I don't understand a bunch of jargon. lol Sorry. Well according to the information that you have provided. Your graphics card is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrr below the specifications required by the Sims 2. From what I've been able to discover your graphics card doesn't support Direct3D (Well at least the version required by Sims 2). Mabye if you regressed all the way back to DirectX6/7 then you may have some Direct3D support but obviously doing that won't fix Sims 2. Heck, I'd be suprised if the Sims 1 even played on that thing. Is this a laptop? If so then you may be SOL...unless The Sims 2 can be run in DirectDraw.

Just finished Babylon 5 Season 5 DVD set. Awesome ending to a great TV series. Too bad the game never came out.

Got tired of the old Strangelove quotes. Decided on this one.

Whoah, Well the entire story arks over 5 seasons. Let's see. Season 1 Season 1 is an intro to the B5 story. The entire series focuses on a 5 mile long space station in space which is the gathering point for all kinds of alien races to meet, trade, fight and work towards peace. Season 1 sort of follows the Star Trek episode of the week format with different adventures and no setup for a wider story arc. You kind of get hints here and there with the appearance of a key figure which plays prominently in the later episodes (an emissary of the bad guys...the Shadows), but overall the first Season is just an intro. The station is run by Earth, but Earth isn't really the major power like alot of Sci-Fi....actually they are kind of slighly below other races on the totem pole as far as Tech is concerned and are actually not very interested in alien relations which is why Babylon 5 is one of the reasons why Earth is the last space station. Season 2. Has a new commander (Sheridan). Much more character oriented this season than in season 1. Goes into a bit more of the Earth-Minbari war. (Minbari were the first aliens that Earth had contact with....the war eventually ended but caused massive loss of life and Earth almost lost the war). Also starts and ends the Narn-Centauri war (Narn are lizard like aliens, Centauri are napoleon like humans). A little bit more clues as to the Shadows and a little bit more story on their emissary, Centauri have dealings with the Shadows to attack the Narn. A couple of episode of the week shows but not as many as Season 1. Season 3 Almost entirely story related. Commander of the station tries to forge an alliance with races to fight against the Shadows. Also learn who the Shadows are in this season, as well as the Vorlons. A weakness is found in the Shadows defenses to fight them. Narn are now a conquered race to the Centauri, the Centauri Ambassador manuevers his way to becoming emperor of his planet. Babylon 5 also ends it's relations with Earth due to evidence of President Clark assassinating the previous president. Season 4 Centauri Ambassador deals with the insane Centuari Emperror. The war with the Shadows finally ends. Commander Sheridan starts and ends the attack of Earth due to President Clark attacking Earth colonies that do not side with Clark and also evidence of President Clark working with the Shadows. Commander Sheridan becomes President of the Alliance (Alliance oversees communication between races that are a part of the Alliance and protects those races). Season 5 Mostly has to do with Sheridan struggling to keep the Alliance intact since some unknown enemy is attacking various races in a seeminly random pattern. Station has to deal with rogue telepaths that are trying to find their own planet since Earth does not accept rogue telepaths (They have to join Psi Corp, an evil organization of telepaths). Centauri Ambassador has problems with Centauri Regent (He appointed him when he killed the Empreror) who for some reason seems to be acting very strangely. Season 5 also deals with the allies of the Shadows who were left behind when the Shadows left. Babylon 5 is very hard to explain. It's much more real world (for a Sci-Fi show) than Star Trek\Stargate. Much more character related, lots of politics, better story, Better graphics (Babylon 5 used CG for it's space scenes). Overall comparing Stargate\Star Trek TOS/TNG/DSN, I'd say Babylon 5 is better. Mostly due to story and the fact that it felt more real. For instance alot of the storylines in Babylon 5 haven't been resolved in the series, you have to read the books if your interested. (The important ones are covered though).

Command And Conquer returns Kernel DLL error. PLEASE HELP
DosFreak replied to shassouneh's topic in Games
Use Microsoft Virtual PC or Vmware if you want to play over a network. Not sure if C&C runs under Dosbox yet but you can try it. -
Hmmm, did these computers previously have Computer Accounts on the domain and you are now using the same names? Try deleting the computer accounts for those computers from server manager and trying again. Which server did you ping? The PDC/BDC or DNS Server?

