Ah, that was one of my big worries towards progressing towards *nix. No forum like NTCompatible for the *nix side. PROBLEM SOLVED! YAY! :x ;( x)

When's this? I'm driving down there on Tuesday (moving to Macon).

Depends there are many factors: 1. Do you support product activation? If you do not and you buy the product then yes you do support product activation. 2. Do you need XP's superficial compatibility over 2k? When it comes down to people they usually like things to be as simple as possible and what MS did with he compatibility in 2k vs XP was great for marketing. Only allow compatibility to be accessed through a shortcut in 2K versus being able to access it directly on the exeutable itself in XP? Brilliant from a marketing standpoint....but not really that brilliant on the goodwill of your current MS users (assuming they care). I've seen people "switch" over just this one thing. 3. Do you need more updates and undoubtedly more focus by MS on XP than 2K for security/updates? 4. Are you short on cash? Do you REALLY need to buy/use Windows XP? What exactly is it going to do for you that Windows 2000 cannot? 5. Do you have a P4 with hyperthreading? MS in it's brilliant marketing scheme has enabled better performance in XP than 2k with hyperthreading enabled. Obviously your asking about your Athlon XP but undoubtedly you've been looking at those 3ghz P4's and drooling over 'em (well not really since the performace jump over the XP's isn't THAT drastic) Really it depends on what you want. I simply setup a dual-boot (well quadruple boot really) and jump between the two. That's really the best option. Then you do not have to be tied down to any one operating system. P.S. I haven't tried out SP4 for 2k yet (just the beta's) so am unaware of the changes in 2k because of this.

IIRC, it's 64mb (2000 Server) and I believe that the parameters are set in TXTSETUP.SIF...I'll have to check my documentation. I did this way back in '99 when installing a beta ver of 2K on a P100. Ran about as well as NT4. Haven't tried it on 2k3 yet.

Wine is fine but Wine + Dosbox is even better. Of course Native Linux is even more better.

Sweeeeeettt, Unfortunately don't have this game so couldn't help except of course for the OpenGlide suggestion. How many games do you have?

Windows 2000 professional + Mortal Kombat Trilogy = crash ?

Don't have the game but is this the DOS version? Is there an error message or somesuch? -
I currently use CloneCD/Alcohol (moving over to Alcohol currently) to mount my CD Images. You see I used to have a duplicate CD case for every one of my Applications/Games. Eventually I gave that up and started moving the duplicated to CD Images on External USB/Firewire enclosures. I then have duplicate USB/Firewire enclosures for backup. The problem is that I need to be able to mount these images under linux without using emulation. If I have to I will use Vmware but I'd prefer to mount them locally....so does anyone know of a linux CD Emulator that's compatible with Alcohol/Cloned Images?

Since it's a P3 450 it likely has USB1. USB1 will eat up a couple of processor cycles while your on the net (depending on whether or not the USB DSL "Modem" has an onboard processor or not) even if it doesn't it's nothing to really worry about. I would worry a little bit if you plan on using other USB1 devices such as speakers, webcams, mice, keyboards..etc...etc. So if possible I recommend using a NIC instead of USB. As for if your computer will support that speed? LOL. Companies have had P3's connected to 10/100mb Ether and fiberlinks for YEARS. Considering your DSL connection will only be offering you a couple of megs I think you'll be fine.

Never experienced the first prob and as for the second.... Your best bet for both problems would be to use emulators such as Connectix Virtual PC or Vmware.

Found another neat Prog..MOM Server Status Monitor
DosFreak posted a topic in Everything New Technology
http://www.microsoft.com/mom/downloads/reskit/default.asp Received it with my Technet + subscription a week ago and noticed it a couple of days ago. It's pretty simple but it's free and does some things that some of the free/shareware monitoring programs don't. Plus it's supported by MS. Does not require MOM whatsoever. Check it out. -

Can i Delete These Dirs Contents
DosFreak replied to disorder69's topic in Everything New Technology
DriverCache=Has all your drivers. If you delete it then when you insert new hardware then you MAY have to insert your XP CD. Web- Has your wallpapers and the web page look of your folders. Winsxs= "Windows Side-By-Side Assembly) IIRC, It's used for driver rollback and DLL conflicts. It's also used by Windows for other functions such as assemblies. -
Great, another good site to add to the thousands I have saved...

Odd, POD Racer has always worked without graphical glitches on every PC that I have tried it on. Howver, I am using the UK version. I don't see how it would be that diff.
-
Not specifically. It's posted in a thread about loss of compatibility between v8 and v9 OpenGlide. People seem to be having more probs with v9 than v8.

How much space does 2k take up?
DosFreak replied to Radioactive Frog's topic in Everything New Technology
About 600+MB. The Server/AS differ by about 60+...for standard installations. Cannot give you sizes for minimal/complete. People commonly misreport size because they include the swap file into the figure. -
Don't use the launcher. Surf to the directory and run the other .exe. Sorry that I cannot give more specifics but it's been awhile since I last played the game. There's an unofficial launcher out there that works great but I do not have a link.

Dark Reign 2 and the Blank Screen of Doom (win2k prob, hlp?)
DosFreak replied to senselocke's topic in Games
Don't have the full game because it never interested me that much. I do have the demo...last time I tried it the game worked fine. I've never tried the game on a Voodoo 3. What DX ver does Dark Reign 2 require? 6.1 or something? If so your V3 shouldn't have any probs there. Even so the Voodoo brand is about as unsupported of a video card that you can get for NT (Officially anyway). I'd try the game on another vid card or if you cannot do that then someone else's computer. Before you do that try reduce hardware acceleration and see if that does anything. -
Sweet. Glad you fixed it. If the compatibility tab doesn't show up on a shortcut then you can enable it by pasting this into your RUN: regsvr32 c:\windows\apppatch\slayerui.dll
-
Have you tried the compatibility tab or using the ACT?

Sniffer Pro 4.7 here but that's probably too expensive for ya. The freeware versions should do well enough I would think.

Heh, Guess those comp specs weren't in MS testing. Not suprising since MS seems to be testing less and less these days for hardware compatibility. Heck eventually they'll probably push out MS qualified computers which specific MS approved parts. $10,000 home computers here we come..... (Yeah, I'm exageratting)
