Best way to install a new harddrive without losing info.
Andersony replied to rbarbier's topic in Hardware
I think I tried the xcopy routine when I upgraded my drive.... it's posted in here somewhere (I asked the same question, but didn't get many responses). Of course the 98 crap will copy over and work just fine, I use this method almost daily (xcopy /h /e /r /c /k /y), and it works flawlessly. The bummer is the Win2k (or NT) stuff. When I tried to up my Win2k (NTFS5) drive to a larger one, I tried the following: I installed the new drive as master in place of my CD on the 2nd channel. I booted to 2k, partitioned and formatted the drive, and copied everthing over with the switches (at least the ones 2k will accept). Shut down, put the new drive in as Master on Channel 1 and booted. I found that it didn't have some of the system files needed to boot up. Soooo, I tried to reinstall (upgrade), hopeing it would repair what was missing. Setup couldn't find an exsisting version on my new drive. So, I tried the whole thing all over again in 2k Safe mode, thinking they were active and just wouldn't copy. SAME RESULT only a little better. I also tried using the Recovery disk when it couldn't find my exsisting version on the new drive, helped but still no joy ! Copying them from a 98 host computer was not an option for me, since my original drive was NTFS5. So I got inventive and tried upgrading the disks to dynamic, mirroring them, and then rebooting and breaking the mirror. Which worked just fine, except, I found out that 2k won't allow you to resize the primary partition. So, I had accomplished my task of making an exact copy to the new drive, but couldn't use the new space under the same partition !!! What I finally did was install a fresh copy of 2k onto a 5GB partition (drive c and copied all my programs and data to a second partition (drive d: 35GB). I then reinstalled (upgraded) all the programs so that they new they were now on d: and had reg. entries and system files in the new 2k directory. After that, I made both partitions dynamic. So that, now if I upgrade my drive again, I can just mirror both partions to the new drive, boot to the new drive, break the mirror and adjust the second drive's size dynamically to use up the new space (Remember: it won't allow you to change the primary dynamic partitions size - thats why I used 5GB, big enough for the future, plus I had a spare 5GB that I use as a mirror for the boot partition as fault tolerence). I hope someone has different resultzzz for ya, but thats the agony I went threw .. I actually I kinda like my new setup. -
Same prob here ..... however, I can get sound through the port on the back of the dxr3 card itself. I can also play PowerDVD just fine with sound. Only catch with my setup is that my speakers are USB, so I wasn't expecting much with the decoder card for sound.

Question about Paging file!?

I was about to tell you that you were HIGH or something, cuz I had the same modem and had to put it aside under RC2, until I got Retail... But, I just checked and it appears that it has dissapeard from my Retail version - and trust me it was there! The only thing I can think of was the critical update from MS must had derezed it ? Have you applied it? The same driver works for CNet USB modem. I'll see if I can extract what I have for ya...

Since you were networking fine when both machines were 98, the problem is local to your w2k machine ... no need to worry about cable. No, It doesn't matter if its server or Professional. If removing NetBeui doesn't solve it (prob. wont). I checked the stock drivers in 2k and this board and don't find wether your NIC is compatible with 2k... R U sure it is? If it is... Check to see that the NIC is enabled (Local Area Connection -> Properties -> Hit the configure button). Also, make sure that an IRQ shows up in the resource tab (9x was famous for detecting a few cards and showing no signs of problems and still not working. If you looked under the resources and entered the missing value for the IRQ, you were up and running - Although I haven't seen 2k do this YET). I haven't had any problems with AutoNeg. on the Connection Type (Advanced Tab) under 2k, but Jabba may have a point - I've seen this cause headaches in 9x. Check for new drivers for Win2k for that NIC? Verify your settings (ip, subnet, etc...)

Good question... What r u using to test your bandwidth? I've been using a little utility called NetCps, but I don't know if it is reliable or not. It reports 65Mb xfers for me between a Win2k and 98se machine with Dlink Nics and a Netgear FE104 (4pt version of yours). I have found various things to affect transfer rate... CAT5 running by Flourescent lighting, etc.

A 2k Pro computer I'm working on boots normally to the point of loading all the sys tray crap, then usually before it gets to the last item or 2nd to last it quites responding for about 5 minutes, then works flawlessly after that... After its time out period it generates the following errors in the Event Viewer: perfctrs Unable to read IO control information from NBT device. Winmgmt WMI ADAP was unable to load the winspool.drv performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0 -- Now ... just whaaaaaaaaat the faaaaaalk are WMI ADAP's, NBT's and Perctrs ... and why are they hastling me ??? heh .. help! I know the timouts usually mean hardware and driver problems (NT4 days)...

