Quote: That's an EXCELLENT internship & experience man... seriously! Consider yourself VERY lucky!!! You must be pretty sharp if your prof.'s recommended you for it by the way, they don't do that for just any student! Yeah, I'm psyched. There were really slim pickings for intern's this year, so I was pleased when this one pretty much fell in my lap. And it's not one of those worthless interships where you just sharpen pencils for engineers and whatnot. It's a fairly small company so I have the opportunity to get involved in a lot of different projects. Quote: Yup, I have looked it over in Windows 2000 DDK (which I have here along with MASM 6.x release etc.), & that is NICE about MS providing the templates they do! (This is why I always really disliked the fact that guys that write drivers for Win32 Os' @ least try to "snow" others in saying it is SO massively difficult, when I know that templates for most types of devices are already available in the DDK!) Without the templates I would be completely lost. I consider myself a pretty proficient programmer, but there's whole a lot of arcaen-looking details in the innards of a driver. But with the example, I can just leave the basics alone and tweak the parts to my needs... Quote: * Not saying it's not tough, it probably is, because you have to deal with timings in the traces on boards & idiosyncracies with diff. equipment's ASICS, but it's not like working with no idea or help either from scratch! The hardware is a lot harder to deal with than software issues. The 80-100 volt pulses into the ultrasound transducers tend to wreak havoc on digital signals, which has been my biggest headache this week... This job is a great learning experience for me though, because I'm getting a lot of practical knowledge (versus books and equations) in a lot of different areas... Quote: P.S.=> Congratulations on being awarded that internship #1, & secondly kick some butt! That job alone may be setting you up for a future writing device drivers, & who knows? One day, you may write drivers we all use here @ this forum for devices we use... apk Thanks!

Quote: * You see, statistically 90% or better of my buyers have been U.S. customers so I cater to them exclusively since I have been tracking paying geographic area purchasers over time since 1997... & they represent the bulk of my 'buying public' over time. You see, now that's exactly the kind of attitude that gives us American's a bad rap... Although, how can you expect your international sales to develop when you refuse to support them? But seriously, I don't understand why you don't put just a little extra coding effort into it to make it independent of the date format. A little quick research and I came up with something that should work. Just change your code that is currently "If Date > StrToDate(Trim('6/14/2004')) then ..." to "If Date > EncodeDate(2004, 6, 14) then ..." -- not that much more work, probably less even from the processor side (fewer function calls, no string processing), and you've got better international support! Of course it is your program, so do what you like... Quote: It also looks for many disassemblers in RAM as well & will shutdown upon detecting them & reboot the system. (AND, That's me being nice too, because I figure most folks would blow or corrupt critical system files if someone tried to hack their work I would guess... I could, but don't!) [rant]By the way, I would be fucking pissed if you did this to me (hack my system) - enough so that I would NEVER use your products. Plus I would tell everyone I know to never use your products, and I would tell all the providers that host your files that you hacked my system with the program. And I would shun you on this forum. There are legitimate reasons for running debuggers / disassemblers, and immediately assuming that any such program is being used to hack your program is a great way to alienate users. I know you are just protecting yourself, but I think any scheme that has a negative impact on legitimate users is never worth it. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"?[/rant] So I guess it's good that you're nice...

It's actually for work - I've got a summer internship at Sonora Medical Systems in Longmont, CO. They've got a product called FirstCall, which currently runs through the parallel port to communicate with the PC. Of course many computers these days do not have a parallel port (especially laptops), so I am upgrading the system to run through USB. Which in turn requires custom USB drivers... I actually did get the CD earlier this week, so I'm ready to go. If you ever need to write a driver, the DDK is awesome - it comes with a ton of examples. I was able to take one of the examples, modify a few of the files in it, and I already have my basic communication working!
-
Well, yeah, it will let you install, but since you didn't have a burner, I bet you didn't get it to burn any cd's, huh... It's not just the autoplay - when I go into "About" in Nero it says "Version: 5.5.10.35 TDK"...
-
Quote: Or does the "free" copy u got with your burner not allow u to get upgrades? The free copies of Nero that come with burners are usually restricted to a single manufacturer. So, for instance, the license that came with my TDK burner will work with any TDK drive, but will not work with a Plextor, or Asus, etc. So in mervincm's case, he's got two licenses for two different manufacturers, but since it only accepts one license at a time, he can only use it for one burner.

XP asking for password on network shares
CUViper replied to bytezboy's topic in Everything New Technology
"Everyone" does not mean everyone in the world - it means that all accounts on the computer have access to that share. If you want it to truly allow anyone to access the share without authenticating, you need to enable the "Guest" account... -
Does the Audigy 2 exhibit the problem of the Live ?
CUViper replied to lorddraxar's topic in Hardware
The SNR of the Audigy 2 is 106 dB - WELL below the threshold you should be able to hear. So any noise you hear on the Audigy 2 is more likely due to poorly shielded cables and/or speakers. As far as driver support, I can only speak for the original Audigy, but they are top-notch! -
I just got a response back from the Microsoft folks, and they just quoted me what I said in my last post...

