There's also a post at the end of page 2 suggesting that it may be a heat issue. Sims 1 doesn't really push the memory that hard though it is possible, it's about 50/50 either way. Either memory or a heat issue. Did your Sims 1 problems start happening after you added more memory? This could be it. Likely conflicting memory timings or bad memory.

Windows Server 2003 Service Pack #1 Release Candidate: Anyone install this yet?
DosFreak replied to Lotus's topic in Software
Odd...You just removed the "Everyone" group correct? You didn't "Deny" it access by checking the checkboxes? Unfortunately I cannot check this out on 2003 since I am visiting my parent's. EDIT - Okay, just read your link above. GD, WTF do they do that crazy stuff? Only possible explanation is to mess you up on your MCSE. One more tidbit of contradicting information to add to the pile when dealing with multiple operating systems. *Sigh* We are gonna need a neural-net search engine that we can communite wirelessly through the chips in our brains to keep up with this mess. -
Try the disc in another CD drive. We need to determine if the disc is bad or not. If it works in the other CD drive then there are other things you can do such as slowing down your current CD drive or getting another CD drive.

First step: Instert CD/DVD into CD/DVD drive.

I'm going to assume this is a Sims 2 thread. Post Sims 2 questions here: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread30365-1.html Thread closed.

Accesing Files From A Different Xp Installation
DosFreak replied to firechimp's topic in Everything New Technology
Ah, yeah this is MS user friendliness popping up again. Double-click on My Computer, Go to Tools, Folder Options, View, Scroll all the way down to the bottom, Uncheck "Use simple file sharing". Now you should have your Security Tab. -

Accesing Files From A Different Xp Installation
DosFreak replied to firechimp's topic in Everything New Technology
Just browse to the folder where your files are located. Right-click on the folder, go to properties, go to security, If your name isn't on the list then Click ADD and add it, You may also have to hit the ADVANCED button, Go to the OWNER tab, and choose your username, Also check the "Replace permissions entries" checkbox. -
Originally posted by Chii: Quote: Ok, I have a problem with my Sims 2 and so far, no one can help me! I bought the game months ago and found out I couldn't play it because I didn't have a video card for it. So I bought a video card, it's an ATI Radeon..It's a great video card! So now my game started to work, only It would freeze after 10 minutes! So I thought I needed more ram, I bought another 256 of ram recently, so now I have 512 of ram! It STILL froze after 15 to 20 minutes!! I tried playing the game without sound to see if it was my sound driver, the game ran for about 25 to 30 minutes, so I thought It was my sound driver. But then, as soon as I saved, it froze again! Most of the time, it's when I save that the game freezes! WHY does it do this? There's NO reason for it to freeze!! I have lots of space, memory and ram, plus a really good video card!! WHY?? Can you help me PLEASE!!? Thank you!! Chantal A game freezing does not mean that you need more RAM. What it does mean is that something is wrong with your computer. When it "freezes" can you press NUMLOCK and see the green light? If you see the green light then it usually means that your computer didn't freeze, just the game. (If so press, CTRL+ALT+DEL and end the SIMS 2 task) So what we need to determine is if the computer itself freezes or just the game. If it is the computer then I would recommend removing all memory except for one stick and then trying your game. If it hangs on that memory stick then take that one out and try another one.

I doubt anyone here will be able to help you with that probem. Most if not all of the regular members here do not play Sims 2. Try here: http://eatech.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/eatech.cfg/php/enduser/cci/home.php?p_sid=h80Wycvh Also do not post new Sims 2 posts. All Sims 2 problems should be posted in The Sims 2 Problem Solving thread: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread30365-1.html

Originally posted by boredinbelding82: Quote: Alright....I've ready everyone else's problems and mine is different. I have windows XP...the game installed fine and played fine for a little while...now it loads and freezes and I have to turn off the power and try again. The error report is saying something about RADEON IGP 320M is the problem. I don't even know what that means, but it's ticking me off. Actually I don't really know how to work these types of sites either so if you could email it to me, that would be great. My email address is andrea_huddleston@yahoo.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hope to hear from you soon.... Hmmm, a little more info on the error would be helpful. If the game loads and the freezes it possibly points to heat/memory issues....but if you are getting an error about your RADEON then it's hard to say without knowing what exactly the error said. I'm guessing this is a laptop? I wonder if the integrated Radeon has temperature monitoring capabilities...... Best guess for now would be to install the latest drivers for the Radeon.

