    XP Beta 2 & ACPI.sys

Yep, I installed B2462 last night on my VP6. Install was very sloooowww and the mouse would drag across the screen. Setup even BSOD'D once or twice. I finally restarted the install and forced MPS Multi. Unfortunately none of my USB devices work. Intellimouse USB optical and Sidewinder Precision Pro. I Might get around to fixing it someday....

WinRAR not working in XP for me....

Vamp & Jdul weren't being elitist. He asked if it worked. They responded. Obviously it's user error If 2 out of 3 people got it to work. I think most people presume that if they can make it to the NtCompatible Forum then they have at least some level of knowledge. I work with ignorant users every day but I can guarantee that there's a 50/50 chance I would have responded exactly as Jdul/Vamp did. Chill man. Just chill.

HORRIBLE geforce 2 performance in whistler beta 2

That's odd. 4.29 VIA AGP works fine here. (Couldn't get 4x AGP without it.) Whistler benchmarks the same as 2000. Like it should. This was with the 11.01 drivers. ------------------ C:\Dos C:\Dos\Run \Run\Dos\Run

My sister's PC, I can't figure out what the problem is...

You could try to find drivers here for that crappy mobo http://www.sis.com.tw/support/download/driver1.htm SIS is a really bad company to buy mobo's from. The IDE drivers on this site are 2 yrs old so the IDE drivers that come with Windows are probably better. I agree with the above. Get a better mobo. My personal favorite is the Soyo SY5EMA+ or a mobo that supports K+ processors.....but you already bought this mobo so you probably want to fix it.

    Banshee Under win2k

Well I'm not up on the current drivers for the Banshee but I do know that that card hasn't been popular since early '99. Windows 2000 retailed in Feb 2000 and the drivers have never been all that good. Even you have noticed that your Geforce supports more games than your Banshee. This is simply because the Banshee drivers are crap because they really haven't been updated as they should. Considering 3dfx is dead and is not likey ever to come back... I would say buy a card that is currently supports. Nvidia TNT and up and ATI Radeon and up will be your best choices. *Isn't it amazing that Nvidia's TNT is STILL supported as well as the Geforce's while ATI's Radeon is their only well supported card. AMAZING! 8) 8)

    Firewalls - Questions

What software does the company use to monitor net access? Sessionwall? Most surfing these days most of the bandwidth goes to adds. Heck out of the top 10 sites I think 5 of them are banner sites.

    Improvements to NTCompatible

oops, I forgot SMS too. That software is really neat and I plan on using it more now that we move our network over to ATM. Our network is humming along now on this new ESX-3000 switch but it still needs to be optimized. I'm looking into pushing out customized registry updates, Norton Upgrades and OS updates. Neato stuff! I LOVE FREE SOFTWARE! Now all I need is that version of Sidewinder for Windows 2000. Anyone hear about that or know when it's coming out?

Getting rid of "~" in filenames

ah, so you used Xcopy from a version of DOS earlier than 7.0? and since earlier than 7 long filenames were not supported your files were cut to their 8 character alias. Hmmmmm. If you still had the original I would recommend copying from that in Windows. If you don't have your original you are either going to have to rename each file back one-by-one or IIRC there is a prog that will look at your MP3's and name them but I highly doubt it.

    Improvements to NTCompatible

I wish! LOL! Between people trying to get DaggerFall to work, downloading and testing out the latest ver of Whistler, Downloading Exchange 2000 and migrating network from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000, Upgrading our servers from Windows NT4.0 to Windows 2000, Downloading the latest distros of Linux and looking for progs of what I current do in Windows to what I can do in Linux. (I'm not happy with where Windows is going and I also want to get into Linux more.), Installing Siderwinder firewall to a test machine and figureing out how to use Sidewinder so I can fix our 2 Sidewinder firewalls on base and redo them, Implementing a test network to test newer versions of software and to play around with switchers/routers and IPV6. We plan on implemnting 2 Domains connected to our test "CLOUD" (the internet) so we can play around with various things. oh and figureing out what and howto to write-up stuff for the Ntcompatible website! Whoah!
  14. I use Winimage or if the CD Burner supports making images I use those.

Getting rid of "~" in filenames

So they were longer than 8characters before you burned them. Is that what you are saying? You need to look through the options of your CD burning proggie.

    Improvements to NTCompatible

Oooooo. I'd also put a writeup in there how to copy the bootsector off of any CD and stuff. Also some other stuff I'm working on such as 9x boot CD's and stuff. For instance right now I copied all the FULL versions of the 9x OS'S onto one cd and all the UPGRADE versions onto another CD and I'm gonna make 'em bootable with a bootmenu.

    XP Corporate Editions?

The SELECT vers of Windows 2000 Pro,Server,AS are exactly the same as the Retail versions except for one file (SETUPP.INI). Simply modify the last 4 numbers to the proper number and no more prompt for CD KEY. As for the Select versions of Whistler I have no idea how they will be done but I am sure that there will be SELECT versions and I am sure they will have no check.

Daggerfall- Any problems on Win2k pro?

Still can't get it to install. I wrote a batch file for an installation that makes the directories and copies the files. (Basically the same as the DaggerFall HUGE install). It works this way but I can not install using INSTALL.EXE if I can remeber where APPCOMPAT stores it's registry entries then I would like you to post them so that I can see what other settings it's using for INSTALL.EXE because using those settings that you specified I still cannot run the install.

Daggerfall- Any problems on Win2k pro?

I still can't install it under 2000. I tried it on my old 2k install, on a fresh 2k install, and on my secondary machine freshly installed. All give the same black screen while trying to run install.exe even using APCOMPAT or QFIXAPP. I don't even see how these programs could affect INSTALL.EXE, since INSTALL.EXE is a DOS prog. Is there anything else that you did? I was able to install the game under VMWARE and noticed that the install just copies the exact same files off the HD, creates a Z.cfg files and extracts arch3d.bsa and dagger.snd from the packed.dat files. So what I am going to do now is write a batch file to copy all the files off the Daggerfall CD to a directory. All I gotta do now is figure out how to extract those 2 files out of packed.dat so that I can get the game to run. so: 1. Please tell me how you were able to run the install for Daggerfall under Windows 2000. 2. Can someone tell me how to extract those 2 files out of packed.dat in the \Dagger\Arena2 directory on the Daggerfall CD? (I only need to do this if I can't get #1 to work.) 3. If I am unable to do #1, or #2 then I will still write my batch file but I will have to make a backup of the installed Daggerfall on a 9x machine and then upload the batch file and the 2 files to this website (which I am not sure if I can upload the 2 game files to ntcompatible since that might be illegal) so that other users will not have to go through the pain and frustration of trying to get Daggerfall to work. Without the 2 files (arch3d.bsa, Dagger.snd) and copying the CD and making the z.cfg I was able to get as far as the game maps area and Daggerfall was running VERY fast. Unfortunately I could not get any further because of the missing 2 files.

There's an article on this somewhere on Microsoft. Do you own an IBM hd? (I think I'm confusing this with another issue)
