When you update your BIOS, it doesn't really patch anything - it just replaces the existing bios. So, for example, if you start from version 1.0, upgrade to 1.1, and then upgrade to 1.2, your machine will be in the exact same state as if you had just gone directly to version 1.2. And like Brian said, the manufacturer will usually include all of 1.1's benefits in 1.2, and just fix the problems and/or limitations of the previous versions.

Quote: formatted my drive as one partition 152gig. don't ask me where the 8gig went. That's because when a drive manufacturer says gig they mean 1 billion bytes, and when the OS says gig it means 2^30 bytes (2^30 = 1,073,741,824). So a 160 "GB" drive = 160,000,000,000 bytes = 156,250,000 KB = 152,587.9 MB = 149 GB. That MB number is probably what you're seeing...

Hmm, I just looked closer, and those two files appear to be the exact same thing. Also, I found a URL for the cab containing googlenav.dll: http://toolbar.google.com/data/en/deleon/1.1.54-deleon/GoogleNav.cab. I'm still not sure what you have to do to get it installed though....

The Google Toolbar is installed into "%windir%\Downloaded Program Files". Problem is, you have to disable the "special folder" view in order to see the actual files. To do this, drop to a command prompt and change to that directory. Type "attrib -h desktop.ini". Then rename desktop.ini to somthing else, like "ren desktop.ini ~desktop.ini". Now you can browse this folder normally in explorer and see the actual files. My computer has two files related to Google: "googlenav.dll" and "GoogleToolbar_en_1.1.54-deleon.dll". I don't think that you can just copy these files to install it, but you can try it. Oh, and don't forget to fix "desktop.ini" back the way it was when you're done...

changing INTERNET TIME SYCHRONIZATION schedule to be more fr
CUViper replied to djelite's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: Period : REG_DWORD or REG_SZ Used to control how often the time service synchronizes. If a string value is specified, it must be one of special ones listed below. From this, it sounds like it's okay if the value is not there. You should be ba able to just add it in there and reboot for the change to take effect. You can see if it worked by going into "Date and Time Properties" on the "Internet Time" tab, and check what it says for "Next synchronization"... -
pmistry - I have never heard of ANY os that could do an uninstall after upgrading... come to think of it, I can't think of any software that "downgrades" gracefully either...

ATTBI loads DoubleClick & Impulse2Buy cookies upon acces
CUViper replied to SnapperOne's topic in Slack Space
That's not quite where I was talking about... Go into <Tools><Internet Options><Privacy> and click the "Edit..." button at the bottom. Type in "doubleclick.net" and click "Block", then type in "impulsebuy.net" and again click "Block". IE will not only prevent those sites from placing cookies, but it will also delete any existing cookies from those sites. BTW, I believe this option is only available in IE6, so you will need to upgrade if you haven't done so already... -
ATTBI loads DoubleClick & Impulse2Buy cookies upon acces
CUViper replied to SnapperOne's topic in Slack Space
If you go into the "privacy" tab in internet options, you can set a block or allow status override for individual sites by clicking the edit button at the bottom. So you should be able to put in the relevant sites for DoubleClick and Impulse2Buy to block them from ever setting cookies. -
depends on the video card.... for nvidia cards, you can do this in the display properties. What video card do you have?

Here's a bit of theory behind capacitors: The function for a capacitor discharge is e^(-t/RC). R is the resistance of the load attached to the capacitor, and C is the capacitance. So after a time t=RC, the charge will be about 1/3 of what it started at. So if you can keep RC sufficiently large, it can store the charge for a relatively long time. However, since R is typically on the order of kohms (10^3) to Mohms (10^6), and C is typically on the order of micro-Farads (10^-6), a "relatively long time" would be mere seconds. That probably more in depth than you were looking for, but my point is that there has to be more that just a capacitor if it is to maintain voltages as long as the computer would need (days, preferably months). At this point in my education, I know a lot more theory than application, so I couldn't tell you what they are actually using. I suspect there is still some sort of battery in there though.

Hate to tell you, but I'm out of ideas on this one.... anyone else have a suggestion?

Does your system pass the DirectDraw and Direct3D tests? Run 'dxdiag', go to the display tab, and see what happens when you run the tests...
-
It's a little more involved than just clicking a button - here's a tutorial for you....

Does it happen at all resolutions? If not, you may just have to settle with running at a lower resolution...

Quote: Also where is that clear type tweak page? here

That's what I would try - you can always go back to the manufacturer drivers if the problem doesn't go away....

Quote: Hercules 3D Prophet II MX (with the latest drivers: v.21.81) While these are the latest drivers from Hercules, nvidia has newer ones. Have you tried the 23.11 reference drivers from nvidia's site?

Go to Tools -> Message Rules -> Blocked Senders List...
-
try the config.nt file in your system32 directory...
-
You can type the folder name, followed by a "\", and then the contents of that folder will autocomplete.

The easiest way to tell if RAM is the problem is to go to the performance tab of task manager, and check the "Commit Charge (K) - Peak" value. This is the maximum amount of RAM (in KB) that you have used at one time since your computer was last restarted. Your 256 MB of RAM translates to 262144 KB, so if your peak is near or above this number, you need to get some more RAM.
