Price of XP Pro? ......Hopefully not as much as Win2k Pro, L

Quote: and what if i decide that i want to run dual cpu's for sh1ts and giggles? does that mean i should go out and buy Pro after i've bought Personal? I don't think so. As for now, i could settle for the home edition since i'm only running a single cpu. A lot people have come to accept Win2k Pro not as a business OS but a home one as well, xp pro doesn't HAVE to be for business and the Home edition doesn't HAVE to be for Home use. Now server and advanced server are a different story, you wouldn't use XP AdvSvr for playing CS or Q3 would you? No, you wouldn't. You've always had a positive attitude toward things and have never been one to flame, but you shouldn't just treat people as if they were idiots unless they asked a completely "off-the-wall" stupid question. Telling someone to "grow up" isn't very nice and after reading that comment, my only words to you are "Practice what you preach" C:\ C:\Dos\ C:\Dos\Flame\ C:\EddiE314\Reply\ Eddie, You are taking my post entirely out of context. Compare my post to the first one in this thread. I was referring to the basic fact that ALL MS home os's have been cheaper than the work editions. I was NOT comparing features. I think his post and your post are the ones that have problems. Mine does not. (Except of course for what I just explained. ) Hopefully I do not have to point out what is wrong with his and YOUR posts. It should already be pretty obvious.

Win2k Server Installation/Setup

Quote: Should I use DNS,DHCP, WINS or what? What is fastest? Ehhh, you do know how all this works right? DHCP pushed DNS & WINS out to the clients. You have to have a DNS/WINS/DHCP server to push that down. If your running a very small LAN then don't use DHCP since there is no need. Just use static IP's. Quote: I want some kind of network were a user can login on any machine in the network. The users should have different kind of rights. How? Quote: How should I do to remotely control the server. PCAnywhere? What do you wish to do on the remote computer? Will telnet suffice? or do you need a GUI? Terminal Services comes with Windows 2000 and works fine or you can use WinVNC. NT, 2000, 2000Pro, Whistler! What's what?

Windows Whistler is the successor to Windows 2000. It's like Windows ME after Windows 98SE except more so. All product lines for Windows Whistler will be the same as Windows 2000 except for 1 more addition. Windows Whislter Personal. Whistler Personal will be a more dumbed down version of Professional with crippled Professional features and more feautres to confuse home users.

Lazy Game Programmers.

David, Go buy a console. That system will fit you perfectly. Unless you can figure out a way to program a simple OS that runs on all X86 hardware and supports all X86 hardware. Then figure out a way to reagularly update the support because you sure aren't going to be able to keep the OS update nor is it going to be perfect upon release. Also your sure as heck not going to get the specs for all hardware so your going to have to get the Manufacturers to shift their priorities from the current OS that their market runs to your OS. Now your going to have to support compression formats and most likely a browser and such because the Internet and MM Online Gaming is the current fave of PC Gaming. So people will have to install this compression program (unless you want it to install seamlessly as soon as your OS connets to the net). Oh, wait they will still have to input their configuration settings to even connect to the net..... etc...etc.... Why did I mention making a new OS? Because the only way your going to squeeze every single ounce out of your computer is to program in assembly. Now you could probably make a game with an integrated OS but you wouldn't want each and every game coming with it's own OS (would increase game making time to an ungodly amount....refer to above paragraph). I repeat. BUY YOURSELF A CONSOLE.

Lazy Game Programmers.

There's only so much crappy hardware can do. nVidia Riva TNT2 M64 32Mb The Serious Sam Technology test runs great on my Dual P3-1ghz@1125Mhz with a Geforce 2 GTS 64m. Spend some money on the GOOD hardware and not on games. Geesh man. The TNT2 M64 is worse than a TNT1!

Friday, April 6th, 2001. Cold Friday. Where were you?

Where was I? From 7am-7pm I was at work. Then that night I watch 2 DVD's I bought. Pitch Black & The Replacements. Pitch Black kick's a$$!
11. Funny, MS think's it's more important to ship PC'S with P4 1.4ghz processor, with only 128M of ram but a whopping 32m of vram. I think the average home user would need 192M for deskop level in Windows Whistler.
12. I have an executable that'll do it. You want it?

YGM Eddie. I have a web page somewhere in my favorites for all types of decryption but unfortunately it's ALOT of favorites (3,000+) so ummm it's gonna take me awhile to find it.

Whistler Application Compatibility Toolkit

yeah, although there's a slight chance that 2 may need to be checked for it to work. But usually you can get further into the game. So that you know that that checkbox does work but that you need to click another. There are more advanced way to figure out what the programs themselves need from the OS and such but I really haven't gotten that far into it.

Don't choose the OS layers. Choose Windows 2000 and go through each fix one by one if youi have to.

I don't mean to piss everyone off..........

Actually my only complaints with MS are: 1. Laziness in the OS=Alot of stuff I see could have been solved with better work. Geesh, I'm not even a programmer and I can think of how things could be better implemented. I work with the end-user EVERY single day so I think I know what I'm talking about. In some ways yes Whistler is better but in others it is not. It could VERY easily have been better but without me it is not. (Am I humble or what. oh and I rhyme too! ) 2. Sloppy webpage. Disorganized updates. Links that don't work. Geesh, they use conxion or whatever that big download site is and still there links do not work! or mabye it's the web site operator at Microsoft. What they can't hire someone to do a decent job? There website is getting better but it could be ALOT better.

The low down on dual proc

Depends on other factors besides the proc. But for only those tasks the P3-700 would be better. (I have no idea what parts both computers are using I am simply commenting on the processor side.)
