Guys, spot to download ALL Ms Windows XP hotfixes: Where?
DosFreak replied to DS3Circuit's topic in Everything New Technology
You'll need 2K/2003 Server. The client is built into 2000SP3 and XP but it will only download updates as needed from M$. If you want to download ALL updates at once then you'll need to install the Server portion. You may be able to install IIS, and hax0r .MSI requirements to remove the server requirement but I haven't tried it. I'm using SUS at work too along with SMS and UpdateExpert. I'd recommend UpdateExpert for home users. Some people say it's expensive but that's with tons of licenses. Will have to look but UpdateExpert should be pretty cheap for a home user. -
Why install DX9? Might as well stick with DX7....

Screen Adjustments for Nvidia based cards
DosFreak replied to Tomay's topic in Customization & Tweaking
DVI is the interface for LCD's. It's the white port on the back with a buncha holes. Leaves the analog conversion to the monitor instead of conversion in the card...allowing for much greater IQ. -
Well I'm not aware of any specific issues with that mobo but your video card is EXTREMELY inferior to the rest of the hardware. It's been awhile since I've used one of those cards...2+ years? So I'd guess that 800X600 with the settings maxed would run well with MOH:AA and Red Faction. The freezing problems might be a temperature issue, insufficient cooling on the processor....

Win2k Clients, Win2k Server, Roaming Profiles, SLOW LOGIN!!!
DosFreak replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Networking
Try a sniffer. Should have been the first suggestion really. -
Quote: You are getting confused with the Live update updates and the Intelligent updaters. We use NAV Corporate and our signatures are updated on a daily basis at midday without fail. My local server goes off to get the updates daily at midday and then distributes them around the network over the next ten minutes - these are daily without fail. That was the reason behind my original statement in the ongoing thread - as they are updated daily there seemed little point telling people this. You don't test them before push? You just trust that the Symantec DEFS are safe? :x

Magic Carpet 2 (game from the ice age), runs, but barely...
DosFreak replied to Mystiq's topic in Games
Cannot say without knowing the error in Win 98. Last time I played it was back in '96?? when it first came out and I played it in pure DOS of course because '95 was a big pile of ...errr something. NOLFB simply removes access to the Linear Frame Buffer for VESA programs that try to access it. (Which most later VESA programs do) The LFB provides faster VESA and also more VESA modes...unfortunately NT4/2k/XP seem to not be able to provide full access to the LFB which causes most VESA programs that try to use it to crap out or have messed up displays. NOLFB removes access to it so that the program uses NON LFB modes which while slower work fine in most cases. Glad to hear it worked for ya, Magic Carpet 2 is an awesome game that definetly deserved a sequel. -
Hmm, don't have the game but remember seeing some stuff @ vogons.zetafleet.com Perform a search of the forums there.

Go http://vogons.zetafleet.com Check out my NT Game Compatibility List in Deep Thought. Look at the Magic Carpet 2 Entry Also reference Deep Though for the utilities that you will need to run the game, -
I don't have the game so I cannot help you except for these guidelines: If you bought it then return it. If you Warezed it then delete it. If it's produced by EA then STAY AWAY FROM IT! Obviously Gearbox didn't care about it, and EA doesn't so why should you?

which is best to run... 16 or 32 bit color?
DosFreak replied to doniej's topic in Everything New Technology
As was stated in the other posts it depends on the "flashiness" aka "extra junk" or "coolness"" of your desktop. Basic 2K or XP desktop with all of the extras removed you will not notice that much of a diff except for the icons. It's really more about personal taste than anything else. Some people are more picky than others. -
Fantasy General not launching in XP? or somethiing else...
DosFreak replied to DarkPoet's topic in Games
You cannot. VCPI is not supported under NT's NTVDM. To run VCPI under NT you'll need to use an emulator such as Vmware or preferabbly Connectic Virtual PC. I would mention Bochs but it isn't even close to the level of VPC or Vmware in terms of user friendliness, compatibility or features....but it is free. Oh, and of course DosBox doesn't support VCPI, DPMI, protected mode yet. -
Port 23 for telnet Port 25 for SMTP

IIRC, pstching the CD itself without performing the Admin install may do this but I am unsure.

Quote: I read the link here at NT regarding how to sliptreaming xp...when I attempt to slipstream xpsp1a I get interrgration errors here is the path I used. "G:\xpsp1a_en_x86.exe -s:G\CD" do I need to change anything? Perhaps the ":" between the "G" and the "\" right before the "CD"? "G:\xpsp1a_en_x86.exe -s:G:\CD"

Well the /S command is there. I checked it last night. Didn't get around to trying an integration tho.

Blood: Can't help much there. We've hashed and rehashed Blood over in the VOGONS forum. Heck, we've even gotten GliDOS to work with the Glide version of Blood (Not much point tho). As for SFX all I can really recommend is to update your sound card drivers (In hopes to decrease latency) Try the XP Sound emulation (Although crappy you MIGHT have better results 1 out of every 100 games ),, also try decreasing the sound quality and modify the buffers in the VDMSOUND.INI. (For help with the VDMSound Buffer configuration, post in the VDMSound forums at www.vogons.zetafleet.com ) Lemmings 2: I have "Oh No More Lemmings!". The floppy version. Your problem description isn't very helpful. Start a new thread on Lemmings 2 here and also post a VOGONS. I think I remember someone having this game there. Tyrian2k: Don't have this one either. I have the original Tyrian. I have to use Connectix VPC to play it under NT. I would say VDMSOUND buffers may help with this situation. Worms: You say you tried it in VPC and it still locks up. Odd, Very very odd. I used VPC v5.1 to test it...not sure if it doesn't work on older builds of VPC since I deleted my old results. As for it "just working" it did when I tested it. I'll retest tonight to verify. CDROM Audio: Try SAPUCDEX at VOGONS. That may help. It's an MSCDEX replacement that gives DOS programs that have CD trouble what they need. MSCDEX doesn't really cater to DOS programs as it should whereas SAPU is designed to. Expanded Memory: You will likely get a very small amount of Expanded memory but will probably not be able to get the full amount. The problem is that NT wants to place EMM at a specific address range and we cannot change it in NT. Under DOS you can reassign it but any changes to the CONFIG.NT in NT seem to not matter. As for telling you exactly what hardware is eating what. Just load up MSD from a DOS disk and start looking at memory ranges, then start disabling HD, Sound,USB, remove PCI cards....oh and check the EMM thread over at VOGONS. Hope this helps....

List the games. They likely work fine under XP or will with tweaking.

Fantasy General not launching in XP? or somethiing else...
DosFreak replied to DarkPoet's topic in Games
DosBox doesn't support protected mode games which Fantasy General is. What's the error that you receive upon running it uunder XP without Dosbox? -
The slipstream guide has not been tested with SP1A or SP1B....nor do I intend to test them for quite some time...unless I get really really bored. It's possible that the extraction commands have changed.... Try doing a xpsp1a_en_x86.exe /?
