Quote: Quote: When using the best OS available I feel it is only natural to use the best file system too - NTFS. FAT & FAT32 should be condemed to the same fate as the OS's that spawned them - as mats for your coffee mugs. Is there any reason to use FAT any more? Apart from for floppy disks - and, lets face it, when was the last time you absolutely had to use a floppy?! ALOT. It's much easier and faster to do Bios flashes from a floppy. Much easier to transfer smaller filers. Much cheaper too.

USB is a serial Bus....ummm...as per the Acronym. -
Not quite sure what you mean about the seperate forum. Could you explain further? Also FAQ's are good. I love FAQs. Get the FAQ's. That's the FAQ Jack! Ummm...sorry.

What do you expect them to do? Learn it? Sorry but that is simply not possible in most cases. Those who do not NEED the information have jobs to do and simply do not have the time. I would suggest sitting down and explaining the basics. If you do not live with them the I would setup everything so that you can enter remotely and troubleshoot for them. This allows you the time to access the system freely and secure it as you see fit. Simply replacing their 9x system with an NT OS is a BIG leap in security in and of itself...from there you should be able to secure the rest quite easily yourself.

Futuristic 3D Desktops of tomorrow, here today...
DosFreak replied to Jedi Master's topic in Software
Well, just messed around with the Desktop Manager powertoy. Removed the XP requirement and installed it on 2000. The option to enable Desktop Manager appears in the Taskbar but the program will not enable. Took a look at the dependencies and tried switching the .dll's with the XP versions but once progs start getting into the ADVAPI,Kernel32 realm your outta luck. -

Gonna download that 3DNA prog and give it a look tommorow. Always interested in an improvement but I really don't see how what I do can be improved by this prog. Just by reading and looking at the pics, the Windows Start Bar and the desktop devoted to one pic seems the easiest non distracting most efficient desktop for me and my users. Mabye I'll reconsider my blank desktop habits. NOOO!! Human......nature....must....fight....it..... -
The only difference from 1.5 to 2.6 is documentation and 2.6 is a consolidated 2k/XP install. Oh, also qfixapp.exe is missing from the start menu in 2.6 for some odd reason. Also SP's are all of the hotfixes that are available on the MS site bundled and tested with each other (more throroughly than the single hotfixes) along with Application Compatibility updates and some drivers.

An SQL like database for a filesystem would seem like waaayy too much for desktop systems. The amount of processing time required would far outweigh any benefits I would think especially considering that it would mostly be used for backwards compatibility...so little benefit would be seen to common users who would wish to keep compatibility across multiple OS'S. I see this as something that would be highly useful in a workplace environment but for home use it would be more trouble than it's worth. In other words...I feel sorry for those with 500mhz and below systems!

The only situation where I would use NTFS compression would be on archived and/or rarely used data or situations where highly compressible data is needed to be compressed for more space on a server. Any other usage of NTFS compression (except under closely monitored situations where you KNEW that it would improve performance) just seems like a reduction of performance and overall efficiency. Didn't read the entire articles was just going by what you posted. Quote: Did Gates actually say that? Do you have a link? Wasn't doubting ya. Just wanted a link!

Sorry but "switching desktop" Ala' *nix or Windows XP is the future. Most of the users I have seen actually like to use their desktop space for their pictures, instead of using it for icons. I like my desktop Black with no pictures (distracting). CLI,Quicklaunch buttons, shortcut keys, and of course the Start button. I don't use desktop switching much since I have dual-monitors and use 2000 at work mostly but on my *nix machines I love to switch desktop. The interface shown above just seems like a waste of screen real estate and annoying. What I've been doing for awhile is displaying computer statics on the desktop which is alot more interesting to me. Devoting an entire desktop to access to the system just seems uneeded and wasteful on resources. I've noticed that M$ seems to be devoting more into glossy interface design than functional interfaces. If they wish to keep their customers they NEED to do as *nix does. Multiple interfaces with some as "pretty" as you want them but other interfaces that are streamlined and functional for REAL users. (Those who use their computers more than the ones who use it 1 or 2 a week) -
Also for UT the most efficient video API's are: OGL D3D Glide Software So try OGL but make sure you have the latest ATI drivers loaded.

Quote: And, for sure, there is no use of compressing the Volume or folder containing uncompressible data, such as JPG images, ZIP files, etc... Ideal data for the compression are text and office documents, bitmap images and other files consisting of lots of repeating characters. Wrong. .Jpeg's??? Umm, there's still a lot of compression to be done here. .Zip's? One of the least effective compression format's around. NTFS compression does alot of good on .zip's. It's very few situations that NTFS compression actually increases the size...one that I don't see very often. Try it out for yourselves. NTFS compression is effective almost all the time. Quote: Sure, Mr. Gates called it a "cesspool" recently... but I figure he's out to sell their next idea of databased filesystems, which is really drip-down from the As/400 & System390 IBM mainframe & midrange DB/2 databased filesystem world anyhow... but one using SQL Server type databasing, this is the rumor I heard anyhow! Did Gates actually say that? Do you have a link? Besides, What does Gates know about computers these days? Not much if you ask me....

Yup, that's where I am headed after 2K. Wintendo for gaming and *nix for everything else (and gaming when game is compiled for *nix.) Oh and NT4/2K/XP runs fine on my box...NT4 is the least trouble but is less supported and compatible, 2K is better than NT4/XP and XP just pissed me off to no end (mostly due to M$ laziness than anything else).

Why does my printer not work the same on XP as with NT?
DosFreak replied to LongDistancePaddler's topic in Hardware
Drivers. Drivers are everything to a printer. Look for alternate versions of drivers for that printer or modify the driver settings. -

Depends, If you want the best V2 glide emulator then it's: OpenGlide. If ya need V3 then it's: EVoodoo.

Use the Realmagic Hollywood+ drivers from www.sigmadesigns.com

It should work just fine without any modifications. Are you sure your copy is good?

Just use Mozilla and only use IE when you need to. (Sites that are IE specific such as M$ sites). I recently "switched" heh (We need an Mozilla to IE switch commercial)..from IE to Mozilla about 2 months ago (Kept tabs on Mozilla but it wasn't really "there" yet for me) and haven't looked back since. (Well except for the IE specific sites.) Now that I am using St. Bernard's UpdateExpert I don't have to worry about using WindowsUpdate...so about the only time I need IE is if I encounter a Mozilla bug (very rare) or if I'm browsing the M$ KB.