The Dell 2650 is a great server....except for the cdrom drives/floppies which don't perform well in the desert! Yes, for a proper backup system an identical server to the ones you back up from is ideal. Unfortunately many shops do not have either the time or the money for the extra hardware. (Until a server crashes, losing tons of data....then suddenly the time/money shows up in abundance.) Quote: OTOH if we've gone without backup this long what's another couple of weeks? Do not think like that. Now if your talking about just not backing up the OS/Programs then that's fine but if there is data that is constantly being updated and your not backing it up then going without backups for "weeks" is definetly not a good situation to be in. Is the NAS your backup server storage? It sounds like this is a small shop so you don't have any sort of tape backup? A DLT tape drive should be plenty for the amount of servers you listed.

LOL. Nah, it's just the craptacular VIA chipsets of yesteryear. Supposedly the latest ones are pretty good but I haven't bothered with a VIA chipset in quite some time.

Hello I need some advice, I have some small home LAN network(Win2000pro)
DosFreak replied to loopdemack's topic in Networking
Sorry, Had to remove the pic for obvious reasons. If you are trying to watch DVD's over a LAN the common usage is to reencode the movie to the data rate most appropriate to your network. It's been a long time since I've done such a thing but if you really don't feel like reencoding your movies then simply buy some Gig nics and some Cat 5E cable and your good too go. Cost shouldn't be a factor 'cause Cat5E is cheap and so are Gig Nics. Gigabit switches are also pretty cheap now too. -

It's sad that overall the modification of Windows OS's by enthusiasts has significantly decreased ever since the introduction of Windows 95....not because the need is no longer there...more because of a "Why bother?" attitude. -
I use robocopy frequently to synchronize my USB drives. Robocopy is included in the NT4/2000/2003 Resource kits. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/detai...;displaylang=en By default it keeps the timestamps of the source file. There is also XXCOPY http://www.xxcopy.com/index.htm#summary Robocopy vs XXCOPY http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy30.htm

I wouldn't trust any Norton/Symantec progs...Unless they were Symantec ESM, Antivirus Corporate Products and Ghost. That's about it. Norton Utilities (System Works in it'sl latest incarnation) hasn't been worth the money since the old DOS Days. If all of your programs work fine then I'd say your good to go....but if you have bought this product and if you like the program then I'd recommend calling Tech Support.

Nvidia gforce4 mx 64 mg VDO card running on winXP...Problems getting mohaa to ru
DosFreak replied to The New Guy's topic in Games
MOHAA is not a 3DFX game. It's an OPENGL game. What your error is telling me is that you do not have OPENGL installed. Simply go to www.nvidia.com and download the latest drivers and install them. The game should work then. Please don't double post. -
Saw this movie tonight. Whatever you do, DO NOT GO SEE THIS MOVIE. In my opinion it made Alien vs Predator actually look good, which is a very bad thing indeed. It's a combination of alot of things. Zombie "blur" effects. I guess in addition to the "zombie shuffle" they decided to speed up the the zombies. It looks cheesy. Very cheesy. Chain guns - Alice is immune to them....I guess. In one scene she is standing between 2 bad guys. The character with the chain gun picks off the guy to her right....then move the chain gun to her left (WITHOUT STOPPING FIRE) and kills the guy to her left. Somehow Alice is unaffected. Physics - Another scene has Alice perform a totally uneccessary and really cheesy motorcycle stunt which is extremely unrealistic. Another has her running down a skyscraper to attack some bad guys below....now this is possible with properly adjusted gear....which in her situation was not at all possible....but is really unecessary because at the top of the building she just took out a sniper. Why not just shoot the bad guys with the sniper's weapon? Only reason I could figure is to show another fight scene. The end of the movie is terrible too. Arrgh, I can't really describe it because if I do, it gives away the ending but I will say that it involves the bad guys doing something stupid....but then you find out that the baddies wanted this stupid thing to happen which just made the previous fight scene totally unncessary! I'm being vague on purpose so I don't ruin the movie.....but the movie is a ruin anyway so I don't know why I even bother. To assure you guys that I am a very good judge of movies. I picked up The Punisher the other day and watched it and was suprised how good it was. It was very good in fact....if you want a movie to watch. Watch Punisher! LOL! For some reason I reverted back to thinking of the movie as Nemesis....since awhile back that was the working title. Yes, Unfortunately it's one of those movies which you have to see if you've seen the first one. In this case tho, it's definetly a rental.

