Taking k6-2 cap of processor, help warmth problem?

I wasn't into K6-2 line since my upgrade to celeron, but I cannot remember my K6 was that HOT?? I suggest you get a good heatsink. I mean realy good Aluminium heatsink, not those that you get from those cheap stores. I am using Globalwin on my Celeron and according to my motherboard reading, it says my CPU is about 37 degree celcius. If you can't get the temperature down, perhaps, you might want to consider active cooling? Get a peltier cooler? They might be expensive but remember you can still use it when you upgrade your processor.

Lw3 for win2k any idea when??

Yes I agree, when I play my Audio CD, it seems to skip quite a few sector of the song from time to time. Screw up when listening to too many MIDI files. the sound in the background doesn't fade off until I need to stop the player and run it again. So far, games experience.... I wasn't too much into games, but so far, no problem with games yet.

    256 MB - BSOD ??

Can you try to skip a DIMM slot instead of placing them both together? And also, try to exchange the position of the SDRAM. It solve my problem on several of occasion. If problem persist, go to CMOS setting, enable Auto Spread spectrum and also set the memory timing to CAS 3 instead of CAS 2. And set the memory as 10 ns instead of BY SPD or 7 ns. When you get your system running stabily, you can enable back those features. Set it back to 7 ns, CAS 2, Auto spread spectrum leave it on. I don't know why, i just can't explain it. Maybe your system need some times to get used to the new environment

300MHz Min for software DVD is bull****

I have abandon Socket 7 platform long ago, and haven't been following up with its development since the new development of SS7. But I have tried DVD on Celeron 366 and they work perfectly well. Not anything like 100% CPU utilization. Well, maybe the Geforce GPU doing the job (Motion compensation)???

Dual Booting Windows 2000 from two drives

okay, this is what I do. I backup the whole Windows 2000 using Winace into a single ZIP file which include every files (exclude swap file) in the root directory, WINNT directory, Document and Settings, and Program Files. Then next, I unzip it to my other drive (say D: Drive) in its root directory. Next I need a Windows 98 boot disk with fdisk.exe program in it. Go into the BIOS, disable the drive C:. And also set it as boot from Floppy drive. Use the Boot disk, run fdisk and set the status as Active. Next use the original Windows 2000 CD. Boot from Windows 2000 CD, then choose to repair Windows 2000 installation, uncheck everything expect Inspect Boot sector. After that, you should be able to boot from your new drive. Maybe a few tweak around with the boot.ini file in the root directory is necessary. So now you have two copy of running Windows 2000, one in C drive and the other in D drive. Now enable your Drive C from BIOS again. You can multiboot from C drive from BIOS boot sequence as C, CDROM, Floppy, etc, etc.. When you want to boot from Windows 2000 in D Drive, then go to BIOS, set it as D, CDROM, floppy etc, etc. Another way to do it is to edit your C:\boot.ini file to include your D Drive Windows into the OS Menu. Be sure to backup your existing boot.ini incase you screw up. Then in future, you boot from your C drive, with the option of choosing to boot from C drive or D drive in the OS menu. I know I haven't explain it in detail enough. But if you have question, do feel free to ask. Oh one more thing, I would advise to work on FAT32 partition instead of NTFS partition because if anything screw up, you won't be able to access your NTFS partition from bootdisk. Although what I have mentioned should not need you to boot into your drive using a bootdisk, but this is just a safety precaution. The likely possible of the need to boot into your drive using floppy is when you edit the boot.ini file wrongly.

    quake3 and smp

Same thing here. But does not lock up after 3 sec, but rather randomly, sometimes allow me to be in for more than a minute, sometimes hang even before I see my menu. Do you run RC5 Client? Shut it down, it might help sometimes.

Whats the big fuss on prossessor speed

JMD, I don't remember any 3D studio MAX for students, but perhaps you can find some of the stores offering 10% discount for students?? How hard is AutoCAD for you? I will says 3D Studio MAX is twice as hard as that. Learning curve? Hmm.. need lots of practice. Even until now, I still admit that I am not efficient enough on it.

Whats the big fuss on prossessor speed

Err. I don't think you can change the multiplier of Celerons processors. One more thing about overclocking, well, a lot of people says overclocking is unhealthy for your processor. Well, only the chipmakers says so. What would I say is that, chipmakers are the REAL overclockers who has control over the multipliers and voltage (bus speed if you want to include as well). With 1 Ghz, they ramp up the voltage but they say they ramp it up to increase the yield. A user to ramp up their voltage? To overclock What is the difference here between to increase the yield and to overclock here? What difference between a 1 Ghz chips and a 800 Mhz chip? The marking is different, the multiplier is different (Maybe.. 800Mhz/133 then mutliplier the same). Thats all?? The heatsink that bundle with it is different. The busspeed is different (If 800/133 then same bus speed). Thats all? Err... The SL code is different, the core is the same. In this case, why not we up the voltage a little bit, increase the bus speed, and couple it with a better heatsink and you get 1 Ghz? My remarked P100 (Actually P75) is still alive until today, so they shouldn't have shorten the life of the chips.

fdisk /mbr then sys c: from your bootdisk will get rid of those OS Selections stuff.

Whats the big fuss on prossessor speed

Well, it really depends on the users. Some of them, if you throw them a P233 MMX, they are satisfied with it. They can do all their emailing and Word processing. While for some others (like me ), I don't think dual 1 Ghz processors will satisfied my thirst. For the kind of work that I work on (Autocad + 3D Studio MAX), Video encoding, etc, etc, I generally have to leave my computer on for ~10 hours to get what I want. With dual 1 Ghz, 5 hours?? Still quite long isnt it?