It would be nice if MS would let me download it, but... Quote: We will not be offering the Windows XP SP1 DDK as a download on the WHDC Web site. However, it is part of the standard MSDNĀ® subscription download and is included with the standard MSDN subscription And I don't have an MSDN subscription. I emailed them to see if they would let me download it, since I did place an order, but I haven't heard back yet.

Quote: Using my APK Whois, calling to whois.internic.net I get: Whois Server Version 1.3 Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net for detailed information. Domain Name: APPCOMPAT.COM Registrar: GO DADDY SOFTWARE, INC. Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com Name Server: PARK1.GODADDY.COM Name Server: PARK2.GODADDY.COM Status: ACTIVE Updated Date: 26-nov-2002 Creation Date: 25-nov-2001 Expiration Date: 25-nov-2003 >>> Last update of whois database: Sat, 28 Jun 2003 19:06:50 EDT <<< ... The problem is that since the internic is not the authority for this domain, it doesn't have all of the domain record in its database. So, here's a chance for you to improve your APK Whois program. The "Whois Server" line above should act as a forwarding address to your program. So in this case, your program does a query to whois.internic.net on appcompat.com, gets back a minimal record containing the line "Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com". Your program should notice this and send another query, this time to whois.godaddy.com. Being that there are many registrars that handle com, net, org, etc., this is the best way to get the full domain record.

I haven't tried it, but you could try adding macromedia.com to the restricted sites list... I don't think it will even popup anything then...

The 'My Music' folder has lost it's icon on the start menu
CUViper replied to Curley_Boy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
It's actually stored in a folder customization file. Create a file called "Desktop.ini" in that directory, and put the following text in it: Code: [DeleteOnCopy] Owner=CUViper Personalized=13 PersonalizedName=My Music [.ShellClassInfo] InfoTip=@Shell32.dll,-12689 IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll IconIndex=-237 Of course change the owner to match your own username. Now get to a command prompt in that directory and type "attrib +s +h Desktop.ini" to hide the file, so you don't accidentaly lose it again... -
I've got QFixApp settings recorded that I was using - it's been a while since I played, but as I remeber I had everything working... (if you don't have QFixApp, download the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft) Try turning on: [*]DelayWinMMCallback[*]Force8BitColor[*]IgnoreMessageBox[*]Win95VersionLie[/list:u]Of course only the first one has to do with sound. Hope this helps you... BTW - just to explain how I got this: WinXP comes with a fix for Earthworm Jim with the program worm.exe. My game has an executable of EWJIM3.exe, so I just copied the setting from the existing one. Then the 8 bit color one I added because I was having some weird color issues...

TESTING WHY A WINDOWS API CALL FUNCTION IS A SWEAR HERE!

ExitWindow[censored] = ExitWindow[censored] = a new fetish? ;( -
The point of the twisted pairs is to reduce interference. Each pair has a plus and minus which form a complete current loop. The point of twisting the wires together is to minimize the loop area, which is the total area between the wires. Large loop area is bad because it allows inductive effects from outside EM signals to interfere with the transmitting signal. Minimizing the loop minimizes the effect. Also, each twist reverses the direction that fields are passing through the loop, so even with the small area still present, the effects will somewhat cancel out. This is also why the order of the pairs matters... if you were to pair the Tx+ and Rcv+ together, and the Tx- and Rcv- together, then the loop area between Tx+ and Tx- is the same as if they weren't twisted at all. However, by twisting Tx+ and Tx- together, and Rcv+ and Rcv- together, then each loop is kept as small as possible, giving the best signal transmission from one end to the other. With short runs of cable, the extra interference from NOT taking advantage of the twisted pairs is probably not going to hurt you. But as the cable gets longer, that extra loop area begins to add up, and you will have more and more interference to deal with. Besides, it's just as easy to do it the right way as it is the wrong way, so you may as well do it right and not have to worry about it...

MMX = Intel's optimized integer opcodes. 3DNow! = AMD's answer to MMX, though they ended up just including MMX too. SSE = Intel's optimized floating-point opcodes. Yes, this can be applied to multimedia, but also anything that uses floating-point code with a lot of parallelism. Xbit has a decent article going into all of these sets: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/prescott-sse.html

Why do you need higher? I think analog TV feeds are only 30 fps, and for a $100 camera, that should be more than adequate...

You need to have Windows reset the boot record. The way to do this is to boot off the Windows cd, go into the recovery console, and type "fixmbr c:". You may need to do a "fixboot c:" as well.

The main reason the cartridges are so expensive is because the print heads are also on the cartridge. So when you just use a refill, you're sticking with old print heads, which aren't designed to last all that long. That said, I have never tried a refill myself, so I'm not sure how visible the difference is...
