Hosting web server on Windows 2000 Server

Now I have my web site configured on port 81, but I can't access it from outside the Linksys router. I have already set up forwarding in Linksys router for port 81 to the web server. If I use 80, everything works, but not on 81. The same applies to FTP if I use ports other than default 21. Is there something to do with the IIS Lockdown or URLScan tools? Thanks for your help.

    remote control - pcAnywhere

I've got a PC from home that I want to be able to control it from work. Basically I have HomeSeer installed and I'd like to control it from work from time to time. So far I have pcAnywhere installed on both PCs and I was able to get into the home PC from work no problem. Home PC is running @Home cable and it's connected to a Linksys 4-Port Router and DMZ is enabled on the PC. For pcAnywhere, I have set up a password so to open a session, a password is required. I also encrypted the data transmission using pcAnywhere default encryption method. Is there anything I can do to safe-guard the PC? Do I necessary to enable DMZ on the router? Can I just enable certain ports instead? The home PC is running Windows 2000, can I use IP filtering so it will only accept my PC from work? That seems to be the best route to go, don't you think? Sorry, I have too many questions to ask Thanks for your response. Simon

Force shut down in Windows 2000?

I was just wondering if there's a way to tell Windows 2000 to shut down all the programs even though they might not respond to the SHUT DOWN command? I have 2 programs that don't always close when I select SHUT DOWN from the START MENU. What I'll get is "Sysfader.exe is not responding", and I'll get a progress bar. Once I close it, it'll shut down the PC. Another program is the Motherboard Monitor for monitoring temperatures. Thanks Simon
  4. I just configured my PC as terminal server (kinda a test at this point) and it's connected to a Domain Controller running NT 4.0. I've configured the server to use IIS so I can login through IE 5.0. It's been working fine but the problem is even normal user can shut down the server. The shut down button is available in START menu. I've been checking but haven't found a place to prevent that. Thanks for your help.
  5. Hi, I'm planning on building a print server under Windows 2000 workstation and there'll be a total of 500 users connected to it. There won't be 500 concurrent connections but I'd imagine 100-150 at worst. What kind of a computer box would I need for handling a task like this? Would a P2-400MHz with 128MB RAM do it? Thanks for your input.

Hardware config for a print server serving 500 users

Clutch, Thanks for your reply. Hmm, I didn't think of the limited concurrent licenses with Professional. I might need to op for 2K server but I'm just trying to save money here (getting 2K professional is cheaper than 2K server). We already have a print server that is Unix based. However, setting up new printer for users is a pain. However, if I had a Windows based server, all they have to do is double-click on the printer they want to use, and Windows does the rest for the users. Thanks again
  7. I'd like to know if I it is possible to create an user account in W2K that only last for the time I specified? We sometimes have different people using the PC and we'd like to restrict the access so they can only access for so long. They all login using a generic account.

    Enable Offline Files in Win2K?

I accidentally disabled Offline files in Windows 2000 Pro and now I can't change it back? When I right-click on a shared folder (i.e. \\PC1\Shared), I no longer have the option to select "Make it available Offline". Is there any way to reset this? Thanks [This message has been edited by Simon Ngan (edited 15 January 2001).]

NT4.0 Domain Controller and Win 2000?

Hi everyone, Our company is running NT 4.0 as Domain Controller and I'm running Windows 2000 Pro on my desktop. If I let my PC to join the Domain, I can't control my PC (insufficient rights). However, I've added myself in the Administrators group in the Domain. If I log in locally to Win 2000, I can do whatever I want. What should I do to make it so that I can log in to the domain and yet have all the controls of my local Win 2000 PC. Thanks

Yes, it worked. I knew it would be something simple. Thanks a lot for your help.

    16-colors icons on 32bit desktop?

