While trying to install Windows XP Pro 2600 on pimpin_228's computer we encountered problems installing. First I started by booting off the XP cd to start setup, it would load a few files and then it would get the the part where is says "Starting Windows.." and it would just hang, i tried running setup two other different ways but had no luck with any of them. Windows 2000 installs fine and does not hang like Xp does. I have done the following to attempt to fix the hanging problem: Switched Video cards from AGP GF2MX to PCI GF2MX Tried 3 different sticks of RAM ranging from 512, 256, to 64. Disconnected any extra hardware (i.e. CDRW, NIC, FANS.) Made sure the CPU was not overclocked. Changed CAS latency from 2 to 3. Tried different CD/DVDROMS. Changed cpu's from Duron 850 to Athlon 700 (Socket A) Changed IDE ribbon cables Reset the BIOS to factory defaults. Made sure blue ends of 80pin ribbons were on the mobo. If i am missing anything please tell me. Also, here are the specs of the machine at hand: DFI AK-74 EC mobo AMD Duron 850 GF2MX AGP 512MB SDRAM WD 40gb 5400rpm ATA100 EIDE (primary master)(80pin cable) DVS DVDROM 5x EIDE (secondary master)(80pin cable) 300w ATX PSU

dunno, sometimes you can open the .dl_ or .ex_ files with something like WinRAR and extract the actual archived file, other than that i'd have to say try pasting it in place of the old one and trying an install.

Forcing XP to fill RAM before using Swap File?
EddiE314 replied to isochar's topic in Customization & Tweaking
open Photoshop, go to Edit, Preferences, Memory and Image Cache.(its set by default to using 50% of physical memory. you can also try under Scratch Disks. -
here's what i think happens (at least with the old Beta3), you install StylesXP, it modifies uxtheme.dll which enables you to use unsigned skins, when you uninstall StyleXP its supposed to replace the modified dll with the original. Thats supposed to be what happens, weather or not it does, i don't know.

you can attempt to fix the master Boot Record by using FDISK like this: X:\> fdisk /mbr <EDIT>Sorry, didn't totally read your first post.</EDIT>

you need either a "hacked" UxTheme.dll file or you need to install StyleXP to do so for you. StyleXP is available at http://www.tgtsoft.com

might be your video card, the Voodoo drivers for WindowsXP are "OK". they work most of the time, however, i have had the occasional Lock-Up, BSOD, or System Reboot, using any and all XP Voodoo drivers.

Looks like Netscape sued Microsoft on Tuesday, when is Netscape gonna realize that its not going to win, not with the browser wars and not with the lawsuit. Why would anyone in their right mind use Netscape when much bettewr browsers such as Opera, Mozilla, and IE exist? I used to use Netscape before it became "bloatware" and if i get the urge to use it now i just go grab Mozilla from http://www.mozilla.org You be the judge, i'd love to read other people's comments on the lawsuit. Read more about it here: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-820268.html

i assume you're on a 56k modem, try these commands in the console: fps_modem XX - replace XX with the desired framerate, i normally use 40 or 30, but i suggest 40. fps_lan XX - same as above but used for LAN play. rate XXXX - i'm not sure of the values for other net connections, but i'm on a 56k and i use 3500 try also disabling voice chat and automatic downloading.

Forcing XP to fill RAM before using Swap File?
EddiE314 replied to isochar's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: You can safely disable the swap EddiE314. Windows won't cry about it, BUT if you have photoshop it will cry about it...You can try making the swap very small, like 50MB or something. i currently have my PF set to 100min, 100max. Windows whines and tells me its set too low if i set it to 50 or under. -
Forcing XP to fill RAM before using Swap File?

i have over 700MB ram and i just want to know how i can disable my pagefile without Windows crying about it. After using about 150mb ram the system seems sluggish and i can't figure out why, i can only assume this is related to ram/pf. -
i use Winrar 2.9 also, i have never had any problem with intrgrated Zip functionality, after installing Winrar i set up the file associations and everything's fine, the only thing that bugs me is the search feature, it proves to be too damned slow, i can't figure out how to revert to the one that was in Windows 2000.
