new here, trying to install janes F-18 on my win2k machine

Nah, The ACT has nothing to do with it. The ACT just allows you to add more to the compatibility database. It doesn't actually add the capability to the OS. The capability is already there. From the Run command type in : regsvr32 c:\winnt\apppatch\slayerui.dll That will enable compatibily mode only on SHORTCUTS. So whenever you need to apply compatibility mode remember to create a shortcut.

Will Hexen II work under WinXP?

Do you mean your monitor? Where do you see this "out of range"? Sounds to me like a refresh rate problem.

    installing 98 after xp

No biggie. After you reinstall 98, simply boot up with the XP CD into the recovery console and do a fixboot and a fixmbr. Backup your NTLDR, NTDETECT.COM, and BOOT.INI files onto the D: drive just in case or for easier access.

can't get "lets explore the farm" to play on xp

MS really needs to push down a patch to make these protected files. Makes you wonder why they never did so in the first place.

conquest of the new world wont start

Copy config.nt and autoexec.nt from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32 Then upgrade your antivirus/spyware detection programs and scan your system.
  8. Yeah what jmmijo said. Stop messing around with puny flash drives. Get a real man's external drive like an external IDE or SATA drive. Your pockets not big enough? Get bigger pockets.

new here, trying to install janes F-18 on my win2k machine

What's the problem with the game? You probably don't need the ACT, if the game say's that it requires Windows 9x then simply create a shortcut to the game executable, right-click on the shortcut, go to properties and choose "Win95 compatibility mode" then run the game.
  10. IIRC, both of the games worked fine for me in 2000/XP but it's been quite some time. Can you explain the prob in more detail? I'll see if I can test them tonight.
  11. Good question. I've never done it since I always do clean installs. I have had to clean people's systems that did do upgrades from 9x to XP. Man what a horrible experience.

Problem in playing a dos game! help plz

You sure it worked before? How much did you play it before? Try these: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=214 I don't have Heroes 2 but if it has a DOS4GW.EXE file in the game directory then you'll have to extract the archive and rename the files in the archive to DOS4GW.EXE....or simply rename your old DOS4GW to OLDOS4GW. You could also try DOS32A instead of DOS4GW: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=7794 If anything I said is too technical then just download DosBox: Http://dosbox.sourceforge.net and run the game in that.
  15. No, upgrading from XP is no different from doing a clean install except with the upgrade you have the option of reverting back to 98. It does not affect compatibility.

    Please. Please help.

ummmm, don't install anything? If a program has dependencies then those .dll's will execute. Some program like explorer will have shell extensions but mostly a program loads what it needs. You'd be better of disabling unneeded programs.

    Dungeon Keeper Patch

I've heard of people having problems with the latest patch. I never have, obvious answer kinda like the old Doctor joke is if it worked before then don't patch it! It sounds too me like the patch doesn't like your ver of DK2.

Norton Ghost 9 no longer sees any of my drives

Symantec did mess up with Ghost 9, It's pretty much just PQ with some minor changes. In theory this would be great but they've somehow botched things up. Not suprising since Norton/Symantec has gone far down the drain for home users since 9x appeared on the scene and the death of PC Tools. Can't help with the Ghost 9 issue since I played around with it a bit, hated it, and went back to my Ghost32 v8.2 and Acronis imaging solutions. Hopefully the next revision of Ghost will be something good but somehow I doubt it since Symantec hasn't really done anything good for quite awhile.....unless you count using .NET for Ghost as something "good", ehhhh... Heard that Acronis is working on a Plugin for Acronis for Windows for BartPE. I worked on my own plugin for a couple of hours this week and was able to get the ability to restore images to HD...still can't backup tho. No big deal since you can backup in Windows. The Acronis BartPE plugin is important since the Acronis Linux CD doesn't allow you to specify third-party drivers (support reasons), so if you try to try to use the Acronis CD on an unsupported chipset you won't be able to backup, with Acronis on BartPE you can add your own drivers which then allows True Image to backup. It took me alot of time but it's worth it...waiting for the official plugin...hopefully it will fix everything or at least give me some clues as to fix mine. I think the issue is more of a programming problem more than a plugin problem which is why I've pretty much hit a wall.

Sound Hardware - onboard or addon?

uhhhh, your comparing an ancient SB Live! to a fairly recent integrated sound chip? Now let's not get into how crappy Creative's drivers are or how they haven't produced anything really noteworthy for the past 4 years but really....you can't do a fair comparison on ancient hardware to new hardware. It's just not done. It's likely they you were using ancient drivers, default latency values, and or a sound card that was going bad. I guess we'll never know.

Drives??????? WHat to do with them!

CS doesn't work for some HD/controller combinations. So in those cases you will have to set set Master/Slave.

    Dungeon Keeper Patch

Whatever the latest one is.... http://www.patches-scrolls.de/ You'll have to use Win95 Compatibility mode to get the game to work.

    Hard drive problem

I'd stick the HD in your computer, download the HD diagnostics from it's website, scan it and then partition and format it from there.
