The Geforce 256, Ati Expert 128, and Voodoo 3 will not work well for the games that you mentioned. (Well the Geforce 256...MIGHT work but it's doubtful the game will officially support it). If you can find out what computer you have we may be able to provide a better video card.

A crashing program is hard to troubleshoot without an error report. It could be due to heat or memory problems. Since the OS doesn't crash it likely isn't system memory or CPU overheat but likely graphics card memory or overheating. Post at the above posted link for Sims 2 Problems. Thread closed.

Copy these files: C:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt c:\windows\repair\config.nt to C:\windows\system32 Also scan your system for viruses and spyware since this problem may be caused by them.

Try this: regsvr32 C:\winnt\System32\ATL.DLL Then reinstall VDMSound.

Need for Speed: High Stakes & Worms Armageddon I am currently trying to get Need for Speed High Stakes Setup to run in Windows 2000 and I may have figured it out. *sigh* Here goes: On a freshly installed Windows 2000 SP1 with NO other updates installed HS setup complains with a "You must have 95/98". Using the Application Compatibility Toolkit (Not appcompat.exe but the full toolkit) I FINALLY got it to work. So I come into work today and pop it into my work computer.... WTF IT LOADS ARRRRRRRGGHHH!! I haven't put the fix on there HTF can it load???!!! So I try it on another computer which hasn't been updated and I get the same error I got at home. I then install all of the latest application compatibility updated from Microsoft and it still doesn't work. (I know I know it doesn't mention HS in them but might as well try). *UPDATE* I FOUND IT! WOOHOO! It was in the application compatibility Toolkit all along! and Microsoft hasn't released it in their latest update but it is in the Application compatibility toolkit. GO HERE AND DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THIS: http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility/act.exe Do a search of Apcompat.inf that troublesome game that might be fixed. I'm currently working on a .txt of what's been fixed. Will take awhile though because it's BIG. Sloppy work. Putting it in their Application Compatibility Toolkit but leaving it out of their update. What a mess. I should be running things over there. Wanna know how I know that they could have put it in their update long ago? Check the date of apcompat.inf in the C:\ACT\Progra~1 directory. Look in the appfix.exe file. apcompat.inf is dated 5/24/200. Good work Microsoft. Who knows how long they have had it before that. Hey Bill Gates. E-mail me. Fire some people and hire me I'll set your company straight. ;( ------------------ C:\Dos C:\Dos\Run \Run\Dos\Run

Please start a new thread for that problem. This thread has gone off-topic. People who read the topic probably won't click on it to help you with your problem. Thread closed.

According to this: http://www.softwaretipsandtricks.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=17711 http://maxtor.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/maxto...lPTE*&p_li= It's a limitation of pre-SP1 XP's discs. Don't know how accurate that is but it sounds right. You'll probably have to slipstream SP2 to your XP disc, thereby creating a XP SP2 CD from which you can install from and support your drive.... There may be workarounds but it's probably best to do it the right way.

Nope, Closest I've ever come to blogging is usenet and bulletin boards. Guess I need to update. I don't really understand the blogging phenomenon. I guess it's just a way for people to create their own personal pages with interests and then have people discuss the topic of the day? Seems kind of inefficient if you think about it....Although I guess a forum setup would require too much bandwidth, maintenance, and know-how. Which I guess why blogging is the new craze.

I suppose it's ironic. I can understand why Phillipp uses it tho. Faster, more efficient, more secure, less fiddling to maintain it and cheaper. www.linuxcompatible.org is the site.

No, unless you have duplicate files. If your CDR/DVDR drive supports specific technology to write more than the standard 700mb to a CD then you can use but I wouldn't. Standards are for a reason. Say for instance that your CDR/DVDR breaks and you buy another that didn't support the tech. It's better to just buy a DVDR and burn your stuff to 4GB or DL DVD's instead of trying to write more to a CD than your supposed to.

MSS32.dll is the Miles Sounds System. You can download the file off the net...or reinstall the game. Assuming that the copied CD isn't from a corrupted original.

Create a shortcut to setup.exe Right-click on the shortcut, go to properties. Choose Win95 Compatibility mode. Run setup.

Hmm, deleting the descent.tex file works when the error generated is "Found 0". Your getting a "514". It's likely something's up with those builds of DX. Don't know what ver PlanetDescent is distributing. Are you using D1X or D2X? Try these: http://d1x.warpcore.org/ http://www.icculus.org/d2x/

Nah, it won't conflict. I've heard of some rare cases where 1 or 2 games would get confused and disabling XP's sound emulation fixed their problem. (sound was static) IIRC, XP/2003 use IRQ5 and VDMSOUND uses IRQ7.

