You using a dual processor system?
-
Yup, filename size of course. I didn't mention it because I always think it's obvious but not everyone has DOS knowledge! Which is a good and bad thing.
-
Sigh.. DOS games do not care about filesystem type. About the only thing you will notice is that some rar DOS Games/installers will error out on partition sizes that are too big for them to handle. Filesystem is transparent to the application unless it's a program specifically designed to handle the filesystem.

How to extract a file from W2K CD?
DosFreak replied to hardwarecrazy's topic in Everything New Technology
Can UNACE extracrt Microsoft .CAB? I used to use PowerArchiver for .cab and Winrar for .RAR but overall .CAB seemed to compress better....unfortunately I did have a good uncompressor in *nix so I switched back to .rar. -
Corsair. http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/products.html They only have 4000 but considering that anything past 3200 hasn't been approved by JDEC then I'd REALLY pay attention to any online website that have done benchmarks. I believe CPU Computer Power User had an article in their latest issue about memory benchmarks and I believe that XMS4000 took the win. I haven't tried the latest brand yet but I've heard that they do very well in overclock situations + the heatsinks cool the ram considerably. I've also been offline for a LONG time...except for brief excursions to check my email or whatnot so my info may be false....

How to extract a file from W2K CD?

Nah, too bloated and the pic of that woman freaks me out. + .rar is compatible in both *nix & Windows. So I like to use the same prog in both OS's. -
Okay, filesystem doesn't matter so forget about that. Is it a DOS or Windows game? If Windows then IIRC there is a patch available from Westwood to get the game to work but unfortunately it disables networking. I believe that the only way to get the game to work fully is to use either Microsoft Virtual PC or Vmware without the IPX patch!!!!! You may also try the DOS ver with Dosbox but I haven't tried that method yet.

heh. Was going to email the fix to ya but I'm in a situation with low bandwidth so I did some searchin' http://www.cam.cornell.edu/~ewaldh/yoda/winxp.htm heh. I bet he found the fix here.

Hmmm, There should be a DOS install program along with the Windows install program.

Your only solution is Connectix Virtual PC. Make sure that you do not try to use D3D in MW2 or it will not work because VPC does not support D3D.

All right this is annoying me...and I'm sure that I am not the only one,,,,,. With the constant up[censored] of older games and people figuring out how to make them work properly it is very hard to get a solid compatibility database that is correct. For instance (and this is just one example of 5 million): Today I load up NTCOMPATIBLE and see Duke3D on the main page and guess what! It's working perfectly with Windows 2000! Whadyaknow! Wow! So I click on the link and get this: "Works but only on 320x200 resolution. Run setmain to set up sound card, controller etc. set screen mode to 320x200 [is default] Works without problems, only exception is VESA resolutions [320x240, 640x480, 800x600]" I would hardly call this. "working". Ideally there should be different categories. (Much like my own Compatibility list) Works Perfectly (Green) Works with Problems (Yellow) Doesn't work (RED) That is the simplest way to do it. It would be nice for different problem categories but that would complicate matters. Okay now that we have the categories a comment system that only registered users of the web site can log into would be nice. To make things simpler on Phillip and to tie things into the forum there could be a "Post "Name of Game" on the forum?" option and if the forum was already created then there would be an option to simply post to the forum. A seperate forum would have to be created....such as Compatibility Database Games Forum or Compatibility Database Hardware forum. I think this would work out alot better than the current system. I would whip it up myself but unfortunatelty cannot devote myself as much to the net as I used to. Suggestions anybody?

Was thinking this morning that a Poll system for compatibility would be nice. The results could be automagically added to the site...and since only registered users could vote then that would reduce the instances of malicious users.

oops, Updated it last week!

http://www.realpageslive.com/downloads.htm Some are quite big. Mine was 80mb. May/may not be that usefull if you have online access...but if your going someplace with no net access it can be pretty handy. Useful link #999999 brought you by DosFreak!

Hey Dosfreak? Got any tips on which services to disable?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Quote: Speaking of tweaks and such, this kind of goes OT a little but I was wondering why there isn't a setup option/switch that allows you to install either Win 2K or XP for different platforms. For instance choose an install geared towards Gaming or a Graphics Workstation ?!? This is one of the areas in which Linux Excels. Why MS doesn't do this? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps to distingusish their product from Linux they go for a "Less options is better approach" on install for less confusion. -
USB DSL "modem"?? The closest your gonna get to BootVis is to actually disable the specific drivers that 2k loads on bootup. For example when you boot into safemode and you see those drivers load on bootup? Those are just some of the drivers that load when you normally load Windows and depending on your hardware configuration some are not needed. That was actually another project that I was going to get into but the time put into researching that would have really been a waste since I don't reboot that often anyway.

Hey Dosfreak? Got any tips on which services to disable?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Customization & Tweaking
That's on my project list for my ghost project (and once done I would post it here at NTCompat) I was working on at my last job. Never got around to it tho. ; ) For now I just look through my services about once a month and disable one's that do not need to be enabled. Unfortunately this approach requires that the user acutally knows the consequences of disabling a specific service. IIRC, There are a couple of guides on the net (such as APK posted) describing the services and their uses. -
Also check where it's at using Device Manager. Like what it's connected to (ISA or PCI Bus) where it's situated on those buse's PCI1/2/3/4/5 etc etc and what IRQ/DMA if possible....Also check Windows Update to see if it finds the drivers.

Could also try some other things that MIGHT offer a speed increase. Not sure how your DOS Database program works but defraging the HD and loading SMARTDRV may help.
-
Quote: How much memory does DOS recognize? 640k Conventional 384k Upper Memory IIRC, 64mb Extended/Expanded under all versions of MS-DOS. (FreeDos can use all available memory). Quote: Are there speed limitations via networking with DOS? I've never seen any 100m NIC drivers for DOS....it's been awhile since I last played around with DOS NIC drivers but a couple of months ago while playing around with an integrated NIC on a DELL using a Ghost Disk I believe the drivers were 10m. A DOS database program wouldn't benefit from a 100m NIC anyway. I would just verify that your running at half/dup or full/dup (depending on your network configuration) Quote: What other limitations are there with DOS? There are plenty but none that I can think of that would slow down your transfers. I recommend trying this tho. Get a test Windows 2000 workstation. Load up Connectix Virtual PC with MS-DOS on it and try your Database program from there. It's possible that transfer rate/response time would increase. Are you actually running the program under DOS or under Windows 95? If possible try to run it under Windows 95 since you'll have the added benefit of more driver support, later drivers and a faster TCP/IP stack.
