I´m currently looking for a way to slim down Windows XP Professional to as little as possible. All that it needs to do is playing DVD titles via WinDVD and running the graphics + sound. I don´t need no fancy background pictures nor desktop themes, no internet connection, no nothing except the above mentioned DVD playback. Any suggestions?

Thx for the hint. Cursor problem is now gone but unfortunately, after a few minutes of playing the game, everything becomes black. The menus, the star map, ... My screen however is still active.

Logging onto the Win2k Server locally shows applications running (like Norton AV) in the taskbar. Back to my workstation, I try to log onto the server again using the terminal client. Althou I´ve used the same name ans pass as locally, I am not able to see these given applications running. I´m trying to solve this for almost a week now, without success. Please help me out.

Win2k 2000 Server; trouble with access by Terminal Client

Uh, sorry if that sounds weird, but where does one find this "SMS"? Using Google to find it doesn´t yield useful results... -
Win2k 2000 Server; trouble with access by Terminal Client

Thanks to you two. I´ll check out those programs. -
This problem gets worse the higher the DirectX version you have installed. Moo2 plays fine with Win2k´s built in DX7, freezes the mouse once in a while with DX8.1 and is completely unplayable with DX9 due to a non moving pointer. Unfortunately I don´t have a solution for this annoying "thing" (don´t know if it´s actually a bug). One thing is for sure: Microsoft screw up again

I´m currently working on a bootable recovery CD and have run across a few things I just can´t seem to figure out. The first OS on that CD is going to be DOS with the DOS part of Partition Magic 8.0. This alone is no problem at all. The second OS is the one the rescue disks of Acronis TrueImage come with. I need this in case of systemwide Windows partitions failures, so I can just write back a previously saved image. My problem is how to get both OSes and a boot manager onto one CD-ROM. If you have any tips, hints or advices, please post here.

Althou the latest patch does support TCP/IP UDP protocol, not being able to run the game using IPX/SPX can be a real pain in the ass. I had exactly the same problem. All the support from the Blizzard FAQ didn´t work for me. I finally managed to fix the problem by disabling certain services of Win2k or setting them to "manual". If my memory serves me right, I postet the solution into this forum. It might still be there; try using the search function.

Just wanted to play this classic again but noticed it won´t even start. Installed perfectly by running Setup with the added "-lgntforce" parameter. Applying the patch was successful, too. But as soon as I try to run the game, even by using this "-lgntforce" parameter it just returns to the desktop. Any clues? I´m using Win2k SP3. For hardware used, look at my sig.

Tried with Application Compatibility Toolkit. Didn´t work. Perhaps a Win2k SP3 specific problem; will check with Win2k SP2 asap. In the meantime, could one of you please check with WinXP / XP SP1?

GLQuake is from the day before yesterday. Instead, give Tenebrae a shot: http://users.pandora.be/hollemeersch/blackrose/tenebrae/ If your machine has enough power, that is

Quote: I think I would just buy a DVD player. I´ve been looking for those but the combo of functions I require are not available in any product the market has to offer. So I have to build my own... What I need most is uninterrupted layer change. This alone sorts out 95% of the available stand alone players. The remaining 5% have to be codefree, disabled macrovision, disabled user prohibitions plus being able to switch off even forced subtitles. Well, unfortunately we´re now at 0% of the available stand alone players.

There´s no way to play Privateer using anything different than plain old DOS. This was discussed alot here, so if you want details on that please use the search function.

M4Carbine, you found a working slowdown util? Where´d you get it?

So this means that the new AppCompat will finally run? Impressive...

Well, if you plan to upgrade every three years or so the go ahead, overclock. But if you want your system to work as long as possible, then don´t overclock. It´s that simple. I too have a Celeron 300A running at 450 MHZ. I bought it as soon as those Celerons were available (late ´98 I guess). It´s still working like a charm, but I expect it to malfunction any day now. Besides, the limited overclockability of todays components (CPUs, graphics processors) isn´t worth the trouble IMHO. For descent overclocking you´d need a P4 2,4GHZ, a Peltier and a good water cooling system. Well, if you can afford all of this and got the time to implement it, then you really can upgrade every year as well without going through the hassle of overclocking if you always want to be up to date. If you don´t want to use water cooling and have to use air coolers then don´t overclock. The speed increase is only noticed in synthetic benchmarks like Mad Onion´s and stuff like that where you can read numbers, but not in real gaming.

Well, as of yet the only company being able to push new technology by a good amount is nVidia. ATI's truform is supported almost nowhere. Serious Sam 1 (by patch) & 2 were one of the few titles. However, I won´t buy the coming generation of videocards, I´ll rather wait for their optimized versions. Like the GeForce 2 Ti was the optimized version of the original GeForce and the GeForce Ti 4600 too is only the optimised version of the GeForce 3. So, in fact we´re not really seeing GeForce 4th generation now, but rather 2nd generation.

Increasing the refresh rate from 85hz to 90hz really isn´t noticable, but going from 85hz to 100hz or beyond surely is! Quote: It's not like overclocking your processor, where you can make things run faster by taking them out of spec. Overclocking a CPU makes it run faster, but also reduces its lifetime.

I´ll give XP a definate try once the first service pack is out and my firewall system is up and running. Is a PII 450 on an Asus P2B-S with 256MB RAM going to be enough to run Conectiva Linux?

Hardware might be the best/fastest/whatever to buy, but what´s it worth with crappy drivers?

Quote: Really good read on this board... from what it sounds like on paper, ATI is ready to release what finally looks like a GeForce 4 Ti4600 "killer", bigtime! Yeah, as if comparing next gen with current gen hardware would make any sense. We´ll see how the next gen cards will perform against each other once every manufacturer has one out.

Low transfer speeds in LAN connection between 2 XP systems
Preacher replied to p00pie's topic in Networking
I keep having this issue, too. Usually, disabling and enabling the network connection on the server fixes that problem for the current session. Sometimes, I´ve got to do this with the client, too. -
I too have a 4600, but that´s only because I had the cash at hand I think you´d be better of with the 128MB GF4Ti4200. Get some decent cooling for that card and overclock it as high as possible. You might reach the performance of a 4600 that way.
