Win2k Clients, Win2k Server, Roaming Profiles, SLOW LOGIN!!!
DosFreak replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Networking
Check the size of the profiles. Roaming profiles can be fast.....if the profile is small. If not then you will experience the behavior that you currently are. Also verify that the NICS settings on the client/server are configured correctly and that your not exceeding the ether length specs. -
which is best to run... 16 or 32 bit color?
DosFreak replied to doniej's topic in Everything New Technology
Well the diff between 24bit and 32 bit is you get the extra transparency in 32bit over 24bit. Which for desktop usage you don't really need 32bit unless your using a proggy that uses transparency. As for 16, 24bit it depends on if the graphics that you are displaying need 16bit or 24bit color. Mostly you'll only ever need 16bit at the desktop unless your running a flashy desktop with tons of colors and transparencies which means 32bit. -
Quote: the splash comes up my cd drive wirrs then nothing happens. The previous poster was correct. The problem you posted is a typical Copy Protection issue that game companies seem not to care about. Daemon Tools and/or a CD crack will help ya....of course I can't really recommend anything to help you enjoy the game because the game really isn't that great.

IIRC, the 99% error in games is a bug in Installshield. I think it can be fixed by replacing the setup.exe with another setup.exe but It's been about forever and a half since I've encountered this problem and it's happened only once. (I have over 300+ Windows games that I've installer over and over and the 99% has only happened once.) You might try searching the forums. I believe this has been hashed over before.

Depends on what you like to do. I had a hard time forcing myself to play Morrowind. After organizing and prioritizing all 500+ of my PC games to try to figure out which one I wanted to play I finally got tired of it and said "I'M GOING TO PLAY MORROWIND!". So I did. Currently I am a Rouge, Female, Breton. Since I cannot be in a party or anything I'm going to be a Jack of all trades kind of character. I chose the Breton for their affinity to Magic and their resistance to it. Also chose it because the default female faces were the most beautiful. Haven't really gotten into the MODS for morrowind because I like to play games as they are but looking at Morrowind...for full enjoyment it looks like I'll have to use the MODS. Luckily it seems that the save games are fully compatible with the removal/additions of MODS so I'm set.

Do you need the 3 displays? That's the only reason for getting it.

Quote: Hi, I'm trying to run Tie Fighter Collector's CD-ROM in win2k pro Install goes just fine (apart from having no compatible soundcard) then trying to start the game tie.exe gives this error:" VESA BIOS not detected Hires mode may not be available" Then it asks about runnig UNIBVE to simulate VESA bu that doesn't work and then it just quits to windows desktop. Any ideas? Computer specs: AMD XP 2400+ 512MB PNY Verto geforce4 ti4200 (TIE fighter max install) - rackham Try running a full-screen NTVDM prompt before running the game. Access to VESA modes is not available unless the NTVDM prompt is full-screen. Seeing the GF4 in your sig, I'll have to warn ya the GF4's seems to have trouble accessing VESA modes under NT as compared to it's lower GF3 brethen and it's ATI competitors.

I'm in the SMS beta. SMS 2.0 SP5 and SMS 2003. What adamvjackson is true. It also helps if you work for a big corporation. They are looking for people who work in those environments and that can provide results.

Win2k 2000 Server; trouble with access by Terminal Client
DosFreak replied to Preacher's topic in Networking
TS does not interact with the desktop and was not designed to do so. You need programs such as SMS,Dameware,VNC to do what your asking. -
Quote: Instead of comparing Opera to Mozilla, you should try comparing Opera to Phoenix. I think you will find Phoenix to be a much better product than Phoenix... and it's based on the gecko engine too: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/phoenix/phoenix-release-notes.html (it's a lot faster and has more features than Mozilla too) Cheers! 8) Phoenix must be good if it's better than itself!

Have you tried Dosbox? http://dosbox.zophar.net/ Since it was released in 1995 it could be a DPMI game which currently do no work under Dosbox. As far as the memory, are you sure that you do not mean expanded instead of extended? There is a known problem with NT operating systems and system hardware that eats up the memory ranges needed by NT for EMS.

