The: What Computer Part did you buy this week thread

Quote: don't buy the 9700 AIW yet - wait for the 9800 (april supposedly) to come out with 256mb - i would "hope" that shortly after they will have the AIW 256 versions - although maybe pricey. Last week i bought for my over clocking needs the new ABit BH7 motherboard - allowed me to take my 2.4C! upto 3.1 with stock fan and voltage!. - also grabbed 512 pc3200. Now i am saving up for dual LCD's - either 18" or 19" but i can not find ANY that go to a 1600 x1200 res. Does anyone know of any LCD"s that go to 1600 x 1200 res? all i can find is 1280 x 1024! Can't wait. The 9800 isn't that different from the 9700. It's not like there'll be a game coming out that I can't play on my 9700 that I would on the 9800. Also I'm not sure what the AIW's capabilities would be. Would it be clocked the same as it's Pro brother? I also do not buy product's until they are reviewed by a reputable source and until I've heard good things about the product from multiple sources. This means at least 2-3 months time waiting to know if the 9800 is a good buy or not. The 9700 AIW is out now. 256MB would be nice but I think I can live without 8x AA @ 2048X1536. -
Quote: This is an excel spreadsheet of all of the games that I own. Each game has been tested by me so you can be sure that the results are accurate Currently the list does not include any results for any 3rd party programs. The list has only been tested with the latest updates applied to the operating system and the latest patch for the game. For instance, if you see a DOS game with a status of "green" then this simply means that the game works but it will of course not have any sound in NT without using a 3rd party prog such as VDMSound. I have kept 3rd party programs off of the main list and created a seperate worksheet for them for a simple reason. This unclutters the results and provides a very readable format without confusion. Also due to the constant changes to 3rd party progs and the fact that it is in most cases desirable to just get the games working without downloading anything. Currently my list has it's home here: http://vogons.zetafleet.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=4046#post4046 Updated my list.

Quote: CUViper, yeah sorry about the long winded explanation, it's hard to know who has or who hasn't used what progams at times, or even to know if I've provided enough info. Anyway, yes you can see the image 'inserted' in Explorer, no you can't view the files there, as XP comes up with the dialogue box of not knowing what the file is, even if you associate those files with Cd Anywhere or Virtual Cd, it still won't work. BUT, I've now downloaded Daemon Tools & guess what ? ...hey presto it works fine, so thanks for the referral 'Shakti', it works brilliantly, yeeeehhaaa I'ts a strange world we live in, Cd Anywhere & Virtual Cd charge you for their XP compatabile programs that don't work on XP & yet Daemon Tools is FREE & it works on XP :x Thanks heaps guys for your help, much appreciated. That's the difference between people who LOVE what they are doing and the people who do what they do for MONEY. It makes all the difference. Occasionally you find a company that combines both but that is the exception.

Quote: I redid the Maxblast and 2k install and all is ok so far. I didn't want to get another card. For $20 more I could of had a new MB! This isn't my box! Depends on how you look at it. The newer controller would have offered faster speeds. MUCH faster speeds. Also would have offered the ability to stick the HD's on that controller and the CD drives on the mobo controller, speeding up the system even further by allowing the usage of both devices to their full capabilities. The newer controller would not have needed an overlay which are usually trouble when needing to perform any type of HD recovery or when moving the HD to another system....or even installing a new operating system. The newer controller would have been better supported in Windows 2000 and would likely speed up Windows 2000 quite a bit on that system. Oh, well it's your choice.

Better yet: Go back to the place you got it and exchange it for a better game. Deer Hunter will do. It's a better game.

I've heard of Serial->USB converters but considering that almost all laptops only support 115k for Com port connections. (You'll have to check your computer with AIDA32 or Sisoft Sandra....or simply check Windows Device Manager). You might be better off with an LPT->USB Connector if they make such a thing....or you could just buy a USB PCMCIA card.

Hopefully by mid next week. The war shouldn't affect the package getting here except slightly (they are a little more careful at checking the packages). I'll stick it in as soon as I get it. Unfortunately I don't have cable/satellite so I can't help ya there. (Might use a friends satellite connection for testing) I'm preparing my computer for when I move back to the states but I plan on testing it here before I leave. -

Just bought an AIW 9700 Pro. Got tired of my Hauppauge WinTV Theatre, the chipset is like 4-5yrs old! 8) Can't wait to stick the plain ol' 9700 Pro in my drawer to gather dust. -
What's the matter with getting a PCI card? Heck grab a cheapo Promise DMA/66 from Best Buy.

