data is stored in what is called a cluster. Fat32 stores data in 32 bit clusters as opposed to NTFS's 16 bit. What this means is, if you have 18 bits worth of data to be stored, you have to use 2 separate clusters when using NTFS, because, the first cluster can only store 16 of the 18, which means that you are losing 14 bits worth of storage with the second one. Now, when you try to access that stored data, you now have to browse through 2 clusters instead of one....this will cause a slow down in performance. With Fat32, you can use your clusters and data allocation to your benefit. Now that you understand how data is stored, you tell me....which one do you think is better and faster?? Fat32 is a better file system for gamers and overall data storage. I hope this helps clear up some confusion. -HarU

Microsoft says that win2k will be shipped with 7.0a but it only has 7.0. There is a download for 7.0a on microsoft's site, but it says only for win9x platforms. Is there anyway win2k users will be able to upgrade to this??

Hey viper, i told you man....you gotta clean out that pesky registry. If you are still getting muffled colors than your card is still having conflicts with previous drivers. It happens man. Especially if you switch drivers and you aren't in safe mode. I had this problem too....then i learned the error of my ways. It's real simpl, if you got about an hour, you can pop your cd in, go to the win32.exe file in the i386 directory and run the program. Reinstall windows, it will clean the registry, then pick a "SAFE" version of the nvidia drivers....i recommend 3.78. After it is done installing, just recreate your shortcuts and icons and you are back to normal.

Okay, when you switched drivers, did you do it in safe mode?? If not, do this....boot up into safe made, unistall your video card. Boot back up into regular mode and it will detect it. Then install the 3.78 drivers from nvidia, or better yet, install the drivers from the cards manufacturer, not nvidia, which is the chips manufacturer. Then reboot and see what happens. If it doesn't work....Pop in your win2k cd and reinstall the OS. YOU WON'T LOSE ANYTHING....DON'T WORRY! Just reinstall onto the same partition. This is going to overwrite and recreate your registry. Your problem is that your registry is all fooked up. A reinstall will clean it. Then reinstall the 3.78 drivers. They are the only released ones...the others are betas. I had probs with them too. I hope this helps.

Hey Dude....that bios thing is your problem. What mobo do you have??? If it is an older one, than it can't see that 40 gig drive. When you try to force it, it's going to cause problems. Just a thought.

The best way to do a win2k install is to do it with only your vid card in. I have to do this at work all the time. If you do this, not only will it install fine, but you can spread out your irqs. Put sound in next, reboot, then put in network, reboot, then put in scsi, reboot. Then all of your irqs will be spaced out.

Well, i had that problem when i first got my sblive. There is a very simple fix. The audioHQ comes defaulted to having digital output on. You have to turn it off or you will always only get 2 speakers. Make sure that is off, then plug that card back in and try it. Hope this helps

Have you guys tried using the drivers that the card manufacturer uses???? I used the nvidia drivers for a long time on my geforce (3dprophet) and i had random lockups also....but, i went to Hercules' site and got there drivers....and so far, not a problem.

I finally found someone that has the same problem as me. I have a BP6 board with dual cele 400s and a Geforce ddr (3dprophet) and it is detected as a PCI card??????? Isn't that wacked out???? quake3 and soldier of fortune both detect it as a pci card. I have also noticed that my system is not as fast as others with the same system....for example...fps in quake 3. Does this agp problem have anything to do with this?? And, how can i fix it?? any help is much appreciated. thx.

Hey scuzy, unfortunately, the reason is because win2k has problems with hardware. It won't tell you that there are problems. Instead of telling you, it will randomly lock up. I have seen it many times, especially at work. The two things that have caused it the most are SCSI cards and video drivers. First of all, make sure you are using the 3.78 drivers. They are the most stable right now. Second, if you have a non scsi drive, try installing win2k on it and use it to see if it locks. If it doesn't, you know it is the scsi card. Next, if it is the scsi card, i recommend getting a differnt card. Make sure it is compatible first. The next thing you could do is use the Win2k WDM drivers for your sblive and see what happens....if it still occurs, try removing your card. Sound cards can definately do it. Also, check your irq settings and make sure they aren't all sharing...for instance, irq 9 or 10 (usually the most popular) Let me know if any of this works....I know it is a lot of work, but we will find the problem if you do it. I hope this helps.

I'm having random lockups running W2K Pro. I've got a Creative TNT2, SB Live, and an Intel Pro 100 as my major hardware running on an FIC SD-11 with an Athlon 700. I found that my vid card, sound card, network card and USB ports are all using IRQ 9 and Device Manager won't let me adjust the settings. Is this my problem and if so, does anyone have a fix for this??? Much Appreciated, HarU

I tried disabling the ACPI in the BIOS, but couldn't find the settings for it. I read that before in the Win2K resource kit and tried disabling it in Device Manager, but that option was also unavailable..

check your bios for an option that allows you to enable agp 2x support. I know of a few bios' that make you tell it what to look for. See if that helps. Make sure you search the whole bios. Hope this helps

Well, i have a geforce ddr and i had those drivers installed. To make a long story short: two nights in a row, up to wee hours in the morning, I was trying to revive my broken computer. I mean, the damn thing would act like it was booting up normal, then it would get to win2k loading screen and all the way to the end of loading, then my hard drive clicked and restarted. Ain't that some sh*t. Well, i had to use a 98 floppy disk and reinstall windows through a damn dos prompt because not even my cd-rom would boot the win2k cd. After a long arduous night last night, i ended up getting my machine up and running and using the 3.78 drivers now. *sigh* Just thought i would add some hardships to these stupid drivers.

Homer, I am with you man. I totally agree. My sound is screwing up bigtime also....q3a, unreal tournament, soldier of fortune, force commander....they are all going out off and on. It really blows. Just thought i would let you know that you are not alone.

Well, i know that this sucks for a Geforce DosFreak. Every other Geforce i have seen has gotten at least 60 fps....even when the CPU was the bottle neck. Something is wrong here with mine. I know i should get more than that..... I get like 105 in Quake 2 with all the stuff on high.. Does anyone else have any advice rather than computer bashing??? It would be much appreciated. Oh, i got the 5.13 drivers to install. I had to remove my card and reinstall it a different way, but i got the drivers installed. It is still described as a PCI card in Quake 3 though. It says that it is a Geforce 256/PCI when you go to options, system, video, then driver details. That is weird. Does anyone know how to fix this??? I am losing the AGP bus performance because of this weirdness. I am sure that would help the FPS. Thanks again.

Okay, well, i tested my fps in quake III under the 3.78 drivers. They sucked!!! I got like 40 fps in 1024x768 with everything on high. I then tried to install the 5.13 drivers, but when i tried to update the driver it said i already had a suitable driver. It wouldn't install! I don't know what the hell is up with these fps. Someone please tell me what is going on!!! thank you. Oh, and one other thing, it looks like my computer detects my vid card using the pci bus instead of the AGP!! How do i fix that??