I'd like to know how to make an answer file and how to make a Windows 2000 SP1 CD? Do you mean get the SP1 burned on a CD or something? Thanks a lot

    MS Licensing

Our company is buying a lot of MS software through open licensing, and as you know, a license copy will only cover license with no CD. I sometimes get request from users about getting them a CD so they can use it when it's needed. If I get the CD from MS, it'll cost me around $20-$25, however, if I burn it on a CDR, it'll only cost me $1. But is it a legal thing to do? Thanks

    MS Licensing

Guys, very thoughtful answers. I think I should practice to say "NO" when people ask for CDs I'm just getting ready for my Windows 2K server, eventually I'll have all apps transferred on the 2K server.

    Terminal Server

Hi guys, I just converted my Windows 2000 Server to Terminal Server. However, I have already installed a lot of programs and I heard in order to use Terminal Services, I should enable Terminal Services right after the installation of Windows 2000. Is there an utility I can run so it'll adjust the registry for Terminal Services or I'll need to re-install Windows 2000 again? Thanks

Web folders in Windows 2000 Server

Hi, I was trying to access web folders from my Win2k server, but it keeps saying the link is invalid. The link was working before when I first installed Win2k. I'm not sure which program is causing it. Any help is much appreciated. I have Office 2000 with FrontPage 2000 installed and all patches for Windows 2000 and Office 2000. Thanks a lot

    ABIT BH6 & ACPI in Windows 2000

I just updated the BH6 BIOS to the latest version "SS", and it supposes to fix the ACPI issue with Windows 2000. However, after I applied the patch, Win2k didn't redetect my PC, I still get "Standard PC" instead of "ACPI Compliant PC" under Hardware Profile. Is there anything I need to remove in order for Win2k to redetect my PC? Thanks

    Hibernation problems with Abit BH6

If I already have Win2K installed and I'll update the BH6 BIOS to SS, would Win2K detect I have an ACPI compliant PC? Thanks

My Pictures Folder under My Documents

If I save a picture under My Pictures, I'll have a little thumbnail display for each file (similar to ACDSee Browser). However, if I create a sub directory under My Pictures, it won't work anymore. Is this a bug in Win2k? On the other hand, I have WinME Beta installed and it seems to work okay in WinME. Thanks for your response.

Windows ME, Tweak UI & Regclean

Sorry, I'm asking a question about Windows ME. I've installed a copy of Windows ME (final), but I'm not sure if I can install Tweak UI from Windows 98 as well as the Regclean? I'll need Tweak UI pretty bad as I have a separate drive for all my IE favorites. With TweakUI, I can use it and point to another directory for my favorites. Without it, I don't really know how to do it. If you have tried both Regclean and TweakUI with Win ME without any problems, please let me know.

Windows ME, Tweak UI & Regclean

Thanks for the reply. I got the TweakUI from the link you told me and I'm all happy. It seems though that TweakUI will expire some time in August because I was just curious and roll the clock ahead 2 months, it complains about the prelease TweakUI has expired and it won't let me use it.

    Direct CD?

Doh!!! I just installed Media Player 7.0 on my W2K machine and now no compatible CDRW drive. I guess I'll have to go back to Media Player 6.4.

Asus Live 4.0 Beta 4 not working

I've downloaded a copy of Live 4.0 Beta 4 (Asus 6600 Ultra Deluxe) and run it under Windows 2000 Advanced Server, but it didn't work. When I bring up Asus Live, the capture window kinda flash to the pink background for a second, then I get a gray background. I have the latest Beta 2000 Display Driver installed (I can't remember the exact version #). Anyone have a clue? P.S. The capture driver seems to be kinda buggy than the last beta release. When I was using it under Win98, quite a few times, I was only able to capture 1/4 of the screen for no reason. Also, the contrast level changes kinda automatically (I set to the same level, but all of a sudden in the middle of a capture, the picture gets a lot brighter). Thanks

    Regclean?

I've been using Regclean for a few months on Advanced Server 2195, no problems so far. In fact, I think it's doing a good job. First time I ran it, the size of the repair file was roughtly 30KB.

    Adaptec DirectCD 2.5/3.0?

Hi, Can anyone manage to get DirectCD 2.5/3.0 running on Win2K? I got the info. from Adaptec that DirectCD isn't compatible with Win2K, but I need to make copy of some files through CDRW and DirectCD is the only way to copy stuff (for me anyway). Thanks Simon