Microsoft does a great thing imo for users of their OS + wares
DosFreak replied to badnewz's topic in Security
From what I've heard: Microsoft may include some anti-spyware features in IE7. Microsoft *might* improve CSS and PNG support. I highly doubt this since it will break compatibility with the "broken" IE centric sites, but I'm sure they'll implement a small amount of compatibility. IE7 may be .NET based, which as we all know is *mostly* slower. I haven't seen any big MS .NET based applications from MS so I kind of doubt this. Tabbed browsing will likely be included. I think it's safe to say that Opera/Mozilla tabbed browsing will be better than IE7's. Opera/Mozilla compatibilty will be better than IE7's (at least with standards based pages). Opera at least will be faster than IE7. Mozilla/Firefox likely won't be since IE is built into the OS. The only advantage Microsoft will have will be their included antispyware (if it's included). That is until Longhorn comes out and computers come with IE7. Which means...Mid-end of 2006. So Opera/Firefox/Mozilla will rule the internet for about 18-24 more months. It's hard to say how many XP users will use Windows Update to "upgrade" to IE7...or if autoupdate will do it automatically. If auto update doesn't do it then I'd say that Opera/FireFox/Mozilla will "rule the web", until the installed based of Longhorn computers with IE7 installed takes over. If autoupdate does install IE7 then Opera/Firefox/Mozilla will rule the web for about 8-12 more months. -
Don't have any of those games (except for the PC Booter ver of Robotron). VDMSound is for NT4/2000/XP/2003. Sound emulation support under XP/2003 is extremely minimal with only General Midi and Basic SB support (No High DMA support). I personally haven't heard of any cases where the XP/2003 sound emulation is better than VDMSound because it can't be. VDMSound is where it's at if you want to play your DOS games natively under NT4/2000/XP/2003 with as close to as original sound support as you can get. DosBox uses the VDMSound sound code which is why it's sound support is so good.

I don't see them releasing a version of IE for versions of Windows less than XP SP2 (according to the article). This is a bad move, considering that most other browsers support multiple operating systems and MANY businesses are still using Windows 2000. According to the article the beta of IE7 won't be released until summer. Which means that Firefox/Mozilla/Opera usage will continue to grow.... I for one like to use the same browser across all of my OS's and for easier support. Another concern is that their priority is security...with no mention of added compatibility/feature support. Security is a must but not even mentioning anything else says to me at least that the beta of IE7 will be nothing more than IE6 with an XPified interface and probably tons of new-user balloon popups....yay. -
Copy the files autoexec.nt and config.nt from c:\windows\repair to c:\windows\system32 Also you may need to adware scan and virus scan your system, since this problem may be caused by a virus.

Most Symantec software is bloated. At least the retail versions are. The 2 firewall's that you mentioned are IMO better than Symantec's but I can't give you a list as to why. They just are. I'll look around and see if I can find a review comparing the products. -
The demo executes fine. Executable is dated 2/19/99 and is 7,572,480. I don't have the full ver but if you some of you are feeling adventurous you might want to try to compress the machines executable with UPX: http://upx.sourceforge.net/

You cannot run the Windows version of Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries under NT4/2K/XP unless you use a program like Microsoft Virtual PC or Vmware. Your either better off running the game with a dual-boot of 98 or running the DOS version in NT4/2K/XP.

It probably doesn't have enough memory. I haven't run BAK in straight XP for awhile now, use DosBox for it now but for XP try this: XP Edit the AUTOEXEC.NT file in the SYSTEM32 directory and REM the DOSX line. It should look like this: REM Install DPMI support REM lh %SystemRoot%\system32\dosx Save the file. Right-click on Krondor.exe and go to the Memory tab. Max out Expanded Memory. Click on OK to save. Use the .pif or .EXE to play the game! UnRem the line you REMed when you are done! The reason I don't run BAK with just XP is because most newer motherboards nowadays, including mine, do not provide the page frames that NT4/2K/XP need to enable EMS (Expanded Memory). Which is why I use DosBox. If the above doesn't work for you then you'll have to use DosBox unless you want to start disabling devices in your just for one game.

Problems running Mohaa with your Vodoo related Card...LOOK NO MORE!!!
DosFreak replied to The New Guy's topic in Customization & Tweaking
You must not have researched that much. You can ignore the 3DFX error. You have an NVIDIA card which is not compatible with glide/3dfx. You can only use OPENGL with your card unless you want to run a Glide emulator. In your case you need to get OPENGL working NOT GLIDE OR 3DFX. I've never played MOHAA on such a low level card so I'm not sure if your graphics card is not compliant enough or if you simply don't have the OGL ICD installed. Most likely you don't have OGL installed since if your video card didn't match the requirements for the game you'd likely receive a different error. Try taking the nvoglnt.dll file out of the NVIDIA driver package and sticking that file into your MOHAA directory.