Was looking into implementing a RAID server over here but I went with USB drives over RAID seeing as how USB HD's are more compatible and versatile than hardware RAID. I'm in a situation where I could leave at almost any point in time and I'd like to take my data with me. I just finished copying all of my USB/Firewire 120GB External Enclosures to 180GB External Enclosures. Currently it's 1HD 200GB Game Images. (FULL) 1HD for Backup of Game Images 1HD 120GB for Game Images (Half full) 1HD for Backup of 120GB 1HD 200GB Work Images (3/4 FULL) 1HD 200GB Backup Work Images 1HD 200GB Travel USB (Has all of my data) (70gb free) 1HD 200GB Backup Travel Still need to go back through my CD's and verify that I have all of them imaged. I'm guessing I probably need to backup 30-40 more CD's. As you can see I still need to buy more enclosures + 200GBHD's for my Data and I'm also looking into buying more 200GB drives for my DVD's.

start/run regsvr32 x:\winnt\apppatch\slayerui.dll Where x= drive letter where WINNT directory is located. Search the forums for more information.

I look at HD's as Data Storage. Performance comes secondary to that. If I were to worry about the fastest possible disk speed then I would only use those disks for an OS drive.....still occasionaly I get lazy and store some important info on my OS drive's instead of my backup USB drives so even then if I went with a crap 1yr warranty drive there is a greater chance that I would lost my data. Will the warranty restore my data? NO! After looking at all of my computer parts and comparing my hardware to my software my software is faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar more valuable to me and for good reason. All of the data that I have started collecting since 1990 is backed up and I am starting to scan my personal hardcopy info: Taxes, other financial, etc etc onto my backup drives. Data comes first. This post is appreciated but most computer noob's just look at performance and do not take the lifetime of the product that they will use into consideration....as long as it's something that doesn't store data or that will corrupt data in any way then that is fine with me...but as soon as it does I will not even consider it.

Probably a laptop or home machine being worked on.

Looking for Software-based hardware info utility
DosFreak replied to PinkPanther's topic in Hardware
You want AIDA32. It's free. It's updated frequently. It can perform Network audits and export them to tons of formats: SMS, txt, cvs, SQL. Check it out. Also it's not as bloated as Sandra but doesn't offer much in ways of benchmarking.....yet. -
Thanks for sticking this in the right forum instead of spamming multiple forums like some people.

XP PE is "better".
-
Haven't used those 2 programs but you might try Daemon Tools (free) or Alcohol 120% (Shareware) and see if those products work for you.

Since Phillip is the only one that updates the compatibility database it takes him quite some time to update it. Can't give ya any figures but I'm sure he'll see this thread and reply. From my NT Game Compatibility List: Magic Carpet 2 Windows XP Works in XP without NOLFB depending on video card. With my GF3/GF4 VESA would not work. With my ATI it does. No diff with/without NOLFB. If VESA does not work try NOLFB.If still doesn't work then try Connectix Virtual PC. Windows 2000 1. Copy CD to NETHERW directory. 2. Setup game. 3. Run mouse2kv 640 480 8 8 netherw.exe If you do not then you will be unable to use the mouse in the game menus. 4. Run NOLFB. If you do not then you will be unable to use higher resolutions in the game. 5. Play the game! Use Connectix Virtual PC if these instructions do not work for you. -
I've heard of some people having problems with Battlezone 2 installs. Mine installs fine without any tweaking. Have you tried using the Application Compatibility Layers first? (Creating a shortcut to the installer, doing a properties on it and choosing Windows 95). Also search this forum for Battlezone 2.

Well if your studying for MCSE, performing network testing at home for work, developing applications for server software, familiarizing yourself with the software. These are all valid reasons for why someone would want to "game" in a server OS. Why reboot to a Workstation OS when you don't have to? I would say depending on how you use your computer converting a Server OS for Workstation Gaming would in some ways be just as easy to get your Workstation OS into a gaming state. We all have different requirements for how we use our computers.

Power down hdd using Windows 2000 Server?
DosFreak replied to radx's topic in Everything New Technology
IIRC, it depends on if the mobo supports APM/ACPI. Does it? -
There goes cheap quality networking devices. The Netgear FA310TX is one of the most prominent NIC cards in computers that I have seen and is definetly a very good piece of hardware. Sigh. Everything is getting gobbled up. Good thing I have lots of $$$.

Reduce Acceleration in screen properties. Should run fine then.
