    Partitioning a Hard Drive

Quote: I type in fdisk and it says that it is not found. Guys, you are making this harder than it really is. It's not that fdisk can't find the drive, fdisk cannot be found. Creating a boot disk in WinXP does not copy any command line utilities to the disk like fdisk, format, edit, etc. It only copies the necessary components to provide you with a command prompt. It is no different than typing "format a: /s" at a command prompt (though I don't believe you can do that anymore in XP). The boot disk option in Add/Remove Programs (under Win9x) creates a special boot disk that includes the basic utilities you would need to recover your system. Anyway, embj, if you want to play around with formatting, you should explore the options in the disk management tool, like Alec said. (right-click My Computer, and go to manage. Look in the Storage -> Disk Management area.) And in case you're worried, the system will prevent you from formatting/repartitioning a critical drive (ie the system drive). If you were hoping that fdisk would be a built-in alternative to programs like Partition Magic, then you will be disappointed. All fdisk can do is create and delete partitions. It cannot resize partitions, change file system types, or anything else very fancy...

Quote: WTF is double data rate SDRAM? DDR SDRAM = Double Data Rate Syncronous Dynamic Random Access Memory -> "a type of SDRAM that supports data transfers on both edges of each clock cycle (the rising and falling edges), effectively doubling the memory chip's data throughput." But you knew that, didn't you?

    Neverwinter Nights- Worth buying?

It would hardly be role-playing if I just told you what to do, eh? But don't forget that wearing armor will affect your spell-casting bigtime. I would say just keep on with the fighter (or maybe go towards a rouge or cleric) and then get a henchman to cast spells for you.
  6. That kind of stuff is not tolerated here, nor is it necessary to bribe people to get help. If you want help, just give us more details so we can try to track down the problem.

    Neverwinter Nights- Worth buying?

No, it allows you to USE the items, not learn them. If you want to genuinely cast spells, you'll have to multiclass. For more info on the skill I'm talking about, see page 85 of the manual...

    Neverwinter Nights- Worth buying?

Sure - next time you go up a level, look into the "Use Magic Device" skill. It will cost you extra points because you're not a bard or rouge, but it's better than nothing...

Password expires in 14 days message w/ 2k

Well, considering you have an admin account with no password, it doesn't sound like you are all that concerned about security... The point of expiring passwords is to lessen the chance of someone finding out your account login information and therefore having access to your stuff and acting like they were you. This is more of an issue in large networks with many users, like a campus or a corporate environment.

Password expires in 14 days message w/ 2k

Right-click "My Computer" and go to "Manage"... Go to "System Tools"->"Local Users and Groups"->"Users"... Right-click your user name and go to "Properties"... Check the box that says "Password never expires"...

    New Forum

this button will take you to the first unread post:
  12. The shared users thing is cool, but it causes some issues with the "last visited" functionality. Apparantly, the "last visited" entry is also shared between sites. For instance, when I go to NTC and click on "view posts since last visit", it shows me the posts since the last time I visited either NTC or the new LC site. And then if I immediately go over to LC, none of the posts are marked as new! Presumably, this is because I was just at NTC. I rely almost completely on this "new posts" functionality to keep up with the forums, so this issue makes it hard to keep everything straight. My guess is this is a problem with phpBB itself, and not the way you have it set up, but could you please look into this?

    Formating / Reinstalling Frequency

I voted yearly, but in reality it ends up but about a semi-annual thing. Although, typically the reason I reinstall is because of new hardware (hard drive, motherboard, etc.), not because of OS problems...

    XP HOME + pre-sp1 fixes and NFS5

No no no, deleting gimme.dll will break other things (like multiplayer). All you have to do is use qfixapp to set "Emulate Heap" on the porsche.exe file. NTGAMEMAN - if this does not fix your problem, then please post your specs (esp. video card and drivers) and we'll see what we can do...
  15. In case you missed it, here's the official mirrors page: http://www.redhat.com/download/mirror.html Last time I downloaded it, I had the best luck from the .gov mirrors. There's two there that have the iso's, and I was able to download at about 250 KB/s from each one (at the same time! )

    Whoah, shiny!!!!!

Quote: Another thing, don't know if it's possible or not, but what about some sort of thing to automatically resize images that are bigger than A x B pixels, to fit A x B? Something like this would have to be client side, as posted images are not hosted on the NTC server. So the server never sees the file, and has no idea if it's too big to fit on your screen. But, I believe if you turn on the "Enable Automatic Image Resizing" option in IE6, it will take care of this for you.

    Advertising the chatroom.

Just installing a chat program will not slow down your computer, and I don't see how you generalize that they all install spyware... I have used both mirc and trillian for IRC chat, and AFAIK neither of them have any spyware... Using trillian might even speed up your computer, because you will be consoli[censored] your other chat programs (Windows Messenger, ICQ, etc.) into one program... BTW, trillian fans around here might want to check out the Microscopic theme. I heard about it in Lockergnome, and I am really digging it...

The speed is great... I'm not sure I like the color scheme so much, but it will probably grow on me...

    Installing 2nd Harddrive

I agree that Maxtor drives are nice, but it is not a good idea to format as fat32 and convert to ntfs. If you are starting with a fresh drive, and you intend to go to ntfs anyway, then it is best to format directly into ntfs. That way you don't get stuck with the small cluster size that the "convert" command gives you. Since you are talking about a brand new drive here, you should format it rather than convert it.
  20. CUViper

    convert and bsod / hang

I've only done it once before, but I agree, I think it makes you reboot and then does the conversion during the boot...

NT networking problem thats been bugging me for years

Quote: The reg key only has to be applied to my XP box and not the two 98 boxes, right? Correct... all the reg key does is prevent XP from looking for the "Scheduled Tasks" entry in the shares of the 98 boxes. The long initial delay is caused by looking for this share that does not exist in 98.

    Installing 2nd Harddrive

    1. No problem, as long as you shut down the machine first 2. Yep. Just open the Management console (right-click My Computer -> Manage) and go to the Disk Management section. 3. I don't know of any programs to do this... IMHO the best method is to just reinstall the programs in question. For most programs though, you could just copy the files over and update the shortcuts. If it has any config files or registry entries that point to the old drive, you will need to update those as well. There are so many variables in program installations that I don't think it would be feasible to write one utility that can move any program...

    Here's an interesting one....

What if you programmed the lmhosts file to identify the IP address of the DC? Of course, this assumes they have inet access from the other network. But at least then their computers would know where to look for the authentication, right? "%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam" has the basic documentation and examples for this.
