Begin Anti-Piracy debate now please e-mail it to carpetmuncher@telebot.com Thanks.

I have a job, good money too. But this is a Microsoft product. You don't actually expect me to pay for it do you? Dip****.
-
I personally have no problem with piracy. I'll admit I am a software pirate. But you know what? I don't care what you think. I may pirate software, but I also buy over 95% of it. One thing I will not do is pay for Microsoft's overpriced products. Advanced server may not be overpriced, considering it's use, but Office and Win98 are. I'll take from Microsoft whatever I please to make up for their poor business practice which hurts EVERYONE else in the field. Sure, I'm dual booting Win98 and Advanced Server, but I don't come here looking for tech support. I don't even call Microsoft for my REGISTERED version of Win98. Phone tech support only has answers for idiots who don't have a clue how to use their computers. So EAT ME.

I have the same problem. My USB controller seems to work fine though. Go F*CKING figure.
-
Are there any major differences between Windows 2000 Pro and Advanced Server if my primary use is gaming and general Windows usage?
-
Well, since it's so easy to botch a Win2K install I'm sure I'll be beta testing Pro no matter what soon anyways I just wonder if it's worth it. Now that I finally got the Live! working I don't want to touch anything.
-
I guess what I meant to ask is if one is going to run any faster than the other? For example, am I going to get 20 fps more in Quake 3 in Professional than Advanced? Right now I have Advanced, and it seems great, but soon I'll have Pro too. Naturally I haven't paid for either, but that's ok since it's a Microsoft product.

I just can't see how all of you have so much trouble installing video card drivers in Windows 2000. I've done it OVER AND OVER without doing an uninstall on my Viper V770 TNT 2 Ultra. Learn how to use a computer.

You people just don't know how to use Norton. It's a great program IF you do a custom install, leaving all the crap out, and using what is actually useful. I swear by Norton Utilities and have fixed countless computer problems at work. Windoctor is the best cure for Illegal Operations short of reformatting.

I won't miss it. The only thing cool about is is bookmarking in the registry. What pisses me off the most is the refresh rate control. In Win 98 I can set it how I want it, and it stays that way. Win2K assumes that I must be too stupid to handle my refresh rate myself, so it likes to revert back to 60 for OpenGL or Direct 3D. That's just ****ing gay.
-
Perhaps you are not all idiots. I just find it unbelievable how everyone seems to have a different problem when installing drivers. I have come to the conclusion that Win2K sucks major ass and I am now running 98 again.

I spent about 6 F**KING hours last night trying to get the SB Live to work in Windows 2000. What a joke. I had it down perfectly. All the controls worked. But of course no god damn sound. I noticed the device still said 'do not map to this device' so I unchecked that. Back to square one with no sound, and controls don't work. Theoretically it should have worked. All the conditions were perfect. I'd be willing to bet Anthony Toste never got sound from it. I don't think he remembered to uncheck 'do not map to this device'. Hey Anthony, what OTHER sound card are you running? Obviously you're getting sound from somewhere.
-
Well, it didn't work. I installed the Liveware software without installing the sound card drivers and now I get a bsod every time I boot. Even in safe mode It's ok though. I've already reloaded 2000 about 25 times since I got it.

Ok. I reinstalled Windows 2000. Before installing I renamed the wdma10k1.in_ file to wdma10k1.fuk. I also removed my Awe 64 (yes, I intentionally DIDN'T tell you guys it was in there). Do you think it's safe to try and install the Liveware package WITHOUT the WDM Basic drivers previously installed? hehe Awe 64 hehe

This is supposed to make your hard disk access faster. It works very well for me on both my 7200 Ultra ATA 66 drive at home and my sh!tty 5400 Ultra Crapper at work. Configure the Contiguous File Allocation Size (Windows 9x and NT) This setting optimizes the contiguous file allocation size for the file system. This is especially useful for disk intensive applications. Open your registry and find the key below. Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem] Value Name: ContigFileAllocSize Data Type: REG_DWORD Data: 200 (hex) or 512 (decimal) Create a new DWORD value named 'ContigFileAllocSize', set the value to equal '200' (in hex). Close the registry and restart the computer for the change to take affect. Ripped from www.regedit.com

I have a standard modem. External 56K Faxmodem. I've even installed 2000 without it so that's not the problem. I have a single processor (P2-450).

LOL oh god I just **** myself
-
Do you have it plugged in [properly]? Also note that the digital board doesn't work...at least as far as I know. You have to use the analog out on the main board.
-
When you install new drivers, do you perform an uninstall on the old ones? If so, try just installing drivers over the existing ones. I haven't used that uninstall button one which may be why I haven't had any problems like yours yet.

Ekstreme, Contact me via ICQ at 14251966 I'll try to help a bit.

Try running the IBM Drive off of your Ultra 66 controller (I'm assuming it has 2 connectors). Any CD-Rom's, Zips, etc run off of your on board IDE. This is the best way to do it anyway. I'm not sure if it will work but it's worth a shot. I have almost the exact same configuration except my ATA/66 drive is a WD. Works great 4 me. gl
-
Ekstreme, Why do you have to reformat everytime you update your drivers? What build of Win2K are you using? I'm using 2195 final advanced server and I don't ever have any problems. I can switch back and forth as much as I want without any problems.

I was playing around with my services (turning off various ones I don't need) and I got to a point where after rebooting I couldn't open my services properties anymore. I was keeping a log of which ones I disabled in order, but the thing is, now I can't get back in to turn 'em back on. Windows 2000 loads just fine, but I can do almost nothing. It says a service failed to load. I can't even use the event viewer to see which f'ed up. I think it was the RPC call one but I'm not sure. Sorry this isn't very exact...I'm at work and don't have my log file with me right now to tell you which one it was.

Thanks much man. I ended up just letting it reinstall while I was gone tonight and everything's back to normal. But your info will help much because I'm ignorant and am still mucking around with my services (can't wait to see what happens when I reboot .
