Force win2k install on PC 20MB RAM

You can force it but there is no point with that amount of ram. Get AT LEAST 32m to get 2000 up and running. Get 64m to actually use it. Windows 2000 itself uses around 50m of ram. The processor is fine BUT GET MORE RAM. That motherboard should support a max of 64m.

    whistler question

I too have issues with Jdulmage's statements but this isn't the thread for 'em. I might post my views later though when I get a Whistler beta. Whistler 2257 is still too early for a proper review.

    Mechwarrior 2 & Mech2: Mercs

I have tried everything I can think of. My version of Mechwarrior 2 is only the DOS version. So I need to somehow get the files to convert it to a Windows version. I know their is a Windows version but I don't see why I should buy it since I already have it..... Mechwarrior 2: Mercs I installed it and ran the Windows version and it didn't work. It looked like it was changing resolutions. I updated to latest patch and it did the same thing. Anybody able to get these games to work?

    Make Bootablr Copy?

    1. Download Winzip 8.0 from www.winzip.com. Install Winzip 8.0. 2. Copy the Windows 2000 CD to "?":\W2PSEL_EN on your HD. (?:\ = Drive letter, W2pSEL_EN = Volume Label of CD 3. Right-Click on Sp1network.exe and extract to the sp1network directory. 4. Go to the Update directory in the sp1network directory. 5. Make a batch file called update.bat and place these lines into it: update.exe -s:"?":\W2PSEL_EN "?"=Drive Letter What update.exe looks for is the i386 directory. So change the F:\ to reflect the drive that has the i386 directory from the Windows 2000 CD. W2PSEL_EN is just the directory where the i386 directory resides. In case your wondering why mine is different it's because I have the SELECT version. 6. Save the batch file and run it. 7. It should update your files and it will tell you when it is done. If it doesn't then you have done something wrong. 8. Download CDRWIN from www.goldenhawk.com. Install cDRWIN. 9. Get the CD-ROM boot sector and CD Marker files from here: http://www.angelfire.com/de2/w2kcd/neededfiles.zip 10. Place the appropriate files from neededfiles.zip into the root directory of W2PSEL_EN. Place CDROM_NT.5 into the root of the CD. Place: CDROM_IP.5 - If you are doing 2000 PRO then place this into the root. CDROM_IS.5 - If you are doing 2000 SERVER then place this into the root. CDROM_IA.5 - If you are doing 2000 ADVANCED SERVER then place this into the root. 11. The root of the directory should now contain only these files: Autorun.inf cdrom_iX.5 cdrom_nt.5 read1st.txt readme.doc setup.exe 12. Open CDRWIN and choose the File Backup and Tools option 13. In the BACKUP/TOOL Operation Choose the Build an ISO9660 Image File 14. in FILE BACKUP List click the DIRECTORY button and choose the directory where you copied the Windows 2000 CD. Click OK. Then click the ADD button. You should see the directory in the big box now. 15. Check the INCLUDE HIDDEN FILES,LONG FILENAMES(JOLIET),INCLUDE SYSTEM FILES,RECURSE SUBDIRECTORIES. Uncheck PRESERVE FULL FILE NAMES. boxes. 16. For IMAGE FILENAME click the three dots at the right and choose a directory and a filename. Then click Save. You should see the pathname and the filename of your .ISO in the box. 17. Check the DISABLE VERSION NUMBERS box. 18. Click the ADVANCED OPTIONS button. 19. For Volume Label use the name of the original Windows 2000 CD. Ex: W2PSEL_EN For Volume Set Name use the bame of the original Windows 2000 CD Publisher Name: MICROSOFT CORPORATION PREPARER NAME: MICROSOFT CORPORATION, ONE MICROSOFT WAY, REDMOND WA 98052, (206) 882-8080 20. Choose the BOOTABLE DISC tab. 21. Check the MAKE BOOTABLE DISC box. 22. For MEDIA EMULATION CHOOSE Custom 23. For Image File name use the boot.bin from the neededfiles.zip. 24. For DEVELOPER NAME use MICROSOFT CORPORATION 25. For Load Sector Count use the number 4. 26. Click OK and then START. 27. When it's done open up any CDR burning program that supports .ISO's to burn your IMAGE to CD.

    Can't install Whistler 2257

Also make sure you have the latest bios.
  10. DosFreak

    Why?