From my NT Game Compatibility List: ME: Heavy Gear 2 Download the Windows 2000 Application Compatibility toolkit from here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/compatibility/ Use QfixApp on Heavy Gear 2.exe and click "Win95VersionLie.dll" Click the "Advanced" tab. Then click "Create attributes file". Then go to the AppPatch folder in the Windows folder and click on Heavy Gear 2.reg Now all you have to do is run the game like normal from the Shortcut! Reinstall this .reg if you reinstall windows!

Server Event viewer interpretation (Logon/Logoff)
DosFreak replied to rwilliams3's topic in Everything New Technology
Extra entries? These are the times that the user logged on/logged off. I'm assuming that the user locked/unlocked their workstation and logged back on again. The times sound about right. For proper auditing you NEED these times logged. -

WHERE Windows XP store the autom. downloaded patches?
DosFreak replied to mpower's topic in Everything New Technology
The free way is to use Windows Catalog (Terrible interface....but it's free). I use UpdateExpert which is costly but worth it. -

Quote: Quote: Hmmm... I wonder what you guys think about this http://www.pclinuxonline.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=4233 I'm not even sure how this rates as news worthy, since people have been doing this forever. I have fixed NT installations with NT CDs, and I have done likewise Linux systems using Linux CDs. If I need to fix a Gentoo install, I can just boot with the CD and mount any partition I would like, then edit any of the files on that drive, setup an SSH server to move files off, or just FTP out anything of importance. I can even chroot into the environment installed on the HD and change the root password and anything else I want to. So, if you want flaws, there's some major ones right there belonging to Linux. Yeah, I've seen TONS of problems with people encrypting their files and then losing the keys. Imagine if they lost access to the actual filesystem by default, this is why MS doesn't do it by default. Too much trouble for not much benefit.

Mr. Mitnick is BACK... possibly working in security
DosFreak replied to adamvjackson's topic in Security
"He's probly just above script kiddie level now. ROFLMAO!" Darn, removed that because I thought it was a cheap shot...now that I think about it I should have left it in! DOH! Yep, the people aspect of Computer Security is the weakest link. Perhaps the best role for Mitnick would be an Amabassador as it were for some company. Explaining Computer Security to the "common man". That's where I'd stick him if I had to hire him. Oh well, if any company does do this I feel sorry for the Network Admins that will have to put up with him. I can imagine his first day: Prank Caller: "Look at me! I am teh Mitnick! P43@R M3!" Sys Admin: Locks out Mitnick. Calls Boss. Real Mitnick: "Hey, Could you guys unlock me?" Sys Admin: "Talk to your Supervisor, bud. (Snickers offline)" Real Mitnick: "It wasn't me! HONEST!" -

Mr. Mitnick is BACK... possibly working in security
DosFreak replied to adamvjackson's topic in Security
bleh. Keep him away!!! WAY too much media hype and I fail to say how he'll be able to offer anything that anyone who's been in this field for the last 8 years has already offered. Yes, taking a step back from computers does allow you time to think and will give you alot of theory but there is such a thing as being away too long. I think he'd be better off staying away from security since he's already shown that he can't keep things on the down low. He's already shown that he still has the addiction. (Using friends/relatives/GF to use the Internet for him as an intermediary). He's been doing this stuff since he was a pre-teen. He WILL do it again if he does not have supervision. The Computer Security Fields should be left to trustworthy individuals...Mitnick is no longer such a person. Any company who hires this guy will be more likely to use him as a marketing ploy than for his Security skills of which I am sure are severly lacking nowadays. Yes, Yes not much has changed as far as the basics of Security in the last 8 years but Computer Security encompasses all things from Infrastructure, Server, Desktop, Users.....all require intimate knowledge which he has not had for the past 8 years. -
Wheel oF Time will not run on Windows 2000 using APCOMPAT
DosFreak replied to wacle's topic in Everything New Technology
Hmmm, Demo runs fine under Windows 2000. Considering that it uses the Unreal engine then Compatibility mode is not necessary. Since as far as I know there are no compatibility problems with the Unreal engine and NT os's. Exactly what error do you get with the game without running in compatibility mode? It's likely a corrupt install, The game is not updated, your drivers not installed, or a misconfigured config in the game. -
err..How about not. Please,Just use the Nvidia drivers. Usually the "tweaked" versions do not actually fix anything but just modify the default settings. If you needed these settings changed in the first place then you could easily find 'em on the net and about 99.99999% of the time they are not needed.