Dual 850's - anyone running them?

I don't have a dual 850 combo, but I have a 512 Mhz combo, they are really great especially in RC5 and movies encoding. They are exactly twice as fast as single processor machine.

    new smp mobo?

Wow, this definitely sounds like a very hightech mainboard. Perhaps it will only appear in say 4 months time? Furthermore, SCSI onboard mainboard isn't cheap. I rather spend my money on mainboard without SCSI and use the extra money to buy myself a better CPU or memory or larger IDE hardisk. Well unless you are those sort of people who run 15 Quantum Atlas II 10K in RAID-0.

    SuperMicro Mobo Bios Updates available

I suppose Standby is just a new term in Win2000, whereas Suspend has been just having the similar meaning. I haven't been able to go Standby mode ever since I bought this mainboard. How did you get it to run? There wasn't this option for me at all. When I press my Power button (which suppose to go into standby mode), it says my CD Writer is preventing it from going into standby mode. Which I think is quite ridiculous. I am running ACPI kernel. How about you?

    SuperMicro Mobo Bios Updates available

HI, I just update mine to version 3.0 as well. Nothing newer except MPS run at Version 1.4 without problem. Same problem, no suspend mode. Slightly bootup faster than normal. (Maybe) I do not have any AGP related problem since my revision on September. I haven't actually try out Version 3.0 BIOS long enuff. Will keep you informed. Quite bad support from SuperMicro indeed. They don't keep people informed about what has been updated. What are the known issues, etc. I think my next mobo will be Abit or Asus.

    Detonator win2k 5.16!

Goa, You said you ran witthout problem on SMP machine. May I ask you did you actually enable the SMP features in Quake 3 Arena?

    Detonator win2k 5.16!

Most people wont have problem if they have uniprocessor machine.. I think Nvidia Driver just isn't synchronizing the data it receive from each CPU properly.

    SCSI or Fasttrak66

Seems like I am having a problem with Fasttrak66. I have an onboard SCSI and a Fasttrak66 IDERAID card. It does not have the Fasttrak66 BIOS bootup screen at all when I enable onboard SCSI. But the Fasttrak66 BIOS screen does appear if I disable SCSI onboard. How can I have both of them? Coz I don't want to sacrify either of them. Another problem is that, I don't seems to be able to install Fasttrak66 driver on Windows 2000. It detect as Ultra66, which it isn't. I try to point Windows 2000 to the driver which I got from promise website, but my Windows 2000 refuse to boot up now unless I pull the Fasttrak66 out of the slot. Uninstall the Fasttrak66 from Windows doesn't work for me.

    SCSI or Fasttrak66

EM, They are indeed a different drive with different capacity. I have ordered two more drive for the stripe raid, hopefully will arrive on Wednesday. Although the older one is about 1.8 Gb smaller than the new one that is coming in. If I am not mistaken Promise also said that the stripe capacity is the smallest drive x the number of hardrive you have.

    Intellimouse Explorer probs in games

Dear kasnitch, I am very surprise you said it works on your white mousepad as well. It didn't work on mine. How should I say it? It definitely works on white surface, but the pointer isn't listening to your movement. I conclude it as not working. You said you disagree with what I said, I am not sure if you disagree also with the mouse working on glass and mirror or not. It definitely does not work on mine. [in this case, it doesn't move at all!] Craps... better ask Microsoft not to display their mouse on top of mirror.

    SCSI or Fasttrak66

Thanks EM for your suggestion. Instead, I found something equalvalent in my BIOS. It allows me to change the sequence of my PCI slot (default: PCI slot 1 from the left, I can switch it to PCI slot 1 from the right). Seems like the Onboard SCSI is actually a PCI on the first PCI slot (virtual). The actual first PCI slot is considered as PCI Slot 2. I reverse all the sequence that's mean I put Onboard SCSI to the last. And it works. But came back with another problem I hook two of my drive to the Fasttrak. Formatted it, there was nothing wrong. But when installing Windows 2000, it just hang half way, then restart again, it says Unable to access boot device in the Blue Screen. I use scandisk to scan my drive, it can't even scan.. Stuck at 44%. I delete the partition and do fdisk, but when checking the integrity at 5%, it hang. I undo the stripe and seperate them up. My newer drive seems to be free from any problem. But my older drive (Seagate Medalist Pro 7200 rpm), seems to have Not ready error reading... very funny. I thought they are not floppy. I switch the IDE channel, but still the same.. Slightly scared, so I hook back to the onboard IDE, and reformat it, but it is totally okay. I wonder if there is anything to do with too many of drive controller? Or the drive is a bit old? One funny thing I found is that Fasttrak report it is running at U2. If I am not mistaken, my Seagate Medalist Pro don't have this function yet.. But cannot find anyplace to switch back to UDMA 33. Anything to do with this? Note: I need to know what is the cause of this problem because three of my Quantum Fireball LM is coming in on Wednesday. If it has to do with too many controller onboard, I would cancel the order while I still can. If it was the drive, then I can still keep the order.

    SCSI or Fasttrak66

    > Having both of them can be nearly > impossible. I have both SCSI and Fasttrak > and have found that the Fasttrak MUST be > loaded first in the bootup sequence. What I > mean is that the Fasttrak BIOS needs to > load before the SCSI BIOS. Since the > Fasttrak is seen as a SCSI device even > though it isn't, the BIOS of the computer > boots from whichever SCSI device it sees > first. Err.. How do you do that? I am still searching through the manual, haven't found any relevant page on it. > As to the Ultra66 drivers loaded: www.promise.com/techsupport/Notes/windows_2000_rc2_installation_FT66.htm Will try it when my new drive comes in. Thanks for your link
