    Whistler Application Compatibility Toolkit

    1. The Whistler toolkit on freedrive was put together by me because I noticed that there was better compatibility in XP that could be easily used in 2k. At that time no Whistler toolkit was available officialu until 2-3 months later. My toolkit also included the Application Compatibility update files from Whistler to uodate the compatibility in 2k. 2. This toolkit should not be used anymore. Although the compatibility files that come with it are faaaaaaarrr better than 2k's. They are alot older than the ones that come with the final of XP. The ones included in the toolkit are from Whistler Beta 2. 3. I've been playing around with the files for XP and the toolkit are essentialy the same as far as the GUI programs are concerned. A couple more dozen options but mostly ones related the the new GUI in XP. Your best bet is just to make a backup of the \Winnt\Appatch directory in Windows 2000 and then copy the same directory from XP to that directory. Then load up thhe Application Compatibility Toolkit for 1.5. 4. As of yet there has been nothing that the Whistler Toolkit could do that the 1.5 compatibility kit doesn't do. The ONLY benefit you'll see is using the Apppatch files and using the ACBROWSER to find out what fixes are used in XP so you can use them in 2k.

    Service Pack files

Also in situations requiring the installation of a service pack that direvtory would be needed. I don't think MS lists the situations since they don't want you to remove the directory. If you look at the situations that require a reload of a SP in NT then you'll get the picture.

    Question about NAV

LOL! Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 7.51.850 vptray.exe = 1,112k *Yep. I speaketh rubish alright. It's a common fact that CE is better than the retail. Think about it.

    Question about NAV

NAV Retail is meant for the home user. You can tell by the package that it comes with and the fact that it cannot be manager over the network. It is also more bloated because of that fact. NAV Corporate is more streamlined and doesn't have options that you do not need. It is designed to be managed over the network but can easily be switched to standalone and can be update as easily as NAV Retail. I use NAV Corporate 7.51 on all my work computers. Althought the management console (You can see every computer that uses the servers as a Virus definition server through the console) is not as good as I would like it to be it's still better that anything out there for management of antivirus on networked computers. It's also fully compatible with 9x/2K/XP.

    DOS Emulator for Win2k?

What I've been thinking about is making a bootable DOS CD with a 256 RAM drive. (I have 768mb of ram). The CD would have all the configs alreadt set up and the games extracted. All I would have to do is boot! Most DOS games saved games can easily be stored on floppy. I would do this but Windows 2000 & Connectix Virtual PC play every game I need 'em to play except 40 out of 356!

XP extra to offer games, MP3 features

If they REALLY wanted to make money they would have implemented REAL features instead of just looks. Oh well. Hope they learned their lesson. (Doubt it).

    WinXp a MICROSOFT nightmare?

Quote: Is it just me or has Microsoft gone too far in forcing people to switch to XP by making it incompatible with 2k? Did they point a gun to your head? I don't seem them "forcing" you to buy XP. They are improving a product. A product that went RTM in Dec of 1999. Quote: Also what's the deal with the funky annoying new User Interface? It's called. Improvement for ease of use. (supposedly) I turn off all the extras anyway because they get in the way. For new users that I have showed the OS the new features get in the way for them too. In fact I loaded up NT5 Beta 2 last night on Connectix Virtual PC and I loved it. Options that were removed from the final of Windows 2000 are still in Beta 2 and you can see how they really messed up Win2k by taking them out. . When I looked at NT5 Beta 2 and XP I just laughed. NT5 Beta 2 is faaarr more easy to use than XP. Yes, yes you can turn off the extras in XP. But it still does not help. It's all still there in small ways. I'm not about to pick apart all of them and I can not convince anyone of anything just take a look for yourself and decide.
  12. The same. Only speed increase using differing amounts of ram depends on your motherboard (wether it has some incompatibility), caching problems, or if your using single-sided/double-sided ram. For instance interleaving only works on double-sided ram.

Clearing page file at shutdown option

Security. The pagefile may contain the data that you were working on. Clearing it a shutdown makes it harder to find the data. I would not enable it. The pagefile will be remade on bootup re-fragmenting your files.

Easy Cd-creator 5 platinum and XP no go HELP

Nero is an EXCELLENT CDR burning program. In situations that would make EZCD freeze or error out. Nero just kept on going. I've never had the reverse happen. Also it always seems to be EZCD that has problems with Windows. Not Nero. Nero is great.
  15. LOL! Removing SMP from XP Home just required removal of the SMP Kernel files.
  16. APK, Use MPS 1.1 for 2K/XP. MPS 1.4 slows down USB for some odd reason in both OS's. I've noticed that MPS is more compatibile. ACPI always seems flaky on any machone i've ever put it on if you like to push ypur machine and use it for more than just desktop work and more than 1 or 2 PCI devices.

Windows Media Player 8 (For XP)

Yep, also during Beta 2 of XP I ported MP8 over to 2k. Then some other guys took it over because I got tired of it and now they have done the same for the final version of XP. So new we have MP8 for 2K.

Why connetix doesn't release a Windows 2000 friendly Virtual

The reason VGS has not been update is because of legal difficulties. That's IT. Connectix is a fine company and would have update it A LOOONNGG time ago. All you had to do was ask and they would have done it. I'll look for the link but basically Bleem won and Connectix lost. Anyways EPSX is better than both of them and is FREE too!

    XP Compatibility option doesn't work!!

Wait a sec. I didn't see VirtuoCD. Isn't that a CD emulator? If so it's possibility that it wouldn't work in XP do to the changes in XP (mainly the built in UDF packet writer). That REALLY gets in the way of older programs. I do not have that program but you might want to try disabling the IMAPI service and then trying that program. Couldn't hurt. If it doesn't work then just re-enable it!

    XP Compatibility option doesn't work!!

I don't have those programs but I'll download 'em as soon as I can and check them out. If they worked in 2000 I see no reason why they wouldn't work in XP. This is the #1 rule with Application Compatibility: When running an APP in 2K/XP DO NOT USE APPLICATION COMPATIBILITY UNTIL YOU HAVE PATCHED THE PROGRAM FIRST AND READ ALL THE DOCUMENTATION.