BIND as a replacement for Windows Hosts file for the purpose of Ad Blocking
DosFreak posted a topic in Security
Was re-reading APK's Host file + dialup problems and started tinkering again. Would have done this sooner but I haven't used internet at home since 1998! Only at work or when I visit my paren'ts. Well I decided to hook up my cell phone to the 'net and surf, and what do I find but tons of ads! This immediately made me think of APK and the hosts file. I've never like the Hosts file and I've always wanted to use DNS instead.....the problem was making it easy for a home user to install/configure and understand. So I surfed around for easy ways for Windows users to use BIND and I found it! It is: TreeWalk DNS Server http://ntcanuck.com/ This is basically BIND but makes it easier to configure for Windows users. It sets you up locally as a caching DNS server and then forwards DNS requests to DNS servers on the internet. You modify your dial-up or NIC settings to point to 127.0.0.1, since you are the DNS server for your zone. All you have to do next to get it to work is go into the TreeWalk DNS Control Panel and Start the service.....and your done! For me using TreeWalk was faster than using my ISP's DNS, most likely due to BIND than anything else. Now if you want to block banner ads: Stop your DNS service via TreeWalk DNS Control Panel Go to \windows\system32\dns\etc Edit named.conf with notepad and add the following line to the bottom of the file zone "sped.atdmt.com" { type master; file "blockads"; }; Where sped.atdmt.com = what site you want to block Where blockads = a file in your \etc directory where you will add the zone info for that site. Ok, so once you have that line added, save the file and now create the blockads file. Now within the blockads file, add these lines: $TTL 24h @ IN SOA localhost. root.localhost. ( 2003052800 86400 300 604800 3600 ) @ IN NS localhost. @ IN A 127.0.0.1 * IN A 127.0.0.1 So now whenever you wish to block sites. Simply add another zone "sped.atdmt.com" { type master; file "blockads"; }; line to the end of your named.conf file (changing the site name of course) and you'll be good to go! Go here to convert your Hosts file into BIND config: http://pgl.yoyo.org/adservers/hosts2bind.php Some benefits of using this method over Hosts, is that you no longer have to worry about huge hosts lists that seem to make dial-up flaky, (probably due to Hosts file not being designed for such long lists!) and you can easily carry the file over to any Linux system. -
BIND as a replacement for Windows Hosts file for the purpose of Ad Blocking
DosFreak replied to DosFreak's topic in Security
I believe if you remove the last line in your null zone file (blockads file in my post above), that will fix your problems. * IN A 127.0.0.1 The wildcard blocks hostnames and subdomains of that domain....so removing this line hould allow the @ IN A 127.0.0.1 line to block that single domain. -
LOL. As far as I know there never was a DX6 for NT4. Now there is a SETDX6 program which will change the DX3/5 version of your NT4 directx files to fool programs into thinking that DX6.1 was installed. But that's it. There is no DX6 for NT4. The program is here: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?p=42641#42641 You may have to register with the site to download. Don't ask me any questions about the program since I haven't used it in about 5+ years. The following is from the readme.txt that comes with the file: Quote: ------------------------------------------------------ - SetDX 6 Patch V0.5 Beta by **Hans Wilson/AbSoLuTe**- ------------------------------------------------------ You know this problem: "This game need a newer version of Directx" The solution: SetDX 6 What does SetDX 6? ---------------- It patch the version variables from the NT 4.0 DX .dll to 6.1. Lets fool some games a little ----------------------------- Create a temporary directory and extract setdx6 there. You need the follow files from the system32 directory: d3dhalf.dll d3drg16f.dll d3drg24f.dll d3drg32f.dll d3drg8f.dll d3drgbf.dll d3dxof.dll d3drm.dll d3drm16f.dll d3drm24f.dll d3drm32f.dll d3drm8f.dll d3dxof.dll ddhelp.exe ddraw.dll dinput.dll dsound.dll copy the files also to this temporary directory. Make sure that the files are not write protect. If you get a DDRAW.DLL file in use or DDRAW.EXE file in use, go to task manager and kill the application DDRAW.EXE before. Run setdx6.exe Copy the .dlls back to system32 Copy the automatical generated sound.vxd (for Lucasarts games) also to system32 Add the regkey (regedit.exe): HKLM\Software\Microsoft\DirectX\ Value: Version, Regtype: REG_SZ, String: 4.6.1.0 Restart. Tips ---- 1) Backup the .dll before you run SetDX 6 Keep in mind this is a early beta. 2) SP4 content dplay 6.1 Download SP4, if you don´t have it 3) NT 4.0 compatible games An excellent listing of NT compatible games is on http://www.ntgamepalace.iscool.net I visit it daily.