Windows XP SP2 vs. Windows 2K SP4 a whole new ballgame
DosFreak replied to seraph1977's topic in Software
Originally posted by seraph1977: Quote: Overall, on this website, as well as several others that I like to check out now and then, it seems that despite the feeling that XP "has it for multi-media" in ways that Win2k just doesn't...overall a larger number of legacy software programs or games seem to work on Win 2K(admittidly with some effort at times), but many of these won't even install on XP, even in "compatability" mode. Yet a good number of these, will install on 2K and will also play. What are these "software programs or games" that won't install on XP SP2 but will install on 2K? Blanket statements do not good arguments make. Quote: 1. Despite the claims of numerous security patches and fixes included in WinXP SP2, i've seen the number of complaints in regards to spyware/adware, and virus issues with XP go through the roof compared back to XP SP1 or SP1a days. I've even personally witnessed a large number of active X and other spyware/adware programs that almost seem designed specificly to attack SP2 systems. I had my own computer infested with one for days calling itself "internet optimizer". Yet a good number of them don't bother an SP1 XP or a 2K Windows install. So your solution is to downgrade to SP1 or use Windows 2000? I have a better solution: 1 Use a firewall 2. Don't use IE... 3. Don't run as Admin. 4. Better yet use Linux. Quote: 2. Microsoft made a major overhaul to how many key systems work in XP with the SP2. Yet they basicly neglected to make any real effort to make certain that even programs or games that worked in pre-SP2 XP, would still function afterwords. I've had to help a large number of friends and family since that SP came out, roll back their XP installs to SP1 or SP1a. The reason? There are a large number of even commercial software programs and games that have serious issues with working properly, if at all, on an SP2 XP. That kind of drastic overhaul of the OS should have come out on staged updates to give programmers a chance to update and adapt their code. Instead Microsoft basicly came out with a "Screw you, we're doing it anyways." type of attitude towards the whole service pack. Again list these "commercial software programs and games" that do not work due to SP2. The updates in SP2 are staged. Most SP2 updates are actually all of the hotfixes released on the Windows Update site MONTHS before SP2 was released (theoretically the fixed being in the SP mean they were tested more). A small portion of the service pack are features and or hotfixes that you have to pay M$ for. Quote: 3. With SP2, if you are fortunate to have a copy of XP originally that predates this, even more of the whole OS is updated and adapted towards the "certified Windows or authentic Windows" activation B.S. that Microsoft has begun to force onto consumers. This is a big mistake in my opinion. Sure, it helps Microsoft combat piracy. It also helps to make absolutely certain that Microsoft is going to rake in an even larger amount of money in the future, at the expense of poor consumers. XP had activation from the start. If your lucky enough to get your hands on the SELECT vers of XP that don't activation then your good to go. If you aren't that lucky then about 5 minutes with google and you can find solutions to convert your non-SELECT ver to a SELECT ver or you can just some hack somewhere to activate your copy. If you care that much about the issue then that is what you do....if you don't then you do what most people do and put up with it since they know no better. Quote: 3a. How many people know how this bogus "authenticating" software works? Any of you have much experience with it? If you don't yet, your going to. Eventually all Microsoft Software is going to contain it. They've stated as much. How does it work? Well, when you install the Microsoft program on your PC and go to first run it(this requires a internet connection), it will bring up a screen forcing you to let the program make a remote call over the internet to one of the Microsoft servers. What happens then? Well, one of two things. Either the program(after sending out who knows what actual information from your computer to Microsoft) will activate, load up with a nice thank you message from Microsoft, or...you get no dice. Again...search the net. XP activation has been explored in depth. Quote: 3b.What's that mean? It means, as stated repeatedly by Microsoft, that you are given a certain number of "activation credits" on their servers. It also means if you have one hard drive crash too many, or one reinstall of your OS too many, your out of luck. Microsoft has expressly stated that you get a set number of activations, even if you wave your reciept in their face and smack a Microsoft technician in the head with the retail box your program came out of. So...you go out and spend $500.00+ on the next version of Microsoft Office professional, and darn...your hard drive fritzed that one time too many....guess what? You are now the proud owner of a nicely shiny and Microsoft labeled brand new Drink Coaster! Umm, I've never heard of MS not activating their OS by anyone. I've never had this trouble since I don't use XP versions that require activation but all of the people I've talked to who have upgraded their systems never had MS refuse to activate their copy. Quote: 4. As far as SP1/SP1a XP and Win2K SP4 go, it's a toss up one way or the other, depending on what you prefer and what you get the most use out of on a PC. As far as XP SP2 goes? My vote is Win2K SP4 hands down, or better still, a copy of Mandrake or SuSe Linux with a copy of Wine and Cedega nicely installed. Hmm...that might have something to do with why i'm downloading the new 10.1 official ISO's for Mandrake right now...well maybe. There ya go. The one thing that made sense in your entire rant. Suse Linux I almost though you were crazy until I saw that. -
Worked fine for me in 2K/XP last time I played it using patch v.1.0.5B.

