Also as far as I know the Athlon MP mobo's do not have dual channel DDR. The Asus A7N8X I bought 2 days ago does....and I just heard that GB doesn't have dual channel DDR 333 but dual channel DDR 266! hahahahahah! (Just heard it yesterday so don't bash me if I'm wrong .)

Let me tell you what I am doing: You see I'm currently dividing up my computer into the functions that fit best, instead of fitting file/server, video, work, gaming into one computer. I am finally getting around to building my file server and then have a dedicated gaming computer. The gaming computer will have an Athlon XP 2800+, Asus N78X Nforce mobo, Radeon 9700, 1GB of Ram, DVD, 1gb NIC, and probably 1-2 HD's. The server will be my Abit VP6 Dual P3-1ghz@1105mhz (until I decided on what I want to replace it with), GF4 TI4600, 1GB RAM, 2x 48x CDRs, 1gb NIC and all of my HD's in a RAID-5 Array. (Hopelly SATA 120GB disks) I will also be using my server as an actual server. Loading applications and such straight off the server such as work files so that I will not lose any work by saving it on my gaming computer...so basically my gaming computer will be pretty much straight gaming. You say that you are thinking about getting an Athlon MP...but for what? Are you EXACTLY aware of what SMP can and can not do for you? For the P4: Are you aware of what Hyperthreading can and can not do for you? I would say that if you are not going to use these functions then you should not buy them because there is really no point in buying them if you not going to use them. Here's a good article from Ace's on hyperthreading: http://www.aceshardware.com/read.jsp?id=50000319 If your looking at a P4 then I suggest you study the price/performance ration between a P4/AMD and decide if it's worth it to you. Looking at the amount of computers you have I would think that it would not be worth it but I am not aware of how often you upgrade. Basically if you upgrade alot then it's Athlon If you don't then it's P4.

Try removing the Live? (no exclamation mark ) and see how your system performs then.

Quote: dont know about via/amd but intel/intel has been 100% acpi since the i440 Just because the mobo is doesn't mean the hardware is. For FULL ACPI compliance ALL hardware must be ACPI compatible.

Nope. I test the products. I ask around. I NEVER talk to sales people. I then send my quotes to my boss. Works pretty effectively over here on a network of 500+ local users for the last 4 years running NAV CE.

Quote: Ok, i agree. But the fact remains; how can a good/bad program get any better/worse in different environments? You speak of domain, i speak of quality. Personally, if i were an administrator, i'd probably have a word with a salesman of every GOOD program to see whether they do have such a version in the first place and then make up my mind. But Norton Corporate does have the same engine installed and cannot be better than the one tested here in Win98sSE environment. Same gos for the rest of the programs of course. And if you really wanna talk for domain versions, F-Secure, which is #1 if you see the results of the test, has one HELL of a domain version Thanks again for your interest. Talk to a salesman? LOL! I'd MUCH rather talk to other System Admins on their AV solution than a salesman. I'm gonna laugh about this one all day.....

Read the fix list. If you don't need the fixes then don't install it....but I recommend that you do since it fixes several HUGE security flaws that MS doesn't even mention in the fix list. THANKS MS! ;(

Quote: You need three things to kill people. You need a weapon, you need the skill, and you need the will to kill. Video games provide two out of the three. 1. www.dictionary.com "n 1: weaponry used in fighting or hunting; "he was licensed to carry a weapon" [syn: arm, weapon system] 2: a means of persuading or arguing; "he used all his conversational weapons" [syn: artillery]" Therefore ANY device used to fight or hunt. Be it a sword or a pencil. ANYTHING can and most likely has been used as a weapon. 2. "Skill" You do not NEED skill to kill. Skill in killing is just like having a skill at writing. You do not need to be skilled to write. You can still write. Therefore you can still kill without skill. It happens every day. 3. "Will to Kill". Video games do not provide "will". "Will" comes from the mind. Unless there is some mind control subliminal messaging going on here (which has never been proven sufficiently). Then any "will to kill" is developed by the person who kill's. Yawn. Stop browsing crappy websites.