Thanks for the rude comments. 1. "I said, these games did not work until the company game out with a patch or something. In these cases, they were service packs, or DX8." Guess you haven't been using 9x very long. ALOT of 9x games these days require patches.... or haven't you as a hardcore gamer been playing them? Also SP1 & DX8 didn't fix any issue for my games and I never had any sticky key issues with aformentioned games. 2. "they are going to go out and find an OS that is capable of running any and every game right out of the box without any problems. That's the bottom line!" Again not all games run out of the box or run well at all "without any problems" even in 9x. Wanna use a crappy 9x OS? Fine with me that's your decision of course but I like to muddle through and actually help people out by trying to get the games to work not by giving up and running 9x instead. So I guess in that respect I am not a "hardcore gamer" I buy all the latest games, I play and beat all the latest games but I WILL NOT install 9x to play a game I will try my best to get it to work in NT5. If it doesn't then I'll just wait for the patch. 3. "Oh yeah, Rogue Spear, Nox, SOF, and Vampire TM:R didn't run correctly at firs, so does that mean that for that short amount of time, they sucked???? And who gives a sh*t whether the demo works in win2k or not??" Rogue Spear ran fine here when I last played it a couple of months ago on an RC of Windows 2000. Don't remember which version. Even took it to a LAN party. NOX- Never played it. Soldier of Fortune: I haven't played the full game but the demo ran fine. The demo is the same as the full except with all the extra stuff cut out. Vampire: Ran fine here OUT OF THE BOX. Except for the fact of no stupid save game feature and some graphical corruption on my G400. 4. "nd who gives a sh*t whether the demo works in win2k or not??" Obviously the person who made this site, the people like me who submit the working demos to this site, the people who want to play the demos. The people who want to know if the full game may work in 2000. 5. "when i buy a game i don't want to have to wait for microsoft to come out with a damn service pack just so i can play it. And DX8??? So now we are supposed to use beta drivers that are very secretive and hard to get just so our games will run??" Is it Microsoft's fault that the company who made the job did a crappy job of R&D NO? (Except for the control issue which it seems odd that only some games and some people experience). If you are a HARDCORE gamer then you must know that using the latest beta drivers is part of the trade. Also Directx 8 is extremely easy to find on the internet. Obviously you haven't been looking very hard. Mabye you've been spending too much time playing games. ;( *Since your a HARDCORE gamer go buy a Playstation,N64,Gameboy or some other lame little console. Obviously you don't wanna help the computer world and would rather play games instead of trying to get them to work MR. HARDCORE. ------------------ C:\Dos C:\Dos\Run \Run\Dos\Run

    Whistler discussion

heh. Whistler 2257 boots up in the same time Windows 2000 does. Also all D3D & OGL scores are the same. I love it when people don't do benchmarks properly.....
  13. Then put ME on there but use 98lite. I've heard of people having issues with ME & 98lite so if that doesn't work out use 98lite & 98SE.

    whistler question

I finally got around to installing Whistler 2257 (It didn't impress me much and I soon went back to Windows 2000 anyway I'm getting off-topic) I encountered the same error and here is what I tried: 1. Deleting the specific CAT folder. 2. Renaming the Timestamp file. 3. Disabling WFP. None of these work. I was going to try to copy the Windows 2000 versions over but seeing as how Whistler 2257 could not detect my Asus DVD (Probably a newer version of ATAPI in Whistler for some weird a** reason haven't verified it yet) or my network card (Geesh a Netgear that is supported fine with Windows 2000 and they remove it from Whistler???!!). I really didn't feel like patching Whistler with files from Windows 2000 heh yeah that would make sense. Wasting my time patching Whistler so it can work. I have other issue but I'm getting off-topic again. Anyways try copying Windows 2000 versions of those files over.

Have you ever been soooo Riled up, you just wanna....

Umm, Hauppauge have been releasing drivers pretty steadily and they've never been buggy either at least not in the 6+ months I've owned one. And in the 6+months I've had Windows 2000 drivers (from Hauppauge) for it too.

Anyone know if Baldurs Gate 2 will run in Windows 2000?

DVD speed is not the same as CD speed. DVD speeds are mucho faster. Also games don't use the HD that much.... It could be done and easily. Just look at consoles as an example. DVD's are faaasssssstttt (not as fast as HD that's for sure but still plenty fast for Baldur's Gate).
  17. Now that's a matter for debate. heh. I would try Windows 2000 on there if it were me. Considering it's just a 166 NT4/2000 would be good on it. You'd probly be better off with 98SE but you never know. Experiement.

Not NT related! QNX is out

Could you post a pic? I couldn't find one. Also what's so good about this OS? Haven't heard of it.

Anyone know if Baldurs Gate 2 will run in Windows 2000?

Points of DVD version: 1. Convinces companies that there is a demand for DVD games. 2. Requires only 1 DVD. 3. It would be cool if you could play the game off the DVD but I highly doubt they did that. They could though....but they didn't. 4. Lots of more cool stuff. #1 is the primary reason why I am waiting. I'm tired of sticking in multiple CD's like I did in the ol' floppy days. Pain in the a**!

    Win2k Sp1 disk space - How much???????

    Yep, delete the backup.
  22. DosFreak

    Why?

Don't know about these: Force Commander (video and sound probs) Force Commander suxs anyway. Any game from 3DO (refuse to support 2k) These work: Daikatana (Haven't tried it Demo worked) Sucks WHO CARES IF IT DOESN'T WORK???!! Vampire TM: Redemption (worked fine for me) Rogue Spear (sticky keys)=Fixed in SP1 or DX8 Nox (sticky keys)=Fixed in SP1 or DX8 Soldier of Fortune (problems with friggin user account) (Demo worked. The simple fact of the matter is Most games work and the ones that don't either suck or are no use wasting time on because newer NT5 compatible games are being released every second.

Will More RAM Improve Game Performance?

In Windows 2000 around 256 would be good. Load up UT, Quake 3, Ultima Ascension, Messiah and look at your peak mem. Also do an Alt+Tab while playing the game and look at how much memory your using. Mostly gaming in Windows 2000 memory peaks around 300+m and hangs a little below 200m.