It's possible that if your running DX off the CD that it could be erroring out because of a dirty CDROM drive. Try copying the DirectX folder to your hard drive and installing from there. As for D3D: Go into DXDIAG Go to DISPLAY See if Direct3D Acceleration is ENABLED. Also, right-click on desktop, go to properties, settings, advanced, Troubleshoot, and make sure that the slider is all the way to the right. Finally make sure that you have the latest video drivers install.ed Lastly, Don't post new Sims 2 threads. Post here: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread30365-1.html

Try clearing your temp directory at: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Temp You'll need to enable "Show Hidden Files and Folders" to see the directory "Local Settings". If that doesn't work, try this: http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q110648

Gents, what other forums do you find outstanding on-the-wire out here?
DosFreak replied to AndyFair's topic in Slack Space
NT\Linux Compatible (Logged into forums for first time in 2000) Slashdot Arstechnica (hehe. I know you love this one APK) (Logged into forums for first time in 2000) Http://vogons.zetafleet.com (Since 2002) Never got into the MajorGeeks site that opened after 3Dfiles/tweakfiles went down. The forum doesn't really turn me on. Used to traffic the techpc.co.uk forums since I knew some of the guys that used to be at 3dfiles, but I haven't upgraded my PC in awhile which is what that site is mostly about. -
Heh. Yeah I goofed. I meant if you were using Windows exclusively then you'd want to use Trillians. Since your playing around with IM's. Check out Miranda: http://www.miranda-im.org/ Make sure to download the latest beta ver. GAIM interface seemed a bit unresponsive for me so just on that basis I'd go: Trillian Miranda GAIM If your just going for responsiveness of the UI.

Well there are of course the Mech sequels. Mechwarrior 3/4. Of course you can't compare Mech 4 to Mech 2 since they are so different (Mech 2 being good overall, Mech 4 just good graphics). Heavy Gear is another good one. As for Mechwarrior 2/Mercs under VMware/VPC. The problem there is that SFX under VMware/VPC is TERRIBLE. If you have a high-end PC (2.5GHZ+) then you will want to play Mech2/Mercs under Dosbox. Information on how to run Mech2/Mercs under Dosbox is at http://vogons.zetafleet.com and DosBox is at Http://dosbox.sourceforge.net

I've been comparing the latest versions of GAIM and TRILLIAN. I don't have a write-up or anything but the Trillian interface is better than Gaim. It's more intuitive. Gaim is cross-platform. Trillian is just for Windows. So if you switch between Linux/Windows alot and want the same interface you'll want Gaim. Gaim is of course free and opensource so you can add any plugin that you want or write your own. So if your strictly a Windows user and had to choose between Trillian and Gaim then I'd go TRILLIAN.EDIT...OOPS I said GAIM before! ALso if you switch between Linux/Windows you would use Gaim on Linux and Trillian on Windows anyway since Gaim for Windows seem's a bit flaky wheras Trillian is more polished. Uhhh, don't do that. You REALLY don't want to do that. Sure, you might get away with it every once in awhile but it's like speeding on a cliff while it's raining. Eventually something bad is bound to happen. Read this article for a good simple explanation: http://weblogs.asp.net/exchange/archive/2004/05/12/130556.aspx

Microsoft's AntiSpyware offering "beta #1" screenshot
DosFreak replied to jmmijo's topic in Slack Space
For those who think we are whining about M$ charging for the software..... To me it looks like a conflict of interest for them. They could look at their "TO-DO" lists and say....well that big spyware going around today we could fix easily but let's provide the "fix" in our latest definitions to provide an incentive to buy the spyware product. When they could just release a hotfix for the software that is affected..... The good thing is that once the freeware spyware programs get competition from this software (yeah, it was already out there but not well known), they'll inovate and outdo this product. Well all know what happens to the software that M$ buys out now don't we?
