Win2k missing BOOT.ini / cant earase the waste in bootstrap
CUViper replied to d1rX's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The boot.ini file is always located on c:, regardless of where the OS is installed. You need to have "show hidden files and folders" enabled, as well as "hide protected operating system files" disabled. Then you should be able to see the boot.ini file, as well as several others (like ntldr). As for changing the win2k drive to c:, forget about it. It is never a good idea to move around system partitions... there are too many places that refer to system directories where they're at now. -
Win2k missing BOOT.ini / cant earase the waste in bootstrap
CUViper replied to d1rX's topic in Customization & Tweaking
you may be able to do it with "fdisk /mbr" however.... by removing the other drive, you will be changing the drive letter for the win2k, and this is a BAD idea.... -
You mean VDMSound? try here: http://ntvdm.cjb.net/ Admins: the link on the main page to this needs to be fixed....

I've used ActivePerl on both IIS 4 and 5, and it works just fine. The only problems I have run into are with some modules: most of them are designed under *nix, and some have a hard time compiling/running on a windows machine. MRTG has a nice win32 setup walkthrough on their website though, and it doesn't look like it needs any add-on modules, so you should be golden....

Shutting down "idle process" in win2k??
CUViper replied to thomas@nordichardware.com's topic in Customization & Tweaking
no, 98 has to have an idle process as well.... -
jesus man.... where's that cool head you're always bragging about? you made a typo, and it was kind of funny what you actually typed... it's not like he called you a name or anything

Shutting down "idle process" in win2k??

yes it does.... did you read it? here's the pertinent part separated more clearly... Quote: The CPU must always have something to do. It's like when you turn on the computer, the CPU is a piece of wire that electric current is always running through, thus it must always be doing something. NT give the CPU something to do when there is nothing else waiting in the queue. This is called the idle thread. -
maybe you should try moving your other cards around so that something else is in that last slot... i think your problem is not sharing IRQ's, but that often the last PCI slot is incapable of bus-mastering, which is required by most (all?) NICs

that's wrong palos.... in nt4 you had to reinstall, but in win2k you can change the HAL in the device manager like giantpotato said. changing to/from acpi does require a reinstall though.

;( what a rant..... Get a sense of humor jd. It's all in jest man, that's why he followed his comment with a big smiley . You're right, we don't know you in person, but the impression that you give in here is that you're VERY quick to offend, and people like that are not good company. Just sit back, relax, and try to have a good time....

also, is that the same version you were using before?
-
which version of winamp are you using?

Does it really matter? Besides, on the front page it says "Post here your other questions", which doesn't specify that it has to be about computers. Also, this isn't the first time such topics have shown up in this forum. My take on it? Of course they cannot change the fact that he will be president for the next 4 years, but by voicing their discontent with the "president select", they are already decreasing the chance that he will be re-elected. On a somewhat related note, i saw "Thirteen Days" tonight.... excellent movie

I don't have that game, but i would guess that it's trying to modify parts of the registry that you don't have access to as a non-admin. For example, if it stores entries under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, instead of HKEY_CURRENT_USER, you can only make changes there if you're an admin. Someone correct me if I'm wrong....

hey Mr.Guvernment, don't take this the wrong way, as i agree most of your posts thus far have been helpful, but please don't include a signature that big every time you post.... in a topic like this there is no need for me to know your entire system spec
-
we solved this in his other post.... turned out to be a bad partition

Disk I/O Error 00008001 what the hell does this mean???????
CUViper replied to falcon26's topic in Hardware
the partition may be screwed up.... try deleting and recreating the partition through the win2k setup -
oh yeah, i forgot about that.... here's the link: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/fccid/

i've used the 3com 905 series extensively both at home and at work, and they've never given me any problems

right click on network neighborhood and choose properties. To keep it from showing the network disconnected icon, you can right click on it and choose disable. A little cumbersome if you're connecting / disconnecting a lot, but it works. Intlharvester: if you're getting the icon even when you're connected, right click on the connection and choose properties. There is a checkbox for "show icon in taskbar when connected"

if you use apcompat.exe, there is a choice to "Disable Heap Manager on Windows 2000".... see if that works...

install win2k.... it has newer hardware support....
-
some of you have mentioned that they can't write the data on the cd, but that's not the point. The activation process records your machine id and product key on MS's servers. Supposedly though you can call them to get it changed if you change your hardware. Also, it gives you 30 days lee-way to activate it, so for those of you who re-install more than once a month, it won't be a problem

upgrading to 256mb of ram does wonders for win2k..... on pricewatch you can find retailers who sell 128mb PC133 for only about $40!

I found a proggie that lets you have sound in those old DOS
CUViper replied to Spaceman's topic in Games
you should read the FAQ's man - most of us already knew about that. There is also VDMSound, which is free......
