just tried a fix I saw on the Diablo2 message boards.... if you change to DirectDraw mode, the problem goes away. This definitely points to a driver issue. It sucks that we can't use Direct3D, but at least we can now play normally!
-
hard to say.... try the latest nvidia drivers (5.22) and see if they work. If not, then try an earlier one. Some people, myself included, have no problems with any of the drivers. Others have found only one set of drivers that work for them. The only way to really find out is to try it.

Major Win2k problems! !!EVERYONE PLEASE READ THIS!!
CUViper replied to Silent-IQ's topic in Hardware
well said bursar... We've had people like you before, Silent-IQ. If you're so damn smart, then what do you need our help for? And if you're going to treat us like we are somehow responsible for giving you the answer, then go elsewhere. SHS said check the memory timings, and I agree. I had some problems similar to yours, and when I set the memory timings to 3-3-3, all the problems disappeared. If you've already tried this, just say so.... no need to be an ass about it. You say you have tried 'everything', but if that is the case, what the hell do you expect us to do? There is no "major bug" in the coppermines.... I am running one fine right now, and I'm sure others here are too. -
IIS 5.0 comes with all flavors of win2k I would strongly recommend you learn IIS. It is MUCH more robust than PWS....
-
they are for nt4, not 2k

it's too late to get into the stress test if you haven't already... I tried the 5.22 drivers this morning, still no go.... locks up second time like always

nova: is the 8gb limit there for a win9x bootdisk as well? I don't remember ever having problems, but i've never really tested it either To be honest, I've never heard of anyone having a problem with that... I do know that I have some dos games that run just fine in a win9x command prompt (without windows running), but I have no idea if they are within the first 8gb of my hd....

Like the title says, we are running the Diablo 2 Stress Test, which 100,000 people were selected for....
-
nope, I don't have dx8.... so far it seems to be a problem only with nvidia cards.... is there anybody out there running the stress test on any other card?
-
Here's the MS Knowledge Base article on that error.... http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q101/0/96.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0 Doesn't look like much help, but it's a start...
-
try going into the event viewer and see when the event log was started....

I think you nailed it when you mentioned the drivers. I am running the 5.17 drivers and it looks just fine. There is probably an update in one of the later drivers that fixed your issue... if you can't use the later drivers, then you may be out of luck! Anyone else out there running Diablo II with old drivers to confirm this?

Win2k can run 16-bit apps... if you look at the task manager when you run a 16-bit app, tou will see ntvdm.exe and wowexec.exe. As far as I know, these provide the 16-bit emulation. Old games like "prince of persia" run for me in win2k. I think the problem is more with the later dos games, just before everything went to win98. These games accessed hardware on a low level to speed things up, and NT/2000 doesn't like that! PanMan: for snes emulation, try the win32 version of SNES9x... it works great for me. For GTA, if you have the full version (or even a complete warez) you can run it in directx mode.

lol 5t3ph3n, i assume you mean my post.... what's wrong with a 100+ post thread if it's a serious discussion?
-
happened to me too... What's your video card? I'm on a TNT2U w/ 5.17 drivers....
-
Since when did this become a forum for win98??? anyway, you can use tweakui to auto-logon

Try this analogy on for size: all cars should come with a steering wheel at no extra charge. True. All cars come with a steering wheel. And if you buy a complete computer from Dell or the likes, it will come with an OS. However, if you were to build a car from scratch, why on earth would you expect the steering wheel to be free? Like the OS, it is a necessary part, but no one is going to give it to you. Likewise when you build a computer, the OS is just another part that you need to buy. Besides, if you must have a free OS, you can always go for Linux.....

win2k CAN run 16-bit apps.... see this post: http://www.ntcompatible.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000772.html

you should try to convince them that there is NO learning curve in going from IE4 to IE5... no employee training necessary. Maybe that will convince them that it would be MUCH harder (maybe even impossible) to try to use IE4 in win2k, and to just stick with IE5
-
I run it at 1024x768 too.... absolutely beautiful!
-
Why would you want IE4 instead of IE5???
-
works fine for me.... what drivers are you using? I never was able to get the liveware working properly, so I am still using the win2k WDM drivers. If you are using the liveware drivers, try disabling eax and 3d sound in the game. [This message has been edited by CUViper (edited 25 May 2000).]

you can do password-based sharing in win2k? please do tell... it looks completely user-based to me. I know you could enable the guest account and use that password, but what if, say, I want to have one password on one share and a different password on another?
-
no, woodlet.... unless you're stupid enough to put them in the same directory, the registry will be just fine. by default, win98 goes to \windows, and win2k goes to \winnt. As an aside, I am running them both on the same fat32 partition, and it works absolutely fine. The ONLY thing they share is the program files directory, which is not a big deal. Trust me, all my programs work fine in both os's....

Anyone know of a good webserver program...that is free...and

if you're running any form of win2k, then you can use IIS 5.0, which is on the win2k install cd.....
