    NTFS vs. FAT32

NTFS: If you want to have a reliable and secure platform use NTFS. The reason is that NTFS allows for much higher security for both local and network resources. In NTFS you can set permissions for creating files in a folder, changing their contents, deleting them etc be it for someone who connects from a remote computer or even a person who sits down at that computer and logs in locally. Permissions can be set on both folders and individual files. Also NTFS supports software fault tolerance (software RAID implementation) where drives can be mirrored and turned into stripe sets so that if data on one disk is destroyed it will be recovered by the other disks. Volume sets are also possible in which the capacity of a partition can grow and shrink depending on the amount of data that is stored in it. Also, if you are doing any file transfer or similar and there is a power failure or other event that would normally corrupt data then under NTFS this would not affect the data as a log is kept for every transaction and is only flagged as successfull when completed. FAT32: NTFS does not really contain any security other than for shared folders. There is also no software fault tolerance. Fat32 is best used if you have a dual boot system and you would like to be able to access data on the Win2k partition from Win98 as Win98 is not able to read NTFS. I would also recommend using Fat32 if you are installing games on that partition as I have come accross a few that simply do not like NTFS, how or why they do not work has baffled me, I simply do not know. The only wau to set read and write permission in Fat32 is by using a folder and setting either read or write access to that folder with a password and create a share. This way anyone accessing it remotely will require the password however anyone sitting down in front of the computer can simply view all data on Fat32. Since you have plenty of capacity I would recommend making both a Fat32 and an NTFS partition. If you are dual booting then don't forget to store any information relevant to both OS's on fat32 otherwise Win98 will not be able to read it and you will have to boot back into Win2k. I hope this has helped somewhat.

    MX300 in W2K: Which drivers?

I just wanted to say that I have the MX300 and chose to just leave the drivers which were installed with build 2195 alone, so far the sound is great. I cannot verify whether A3D is working as I have not honestly checked. I will however say that I would recommend against installing any NT4 or Win98 reference drivers because they are not for Win2k (duh). I don't want to annoy anyone by saying this but a little patience is necessary. You will simply have to wait until the Win2k drivers are ready if you want them to work on Win2k, you can't expect drivers for a different OS to work, even if it is similar. I mean, look at all the squabble over trying to get the Liveware 3 drivers to work for the SBLive. I have 3 computers, 2 of them with an SBLive and 1 with the MX300 and so far Win2K installs on them all however I have not cried or complained about any Win98 or NT4 drivers not working as they obviously do not and the ones installed by the OS originally are fine until official drivers are released. As far as waiting for drivers from Diamond is concerned I gave up on that a long time ago and have been very content with using Aureals reference drivers. So, please just be patient and wait until Win2K is "officially" released and the drivers for the hardware is too. I expect that everything will be solved in due and correct time. Have a nice day everyone.

BP6 HPT366 Errors in Win2k under Event Viewer

I have the latest BIOS and the latest drivers for the HPT366 controller. Bios version 1.21 and driver version 1.22. I was using them prior to your last post Seldzar. Also, the drive is fine under Win98SE and NT4. There are no such errors reported under NT4. The reason why I asked whether it is possible to use the NT4 drivers is that maybe they work under Win2k and maybe the Win2k drivers are buggy. I don't know, just trying out options. I didn't want to just install the NT4 drivers in case they totally screwed everything up and left me with an inaccesible boot driver for Win2k. Anyway, thanks for the effort Seldzar. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

    BP6 + Win2k +SMP + Quake3 + TNT/GeForce - Anyone have this c

I have build 2195 an am running Abit BP6, dual 500's @ 563, a CL GeForce but an Mx300, not an SBLive. Win2K installed drivers for my MX300 so I didn't touch that area. I simply downloaded and installed the NVidia 3.65 drivers and I can run Quake 3 fast and fine with sound. I heard that there are all sorts of problems running the SBLive with Liveware 3.0 and SMP so you might want to try running without sound or whatever is installed by the OS as default without using Liveware and see what happens. Hope this helps.

    Install Win98SE w/ Win2000 already installed

First of all I would like to tell you to back up all your important data just in case something goes wrong. Also, I am basing this on my experience with NT4, I haven't actually tried this out with Win2k although it should work the same. I am assuming you have the Bootable CD version of Win2k build 2195. You can simply install Win98 SE as normal from the CD. This will overwrite the boot sector therefore when you boot up again you will go straight into Win98. To fix this just enable boot from CD in your BIOS and place the Win2K cd in your drive. Then the Win2K installation will start and after a while you will get to a screen that asks you if you want to install Win2K or repair an exhisting installation. Choose to repair and then enable the option that checks/repairs the bootfiles or bootsector, I don't know exactly what it is called as I have not tried this on Win2K. If you feel a bit daring then give this a go, it should then enable a choice of booting to either Win98 SE or Win2k when you re-boot again. Good Luck...

    GeForce Drivers !!

Just follow this link: http://home.istar.ca/%7Egiq_tam/win2k-geforce-365.zip and you should be downloading version 3.65 of Nvidia's NT4 reference drivers which when I installed under Win2K worked fine and allowed me to play Quake 3. Good Luck
  8. I have an Abit BP6 motherboard and am using an IBM ATA66 27GB hard drive on the HPT366 controller. I recently downloaded the Win2k drivers for the HPT366 controller and used them to install Win2k. I am also using the latest PW Bios for the BP6 and version 1.21 of the hpt366 Bios. Everything seems to run fine except that the event viewer is full of the following "warnings". 1. Source: "HTP3661" Description: The driver has detected that device \Device\Scsi\hpt366 has old or out of date firmware. Reduced performance may result. 2. Source: "Disk" Description: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation. Is it safe to use the NT4 HPT366 drivers under Win2K? Win2K is build 2195. Can anyone help me out with this problem? Thanx in advance.
