Quote: I'm also fairly certain that since flat panels are, by their very nature, digital devices having to convert the incoming analogue signal to digital (after it's already been converted from digital to analogue by the RAMDAC in the video card) is the source of much of the signal degradation... That's why it is much better to get a video card and flat panel with DVI connectors - then it stays digital the whole way...

Don't use emm386... Right-click on the game's program file and go to properties. Go over to the memory tab, and tweak the settings to your heart's content. Note that you will only get the memory tab on dos apps... If you want to change the defaults for ALL dos applications, go to the Windows directory and edit the properties of the shortcut called "_default".

Quote: Yes you will be able to run other programs. Just minimize WinVu and double click on the empty background. Task manager (old win 3.x - 9.x) comes up and from there you can choose Run Task or Open Program (something like that). Really? Wow, I've never tried that. Not that I'm gonna install 9x to try it, but that's good to know nonetheless...

Try Process Explorer to find out what program has what files open

Yes, you will need to reboot, and no, you will not be able to run other programs. That's why you have to make sure you know how to change it back without using windows programs. You'll have to boot to dos mode and edit it back manually. This "technique" will let you give as many resources to the program as possible, but you are basically giving up the ability to multitask. I knew people who would do this to get a little higher framerate from games, but it's kind of a pain to have to keep editing the system.ini file.
-
One trick is to replace the "shell" line in system.ini with the program you want. By default it reads "shell=Explorer.exe" - but you could change it to "shell=C:\WinVu\WinVu.exe" (or whatever). Be aware that this will really limit your computer to running this one program, so the times when you would use this are pretty specialized. Oh, and make sure you know how to reset it to explorer.exe using dos, because once you make this change, Windows won't be able to do anything else.

Hubs and Switches basically perform the same function - they provide the basic link between computers on a local network. The difference is that a 100Mbps hub can only have 100Mbps of total traffic passing through it at any time. On the other hand, a 100Mbps switch can have a full 100Mbps on EACH port, which makes for a more efficient network. This is because hubs broadcast all traffic to every port, so everyone is always sharing throughput. A switch "routes" the traffic to only the port that the destination is on, so it is able to give everyone their own 100Mbps link. And on a security note, packet sniffers don't work very well on a switched network, because any computer should only see it's own traffic, whereas the hub's broadcasting lets a packet sniffer pick up ALL traffic on the LAN. Routers and Gateways are used as intermediaries between two different networks. This may be a link between a LAN and the Internet, or a link between different parts of the Internet, or whatever. I can't think of a good way to distinguish between routers and gateways though, because they are basically the same thing.

Which game is better in your opinion? Baldures gate 1 or Ice

Pool of Radiance (the new one) was pretty much the same kind of game as BG.... I never actually played it though - anyone here tried it? Like it? Hate it? -
Right-click My Computer and choose Manage. Go to the Disk Management section. You should see the drive there, probably with no partitions made. Just make a new partition with the empty space, and format it with the file system of your choice...

I too prefer BG (and BG2), though IWD is fun for a dungeon romp. Also, if you like a well-developed story, I would highly recommend Planescape Torment... -
I like Trillian... it does them all (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, IRC)

You could try making your own cue file like this: Code: FILE "filename.BIN" BINARY TRACK 01 MODE2/2352 INDEX 01 00:00:00 This will only work if the bin file is a single data track. If there are multiple tracks, as in the case when a game has CD music, then you are probably SOL...

Just FYI, this is fixed in XP... icons are restored automatically when (if ever) explorer must be restarted.

The first thing you should check is that these registry values are correct: Code: Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AboutURLs]"NavigationFailure"="res://shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm""DesktopItemNavigationFailure"="res://shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm""NavigationCanceled"="res://shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm""OfflineInformation"="res://shdoclc.dll/offcancl.htm""Home"=dword:0000010e"blank"="res://mshtml.dll/blank.htm""PostNotCached"="res://mshtml.dll/repost.htm""mozilla"="res://mshtml.dll/about.moz" If you want, you could just save the above as a .reg file and merge it. If you get redirected when typing bogus domain names like www.dfhsaklfddsa.com, rather than just general failures, then this will not fix it. I could not figure out any easy way to change the DNS error page, but it is located in the shdocld.dll file. If you use Resource Hacker to open this file, check the contents of 23\DNSERROR.HTM. Make sure that it does not mention lop.com at all.

Here a knowledge base article describing how svchost works under xp...

Just add C:\="Microsoft Windows 98" to the end of your boot.ini. And yes, it's c:\, not d:\, because win9x always places the boot files on the first partition.

My first was a Commodore 64 - I was only like 6 or 7 then though, so I only knew enough to get my games running... something like "load whatever,8,1"... Come to think of it, I still have that beast around somewhere; I wonder if it still works?
-
The thing with mine was that other computers on my network were able to browse just fine - and they were going though my computer with ICS! So in my case it was definitely a browser/os issue. But at least you were able to find and correct your issue as well...

I actually had this exact same problem a few days ago... I also couldn't get to google, and I was getting a lot of script errors on other pages (like windows update). The errors were something to the effect of "class not registered", so it was probably some dll that got unlinked, but I couldn't figure out which one. I ended up booting off the cd and repairing my installation, and now everything works fine again.

This is because hitting "enter" signals the end of a paragraph, so Frontpage uses the <p></p> tags. A <br> is simply a line break, but keeps in the same "paragraph". It's really a matter of convention, but I prefer the way Frontpage handles it. Not that I am endorsing Frontpage - I personally use either Homesite or Dreamweaver, depending on how much I feel like getting my hands in the code. Anyway, if you want Frontpage to go down only one line (e.g. use a <br>), try hitting "shift+enter".

Quote: why should i change it to ntfs ? This is a pretty loaded question - check out this thread for a recent (and rather heated) debate on this topic...

Get more memory. JK2 is very memory intensive, so while you are in the game, some of the other processes get thrown out to virtual memory. Then when you quit the game, the delay you note is from loading the desktop and such back into main memory.

I have a whole album on MP3, any programs that will automati

I haven't tried it, but it looks like this might do the job for you: http://www.yaosoft.com/ -
There's no need for bin chunker, because isobuster can deal with the bin file directly. Open the bin in isobuster, and find the dat file... that's really the only file you need. That file should be close to the entire size of the image. Try this file in WiMP and see what happens - if it still doesn't work, post the message that WiMP gives you and we'll go from there...
-
Well, first use a program like IsoBuster to extract the files from the disc image. Then look for the huge .dat file - that is the file with the actual movie. Open that with WiMP (or any other media player) and enjoy!
