If you do manage to run out of ram, whatever program that is trying to use more will fail.... maybe gracefully with an error message or something, maybe a full out crash. If you can spare the drive space, it would be a good idea to make a fixed pagefile, probably a few hundred meg. This will at least give you some warning, before you're totally out - so if the hard drive starts thrashing, you know you need to shut some programs down....
-
hmm.... good to know, thanks! I wouldn't mind if my clock were only seconds off, but I would like to keep it accurate at least to the minute. Mine was about 3 minutes off when I fixed it. Hey, maybe this is a conspiracy by MS: to change the world time from being centered around GMT to their own MST (MicroSoft Time)....
-
Don't forget also that while XP is a worthwhile upgrade for Win2k Pro, the 2k Server versions are still the latest and greatest windows servers available. So MS will have to continue supporting and up[censored] Win2k at least until .NET comes out.
-
That's good to know..... from the links you gave, it looks as though they'll have the same versions as Win2k, where Enterprise Server = Advanced Server, with the addition of a stripped-down Web Server version. Do you know if they are planning to have other specialized versions as well? I understand why you would want the splintered versions - my only concern was what would happen to those who needed a general purpose server. It looks like this will not be a problem though...
-
When you say you enabled the firewall, do you mean you just turned it on? In order for anyone to access your webpage, you will need to make sure that port 80 is open to your computer.
-
Any of the server OS's are overkill for a desktop, and .NET isn't any different. Sure, you can probably run it ok, but if you don't need the server capabilities, there's really no reason for you to run it. As for it being splintered, that doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Sure, for a large network, you might want a whole server dedicated to only one task. But for a small network, this is way too expensive, end overkill besides. If MS does decide to go this route, I hope they offer the "specialized" versions at a lower cost, and also offer a complete version for those who only want/need one or two servers for all their tasks.

Ok, I have cable internet shared through my computer, with 4 computers on the network (all running XP pro). We seem to be having DNS issues with the clients on my network.... The computers can all ping and browse by IP just fine. However, name resolution doesn't work quite right. If I try to resolve a name from another computer, it won't work. However, if I do it from my computer (the "server"), it works, and then I go back to that client computer, and the same website works. But any website that MY machine hasn't already resolved won't work. Also, after a while, DNS will stop working at all. If I then renew the IP address on the client, it will go back to that kinda working state. I entered the DNS servers manually, and that worked ok fo a little while, but then it stopped again. A renew on the connection still fixed it, and it seems to go longer between breaking. I don't like this solution anyway, and something is still apparantly broken on my computer.... All of this may be AT&T's fault though, because I was involved in that whole Excite@Home fiasco, and I just got turned back on today. Today is also when ICS stopped working right too, so that is suspicious. But, since MY computer works just fine, I don't think AT&T will be willing to help me..... Any help would be gladly appreciated!

Thanks, now I know it's something with AT&T.... I sent an email to tech support, but haven't got a response yet. I also called them; the tech I got was worthless, and she gave me another number to call for help (1-877-292-8333) but that number has been busy the whole time. In the mean time, try entering the DNS servers manually in your wife's computer. That seems to work a little better, but it may still freeze every once in a while....
-
I love WinZIP, but being that it doesn't handle rar or ace, I also have PowerArchiver...
-
Well, now my computer has "lost" it's DNS capability a couple of times too, so it seems that it's not just ICS to blame. I will try your suggestions, but at this point I'm almost sure it's AT&T, not me. Thanks for the help, I'll keep you updated...