Thanks... I returned to the Knowledge Base and still got no hits on those key words, but since you did I, I opened the search to all products (instead of just Win2k) and WHAT DO YA KNOW - I got 2 hits under ADAP, which solved the problem just like ya said. For anyone else: It's a known problem that sometimes happens from upgrading RC2 to Retail (with a fix - in the KB).

If you have a reason for using NetBeui great, if not uninstall it... Using TCP/IP ... 1st - Can you ping each computer? 2nd - If you search for their NetBios names (Right Click on Network Neighborhood (9x)/My Network Places (2k)) do they find each other?
-
I got a reply from one of the MS newsgroups saying that it was a known bug - and that its looking for the "Task Schedule Share". To be fixed in SP1 ? So, I've been living with the problem. I've since just mapped drives to other computer in the network.

Thanks Exorsist... I had all but the NT4 driver part done .. and hence, had crappy choppy sound. I think I even saw a post that said to install the NT4 drivers, I just looked at the post as 'what a dumb ass' tells me to install Hollywood drivers, then NT4 drivers. Hey, I don't mind being a dumb ass in this case as long as I have good sound ! Thanks for the explanation on that last part or I never would have done it.

Need a little more info ... What protocol are you using (TCP/IP), what settings do you have (ip address, subnet mask, etc)...
-
Couple of things to check... If you right click on my network places, choose search for computers, and type the name of the other computer does it find it? If so, you have a configuration or a master browser problem (and I don't mean IE). Check Microsoft's KB. Assuming you have the ness. components installed (Client for MS, F&P sharing (with something shared!!) and TCP/IP installed) then check the properties for TCP/IP, verify that in the Advanced section, in the WINS tab, you have NetBios over TCP/IP enabled. If all else fails u can always add each others address to an LMHOSTS file. And I agree ... NetBeui is Junk. [This message has been edited by Andersony (edited 18 March 2000).]

Ok guys I need some help, I cant figure this out for nothing
Andersony replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
I had a Zoom 56k external that did the same thing.... I'm trying to remember how I fixed it. The way I remember it was: when the modem became unavailble, I deleted it and had the system search for a new modem... to which it always found it again and I was off and running. The Fix: I think I went into safe mode and found another copy of the modem in device manager when I told it to show hidden devices. I know my problem wasn't a resource conflict, and I'm assuming yours isn't also? -
In Win9x if I wanted to quickly move to a larger hardisk: I could just boot under the old drive to Win 9x. Open an MS DOS prompt and xcopy x:\*.* z: /h /e /r /c /k /y. Unhook the old drive, boot to a floppy, set the new drive as Active. And booooom ! I'm off and running with a larger drive. NT4 pissed me off with its 4GB limit ... so I hardly messed with it. 2000 is awesome, but I'm having trouble moving all my Win2k info to a larger drive. I've messed with the dynamic partitions, thinking that I could mirror it, break the mirror and then resize the dynamic boot partition to take up the rest of the space of the new drive ... but it wont allow the primary "dynamic" partition to be resized. What R U doing? -Brett

A computer I'm working on reports the following in the Event Logs: wmi The description for Event ID ( 54 ) in Source ( WMI ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The following information is part of the event: \Device\WMIServiceDevice. --- (I get 2 of these in a row) perfctrs Unable to read IO control information from NBT device. Winmgmt WMI ADAP was unable to load the winspool.drv performance library due to an unknown problem within the library: 0x0 ---- Don't have the slightest clue as to what a WMI is ... so I don't even know where to start. I've about driven myself nuts trying to figure it out (W - Windows, M - ??, I - Interface ???) --- is it sooooo necessary for them to abbreviate everything. Krimuny! Tried searching the Microsoft Knowledge Base and here - no hits... Help... Win2k Pro Final Abit BX6-2 P3 450 -Brett

Thanks Skywise... That did the trick, but I'm with you, I'm waiting for the release of Creative drivers and sticking with ACPI for now. I tried your suggestion on a test system (nice to have when you not sure if its just your machine) and it cured the problem.

I installed the Hollywood drivers and then installed the dvdr3wup (Oct 99') from the creative site, making sure to just install the PC DVD Player. With this combo I can play files if I copy them to my hardisk, however if I attempt to play them from the 5x the sound gets f'd. Same Problem? I am assuming that its the driver for the 5x drive that is messing it up, cuz most everyone else with a different drive and the dxr3 seem to be watching movies alright. Guess I'll just wait a couple of more weeks...

I assume, since your asking this question, you haven't checked the hardware compatability list from this site? It has great instructions on how to make this work. Just look under 'E' for Encore.

Saw that this modem finally works under RC3. Only thing is, I have RC2 and really want to get this modem working. Checked Diamond and Compaq, neither drivers there work. Is it possible to rip just the modem.inf from RC3 for use on RC2 ... Or do I have to wait for my RC3, which I don't think is going to make it to me by March (release ... ?)
