Odd, like I said try another firewall and see if you get the same behavior. It's possible you may have found a bug in Norton's (imagine that), I'll look around see if I can discover any issues.

Well I don't use Norton Firewalls so I can't help you with the specifics but For firewalls there's usually 2 things you need to look out for. 1. The actual setup of the ACL's, or the IP addresses and ports that you are allowing access to and from your computer. 2. The application control portion of the firewall product that allows access from your computer to the internet. By default with most software based firewalls your allowed outbound (internet) access, whereas inbound is only allowed for specific ports and only if you initiated the connection. In this case when it reports a connect then you are actually connecting to the server but the server is unable to report back the info to your computer. FTP is ports 20 and 21. I found this site with google: http://www.by-users.co.uk/faqs/security/norton/ Also you may want to switch to ZoneAlarm. It's less bloated (although being ZoneAlarm it's kinda bloated itself) and much more user friendly.....and much more secure.

I lost my copy of Shadow Warrior long ago so I cannot help as much as I'd like. Does the Shadow Warrior CD have CD Audio? If so and your playing Shadow Warrior under XP's NTVDM then you'll need to use SapuCdex for proper CD compatibility since NT's mscdex isn't good enough. Kinda freaked me out when I first saw it. Was clicking around through the compatibility database, checking to see how well the forum links were referencing the database. I click over to the forums and I see the new layout This will finally solve the problem of people posting duplicate topics! Big big pain in the something. It's interesting to see that the Hardware forum has the most Threads and Posts. 8,637 Threads 43,858 Posts Wow. One problem tho, Where's the Sims 2 forum? Thankfully the Sims 2 posts have dried up so I guess it's not needed anymore.

Should work fine in http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

Never heard of it. Thanks for the link.

APK, I removed my other post because you posted "Ramdrives can be NTFS formatted & data", my post was kind of redundant, I was in the process of rewriting my post when you PM me, then I had to close this post so I decided not to repost it. Quote: jaylittle The OS isn't going to cache things into SWAP as doing so would be horribly stupid and not help performance in the least. IIRC, NT by default pages it's kernel which you can disable through a registry tweak. Sorry l0st, but someone had to ruin your thread. I'm going to have to close it. I could just delete the offending post but that ruins the context and locking it and saving it is so much better.

Not necessarilly, The GPU would take the burned off the processor. Going from a TNT2 to a Geforce FX or a lowend Radeon 9x00 card would be quite an upgrade even for a 700mhz computer. Of course if you spend $$ on an AGP/PCI card it's pretty much obsolete as soon as you buy it since newer computers won't accept your AGP card. (Well almost all newer computers won't). It really depends on what your going to be doing with the machine and if you'll be keeping it for awhile. If it was me and I was planning on keeping it for a few more years, then I'd try to upgrqade it as much as possible (within reason, you wouldn't want to stick an X800 XT in there)

Yep, sounds like a VESA incompatibility. Okay, I believe the patch did help a little bit in my case. The last time I installed it I used DosBox. You have to mount the mech2 directory in dosbox, then copy the patch files to the mech2 directory, and then run the patch installation. If you don't know how to use DosBox or don't want to bother with it. You can manually extract the files from the patch using Winrar. Once extracted simply rename the extensions to their full names (.EX_ is .EXE). I forget what the extension are for the GIDDI files, so check your installed MECH2 directory for their proper names. Once renamed, copy these files into their appropriate locations in the MECH2 directory. Once you get the patch installed, try MECH2 again. If you still get messed up video then try this: http://www.nomissoft.com/newsflash.html Be warned, this isn't an official Microsoft patch and could conceivably mess up your system. All it does is modify VGA.SYS to support proper access to the VESA modes on your video card.

sigh go ahead, knock yourself out.

Usually when the installation process has a problem copying a file it could be a memory problem, a CD/DVD drive problem, or a problem with the CD/DVD media itself. Compaq's usually have terrible CD drives so that's likely what it is but you should check the CD/DVD disc for scratches.

The installation of 2000/XP can be a pretty intensive process for a computer, stressing processor/memory/hard drive. So you'll need to check all three. 1. Take off the case, turn on your computer and make sure all of the fans are spinning, vacuum and/or spray out any dirt or dust. After that try installing XP with the case off. If it installs fine then you probably have a heat issue. 2. Go here: http://www.memtest.org/ Download the program and test your memory. 3. Finally you'll need to remove your hard drive and find out who makes it: Western Digital, Maxtor, IBM, Hitachi, Fujitsu, When you find out who makes it go to their respective websites and download the diagnostic programs for the hard drive. You can probably find out all the information you need to know about the Compaq by going to the Compaq website and entering the code for the Compaq, the site should give you all the details of your computer, I doubt that it will be very specific on what kind of hard drive you have though.

