You can trick the SFC though, by putting the new file in the dllcache directory

I think you can remove the "/fastdetect" from boot.ini to make win2k leave IRQ's alone... you should only do this if you can't get it working any other way. You may also want to try another IRQ for the scsi card, like 12.

Yes, Win2k does have some problems, but they are not nearly as widespread as you seem to believe. Of course you see the problems on this message board, but what do you expect? In my experience, the most common 'bugs' are due to human error, rather than a fault of the OS. It's not like people are going to post "My computer hasn't needed to reboot in 6 months, under win98 I had to reboot every 2 hours. How do I fix my win2k to be like win98?" The people that are most vocal are the ones having problems. This would be a pretty boring message board if everybody was talking about problems they weren't having! But trust me, there are FAR more people running stable and hassle-free on Windows 2000 than there are who have problems. My advice to you: limit your review of win2k to the experiences of people with similar hardware and software as you. You're right that compatibility can be an issue, so just research it beforehand. If people with setups like yours aren't having problems, then most likely you won't either, and I'll bet you will like Win2k a lot more than nt4 (I know I do).

There are variations from chip to chip that could cause it to go slightly above or below spec. 2MHz is only about 0.3% off though. It might not even be the processor though - something in the motherboard could be slowing the bus down slightly, thereby dragging the processor down.

The problem is that Win2k doesn't always write immediately when you tell it to. It sounds like Win2k is waiting to write something to the disk, and you're ejecting it before it actually gets to write it. I think you can fix this by disabling the write cache on the zip drive. Find the zip drive in the device manager and see if there's a setting about write cache. If so, disable it, and see if that helps.

just to point out the obvious (someone's got to ), is the service set to automatic? You might also check the event log for any clues

ADMINS!!! Let's say we close this thread, huh? I haven't seen anything here worth continued discussion on this otherwise fine forum. And really, if this **** keeps up, please ban them. I don't care how helpful any of them have been (yes you alex), but this is not appropriate conversation for this website. -
GeForce3 all hype or really going to revolutionize gaming?
CUViper replied to ThC 129's topic in Hardware
The features of the card are going to be a godsend to game graphics. The price, though, will cause many gamers (myself included) to hold out on getting one. The card won't probably become mainstream until the price comes down to 200-250. Not that we'll be missing out though, because as pointed out before, it will be a while before any games really take advantage of those features. -
For one, use 'cmd' rather than 'command'. This will enable the features of doskey, it's faster, and it may help some of your other problems as well. Like AlecStaar said, you can use quotes to change to paths with spaces. Or, if you like, you can type 'dir /x' to get the short name of it - it's not always the first 6 letters (it usually is, but my Visual Studio directory is MIAF9D~1, so it can vary).

boot in safe mode, run regedit, and find this entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Activation Required Change it from 1 to 0

Not to mention that DirectX8 is the only API that utilizes the new features, so us pc users still have the upper hand

2419 would hang on install for me, but it worked ok if i upgraded win2k.... try installing a frsh copy of win2k, then upgrade it
-
well now that you have 256mb, I would say that your next priority should be the hard drive. I have that same maxtor drive, and there was a noticable increase in responsiveness when I upgraded my system drive to a 7200 RPM drive....

I haven't used warFTPd before, but you should be able to do it. The features list on their website includes this: "Mounting of network drives at startup (NT service mode only)"..... maybe there's a setting for this somewhere? If it's just permissions you're having a problem with, try giving the service your username/password. To do this, open the service administrative tool, and open the properties for the warftp daemon. On the 'log on' tab, you can specify an account for the service to use.