One more thing - I don't know how much access to your computer this trojan gives, but it would be a good idea to change your passwords, just in case....
-
You're welcome! I just checked McAfee's virus database, and you're right, they (apparantly) don't know about this one! So kudos to Norton for picking up on this right away....
-
More info.... I did a search on www.antivirus.com and found this: TROJ_ANAKHA.A - sounds exactly like what you are describing! It is classified as "low risk", but you should still get it cleaned up asap....
-
That file does not exist anywhere on my system, so no, it would not appear to be normal. Have you installed anything that modifies the way the shell works? If you can't figure out why that file is there, you should do a virus/trojan scan.... and make sure you have the latest virus definitions!
-
oops, sorry, now I know what you mean.... I can't find any way to change it. You can manage users through Computer Management (right-click My Computer -> Manage...), but I don't think that's what you're looking for. I will post again if I find something...
-
If you have "Show common tasks enabled in folders" enabled in Folder Options, then there will be a link on the left side to switch between classic view (like win2k) or the XP category view. If you have it disabled, then it will only show the classic view.

cool TB99.... my testing routine is the same as you - I have no need for it, but I was trying to get it to work by tunneling anyway. I didn't try IRC though. That's really a pain how it has to be set up though.... I'm sure glad I don't have to do all this. (sorry shassouneh) Anyway, Morpheus and Kazaa will be more difficult, since they don't document which ports they're using, and which servers they connect to. At least, not that I've found. Oh, and you might wanna just forget about the local proxy (A4Proxy) until you get it working otherwise. It's not a necessary part of the equation, just a convenience factor.

I'm not sure if that idea of using both programs is even possible, but I will try to explain anyway.... First of all, let's define proxy. From the Webmonkey glossary: Quote: A proxy server is a machine used to secure and speed up traffic on a network. The server directs traffic between workstations and Web servers, filters requests made to the Web, or blocks them altogether. The server can be set with specific rules, such as blocking prohibited sites or closing certain ports. Proxy servers can also streamline network performance: For example when a user requests a Web page, the server will cache the page and have it ready if another user requests it. So basically, what we would like to do in your case is connect to a proxy server on port 80, since that is available to you. That proxy then goes out and fetches whatever you are asking for. However, most proxies limit you to http stuff, so we still have a problem. A4Proxy just gives you an easy way to connect to public proxies. It will find the fastest proxy it can for you, so you don't have to worry about it. You just point your software to A4Proxy as a proxy, and it will pass that on to the external proxy it found. So, after all this, we are still unable to do anything but browse the web. But now we are limited by the proxies, instead of your admins, so that's why I hoped we could use HTTPort to tunnel through. However, like you, I cannot figure out what to do with HTTPort to get it working. Like I said before, this convoluted idea may never work, but at the moment it's the best solution I can come up with....
-
From the HTTPort homepage: Quote: HTTPort allows you to bypass an HTTP proxy, which is blocking you from the Internet. So I don't think this is quite what you need, since you don't have a proxy. I did find a program called A4Proxy which looked promising. I got IE browsing and a Winamp Shoutcast stream running through A4Proxy, but Morpheus would have none of it. A4Proxy saw Morpheus' connection attempt, but it just sat there and timed out. So then I got a weird idea: how about using HTTPort to tunnel through the A4Proxy? Sounds promising, but I couldn't get it to work. I couldn't figure out how to set up HTTPort to do this. This idea may still end up being what you can do, but it's gonna take some work... Good Luck!
-
I've never tried it myself, but you should be able to do this through a proxy server. I don't know about Kazaa, but I know Morpheus has an option to go through a proxy server. The trick for you will be to find an open, anonymous proxy server that runs on the ports that are allowed to you. Try searching on Google or something.... to get you started, here's a site I found that seems to have good info: www.multiproxy.org Good Luck!

Client_unknown_by_auth - this sounds like the server is trying to do some kind of query back to you, maybe to find out what version you have. If it is establishing a new connection (incoming to you) to do this, then it's gonna require some port-forwarding.... but the tech support should be able to answer this as well. Of course I don't know if this IS what's happening, but it's a possibility to look into....

Any other fans of CU or Nebraska football out there? That's a game I won't miss tomorrow - too bad I couldn't get tickets, it should be an awesome game. Sure hope CU can pull the upset this year...
-
Don't know if anyone cares, but..... FINAL SCORE 36 Nebraska 62 Colorado!!! That, my friends, is one hell of an upset!

I'm pretty sure it's a modified quake3 engine