Well, not too many people ran dialup on 98 (which is a good thing), which is likely why there aren't many responses. Try looking at your dialup properties on your XP box and matching them with your 98 box. Go to My Network Places, right-click, choose properties. Right-click on dialup connection, go to properties Click on the Security TAB and check the settings. (probably CHAP) You also might need "Client for Microsoft Networks" installed. I'd like to help more but I've never been crazy enough to use 98 as a dialup server before.

Kevin Mitnick on SECURITY, & do I agree? How about YOU??
DosFreak replied to Wilhelmus's topic in Security
That's the point. There shouldn't be an open network port. In a properly secured network all unused ports are shutdown and those in use, use port security. Obviously shutting down unused network ports is a tedious task and requires some work, which sadly is why alot of networks are left open to attack. Laziness is the mind killer unfortunately. heh. -
Copy the files config.nt and autoexec.nt from c:\Windows\repair to c:\windows\system32 Also don't post in ancient threads. Make a new thread.

Yeah, I read that earlier tonight. Lots of info I didn't know but it's hard to get the facts from Slashdot. Going to have to find a good book or something for the REAL truth. Unfortunately, that's what this whole mess is about. heh. I wonder if Bill Gates knows? Lots of people bashing DOS, heck they probably don't even know what DOS is! As you mentioned APK, DOS is still usefull even today: Low level access to hardware Low memory footprint Fast boot speed Less possibillity of corruption due to virus/spyware/adware. Cheap to license Compare this to something like Linux or Windows Embedded and for certain types of hardware DOS is more usefull.

Speaking of Hitler, I'm currently watching Hitler: The Rise of Evil. An XVID rip of an HDTV show that I got when I was out in the desert. It's pretty good, I'm only halfway through so far. -

Quote: "What you can find in the trash is simply amazing," said Mitnick, holding up a "souvenir" from his earlier days: a printed directory listing the name, phone number, email address, direct reports and other information about every employee in the company." Which is why any company that cares about safeguarding it's secrets shreds their data. I worked in a Message Center at an AF base for 4+ years handling classified information. ALL paper material had to be shredded with a shredder approved for destruction of classified material. Once it was shredded it was then put in a bin to be recycled or just thrown in the trash, once shredded it was safe. (No, not even the Penguin (AKA Danny Devito) would have been able to piece that stuff back together. ) Of course all it takes is one person taking a piece of paper home with certain information......This is why you constantly remind your users, have security clearances, and punish those people who do break the rules. Quote: Modern technology is an enabler for such attacks: if a hacker can worm his way into a conference room for just a few minutes, for example, an wireless access point can be plugged into an out-of-the way network access point, providing an open back door into the network even when the hacker is parked outside the building LOL. Only if the wireless network was wide-open. If so then it deserved to be "hacked". Quote: "We can't expect our employees to be human lie detectors, Errr...why not? Not only for IT but for any work environment. If someone you don't know questions you or ask you something that they don't need to know for some unknown reason, it's pretty obvious THAT THEY DON'T NEED TO KNOW. It's not necessary to worry if someone is lying to you or not, it's all about NEED TO KNOW. This is #1 on security clearance, doesn't matter if you have an TS/SCI, if you don't work there or don't have any relation to the work then you don't need to know. Gee, I wish I could go around to conferences spouting common sense information. Yes, this is common sense people. You don't go around to every hobo on the street giving them your PIN number do ya? -
Star Trek Enterprise not going to see 5th season...
DosFreak replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
Yep, Lexx is also a favorite of mine but I don't think most Trek viewers would appreciate it, too weird and campy...which is what made it great! I read a couple of days ago that for a full season of Enterprise it would cost about $36 million. If they do manage to raise that much money it would be nice if they create a new Trek but I'm sure that the Trekkies who watch Enterprise probably want an end to the story much like Farscape. -
or figure out what files were modified in the OEM ver to make it different from the NON-OEM ver and replace the OEM files with the Non OEM files, of course to do that legally you'd have to have an original NON OEM Disc.

Don't have the game so can't test it. Here's a thread on VOGONS about it: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=329&highlight=archimedian You may want to try it with GliDOS or DGVoogoo.

Good to here it. NOLFB was the solution for anyone who has the problem in the future.

Star Trek Enterprise not going to see 5th season...
DosFreak replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
Yep, I've never heard of anyone hating the previous Trek theme songs, but as soon as Enterprise came out.... Just finished Forever Knight Season 2 DVD Set, now if only the fan base could generate enough cash to bring that show back!
