    Exchange Server 5.5 Dead

Are any Exchange services running at all? What's the Event ID for the error? Your running SP4 right? Was the Exchange Server on the PDC? Do you have an Exchange backup on tape? Do you have an extra server laying around for testing? IIRC, Exmerge cannot be used on an offline database. Every time I've had to recover from a databse that I could not get Exchange to recognize after hours and hours of work, I had to use a 3rd party tool like Ontrack PowerControls which is eeeeexxxpppeeennsiiivveee. I'll go through the writeups on what I went through in the desert. Lots of Exchange 5.5 probs out there due to incompetence so I had alot of Exchange problems to fix..

I can't remember being that I am writing this and can't check, but is there a "sticky" feature here? If so it would help the SIMS2 stuff. This wouldn't be needed if both gaming forums were merged. Then we could stick a sticky thread at the top. IIRC, there was a sticky feature on the older board. Unless I'm blind and can't see it here. Quote: Perhaps also a "readme first" that comes up when you create an account where the first 3 points are: 1. Don't ask for warez, cracks, serials or illegal ways to circumvent copy protection. 2. Don't flame or incite flaming. 3. Don't expect answers by email. This wold have an Accept/Reject choice at the bottom and if you don't accept, no account. This is standard on other forums. Haven't noticed that NTCompatible doesn't have it since I signed on back in 2000. Quote: Another, though a little silly given that this is a board focused on Windows, perhaps a single "Console Issues" room for the inevitable questions that occasionally surface. Just my thoughts for stuff for the new year. F Well if the NT/2000 and the XP/2003 forums were merged (This includes all 5 forums merged into the other 5 forums). We could have tons more forums without making the page too long and unsightly. A "Gaming News" and "Consoles" thread wouldn't be a bad idea...... Ah, Here we go: http://www.ntcompatible.com/thread23542-1.html More specifically the: Windows NT 4.0/2000 and 2003 Server Troubleshooting and the Windows NT 4.0 WKS/2000 and Windows XP Pro Troubleshooting sections and the Gaming forum. I can see a couple of changes I could make to that list. (Can't do it now since it expired). Merge DOS with 9x..mabye rearrange it a little. All of that is too complicated what with trying to figure out which post is which....which is why we should go the simplest route and just merge the NT4/2000 forums with the XP/2003 forums. New Sims 2 Help Flood

It is fun to kill your Sims or to watch them Nude but that gets old...I can play an FPS or an "adult" movie for that..... As I suggested in the other thread about this...we should just redirect all Sims 2 threads to a Sims 2 forum. http://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/forum.asp?forumID=112 NTCompatible is about getting games working in NT.....but not about answering lame questions that can be answered by simply reading the box or...calling Maxis Tech Support.

    Annoying things on the forum

Closed/Deleted the advert threads. As for The Sims 2 threads I've got an easy out. Redirect them to Sims 2 forums. If someone can find the official Maxis forums that would be great. NTCompatible is not Maxis and with such an overload of people, and with such simple questions Maxis should be handling the load. Here's one Sims site I found: http://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/forum.asp?forumID=112

Looks like there are different spellings on the net. I'll stick in my DVD and check out the subtitles.

    Opinions on STEAM

I really don't want to see a flame-war about Steam on this forum. I ask that everyone go on over to www.arstechnica.com. Go to the Gaming Forums and read the HUGE STEAM thread over there. Discussing Steam yet again is quite pointless when all the information is already there. With that said. So to sum some of it up: Online distribution is great but the Steam execution is terrible, Valve/The Internet obviously isn't set up well for the type of distribution they are doing, The Steam EULA is terrible, Paying full price for Steam games is crap, Steam is a bloated POS, It would be terrible if EA/Blizzard, etc. came up with their own Steam equivalent (Tons of Steam like systems to contend with), You can't sell your HL2 unless you sell your account, Distribution via Steam provides developers an incentive to push software out early to beta test, Jumping through hoops to play in Offline mode (authorization issues). Did I leave anything out?

7-zip. It opens everything else and it's free....also has highest compression ratio's which matters the most to me.

    Half-Life 2 vs. Halo 2

LOL! This has been stated as early as the SNES (at least to my memory). PC's are still here and still going strong. Your statement about people quitting PC's is wrong too. Really. What are they going to do? Throw out their PC and just play console? NO. In reality the one's who do "switch" to console will play most of their games on console and still play some games on PC. When their PC get's old, they buy a new one, with improved CPU and graphics power they then may primarily use PC, use both console and PC equally, or still use console primarilly. It is still quite a ways away until the "console" "replaces" the PC.....and the PC equivalent will always be around no matter what kind of "console" you have in the living room.
  16. For those who have this problem in the future.... MS really doesn't care about invidual keys (except of course for XP/2003 when it comes to installing updates). What they do care about is the license. So say you have 2 copies of NT4 but only 1 NT4 key because the other was lost. Simply use the keys on both systems but make sure you have the license.

Wow. Proper grammar (however the heck you spell it) is a thing worth using.

Do you have a licence to use this computer, sir?

Quote: That's why I think before somebody is required to own a PC with internet connectivity (which is most of them these days) they should first have to pass a basic "security awareness" test or something. Starting with how to configure your browser and firewall properly, then "what is a virus-scanner and why do I need one?", "Spam and how to avoid it", "Is this email genuine?" and "If it sounds too good to be true, it is: DON'T CLICK THAT BANNER!" etc... This is done in the USAF before ANY access to their networks. This is also done for any big business that requires computer access. Now for home use....this shouldn't be necessary. The ISP should be the ones scanning/blocking for spyware, adware, viruses. It's VERY simple for them to do and doesn't even have to involve invasion of privacy.
  19. 1. Run a chkdsk/scandisk on your computer and on the external drive. 2. Try a different USB cable. 3. Try a different USB port. 4. Try a different USB controller. 5. Check SMART on both PC HD and External HD. 6. I've also seen this issue with the USB controller on the external enclosure going bad...so if the enclosure has another interface like IEEE1394/Firewire then try that.
  20. From what I've seen the 9GB DVD media are about $10 per disc. Had intented on backing up my DVD collection but looks like I'll only be backing up the 4.7GB one's. I could Divx 'em but I prefer the original media format for a backup.

    MOO2 with W2K ... Can't get to work

2K/XP have a problem with Geforce 4+ cards (and other video cards but the problem seems to affect more VESA modes with Nvidia). Access to most VESA modes isn't allowed. Simple fix for Microsoft to do but it's remain unfixed for just about forever. We identified the problem on VOGONS awhile back and serveral people have written a couple of utilities to patch Windows. Unfortunately we do not have a compatibility list for different models of graphics cards and the patch, so make sure you know how to fix your system if the patch doesn't work for you. Read this thread: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=1659&highlight=vgafix I'd suggest running MOO2 under Dosbox.