WINDOWS XP PCs running on Windows NT 4.0 server
DosFreak replied to Jim.Fellows's topic in Everything New Technology
IIRC, there may be a bug with read/write speed to NT4 Server's. I migght be thinking of something else tho. Other than that everything's fine! -
heh. Just firewall it. All major corporations have static. Dynamic IP's do not really make you more secure since it's just a simple matter of an ip scanner to find your IP again.... FreeBSD it.
-
Nah, you should be fine. Read up on MAC. Shouldn't make any difference whatsoever (as far as network communication). What are you trying to do? Bypass a MAC ban?
-
You do know that Doom 3 will not have multiplayer? Well it will but...not really. Nothing worth mentioning.

ookkkaay..... Look in your driver properties settings for your NIC. Look for "Network Address"

Win2k hardware compression during backup
DosFreak replied to VirusP's topic in Everything New Technology
Did you try Backup Exc v8.6? I've had problems with the stripped-down backup exec included in NT OS'S (NTBACKUP) and hardware compression. Using the REAL Backup Exec fixed it for me every time. I'd say it's possibly a hardware problem. I'm not familiar with that Tape Hardware so it possibly doesn't support hardware compression...I seriously doubt that tho. -
Actually ID is calling Doom 3 a remake of Doom 1...so it's really Doom 1. It's easier just to refer to it as Doom 3..less confusion that way.

According to Willits himself and I quote "Doom 3 will use "the same basic navigational path system (created by van Waveren) as Q3." Revolutionary AI is low on the priority list for JC because "monster's don't need it". Also there will be no destructibe terrain. (except for monster's breaking through walls.) So don't expect fights such as the ones between yourself and AI opponents in HL. Really ALL Doom 3 is gonna be is Doom 1 with shadows making it more scary, higher graphics quality, mabye half a dozen monsters in one room at once, and a much slower gameplay pace. That's it. Don't expect any more 'cause it's not gonna be there. Just like UT2K3 your gonna love what other game companies do with the engine.

The NTCompatible page is easier on the eyes and encourages me to actually read the frontpage whereas at LinuxCompatible I scroll down looking for specific things that I actually want to read.... Now if we had a profiling system where in the options we could choose what we want to see at each visit automagically then this would be fine but as of now comparing both websites I would say that NTCompatible frontpage encourages me to read it more than the LinuxCompatible frontpage. I dunno mabye I'm crazy. :x

Desktop icons corrupted after SPĀ·3 Win2Kpro
DosFreak replied to outsider's topic in Everything New Technology
Delete the "shelliconcache" file out of your "WINNT" folder. Should fix your desktop prob. -
Yup, basically it links the maps together, fixes the menu and binds some keys. Multiplayer works in the leak so they'll probly add that in another patch soon.... There's also plans to start building maps since the map/sound editor is included with the leak. This means that we should have TONS of mods available when Doom 3 is released since all the Moder's out there will have had lots of time to play with the code!

http://frenchfragfactory.net/news.shtml?pwrfilter=Doom3 Quote: Xian> ATI leaked it oh we will. We are hoping our rep gets fired. John sent them a flame mail yesterday basically saying "This has hurt our relationship" haha, no not really they sent us a development laptop with a full build of Unreal Warfare on it yep Well, we deleted it that's a whole can of worms we don't want to get into yeah, well, ATI has clearly violated our NDA we thought about that. but, no ATI is on our ****list righ tnow we are not dealing with them until further notice no, it's not public chiQ We know ATI leaked it. We watermark all releases Squiggle: ATI has a relaxed policy about pre-release software. Remeber, they gave us a laptop that had Unreal Warfare loaded on it 3 months ago They don't seem to care about strict enforcement of NDA's on a positive note, people seem to *REALLY LIKE* the leaked ***"

Hmmm, I'm unsure but it MIGHT work in Software mode under Vmware. I'll check tonight. I played it in Software and beat it when it first came out loong ago and then back in 98 I bought like a Gold edition or somesuch and it included D3D. D3D looks MUCH better...but the game is still playable and fun under software.
