What's with the err, can't place the color. Slighly yellowish color for the background? Looks kind of strange.

It's best to make your Office an administrative install off the network AND THEN MAKE SURE NO ONE HAS ANY OFFICE CD'S EXCEPT FOR A BURNED COPY OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE INSTALL! HEED MY WORDS! -

WinXP or Win2k pro:Which is better for a heavy gamer?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Software
Depends on the user. The most major benefit to go back is less "fighting" with the OS. Depending on how much you use your OS then XP may be too frustrating when trying to perform simple tasks that you may want to revert back to 2K. This is the way it is in my case. I do not have the time to document all of the reg fixes and such that would involve getting XP to a 2K like state. So I mostly use 2K. I've been forcing myself to use XP to see if I can like the changes but I do not....as soon as I start to say.."Well, I guess I can deal with this..." then XP pulls something out of it's nether regions to **** me off. XP offers "more" compatibility. (not enough to move from 2k, IMO). XP has more of a future. (2K support will end before XP but since they are pretty much the same OS then what goes for XP will also go for 2K). XP is cheaper. You have the crappy home edition, which even tho it is a crippled Pro it is still faaaarrr better than 9x overall and considerably better than ME. Probly another MS conspiracy. Releasing the craptacular ME before the release of XP so that the common user would think that XP was far superior to 98 whereas at least with 98 you have more compatibility with with software...... More development. More and more software companies are developing on 2K/XP boxes. In fact alot of games nowadays are performing worse and more buggier on 9x boxes simply because the devs do not perform as much testing on 9x as they do on NT boxes anymore. Even the supposed devs who keep the 9x'ers in my still dev on NT boxes. In any case. For most of the users out there XP should be their choice, but the power user or those who actually perform some work they should definetly give 2000 a try on their work machine and perform the same tasks between both OS's before making the choice. -
Noooooo, he mentioned IBM. NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! I've had 4 IBM HD's fail on me over a 2yr span and most failed within a 6 month period. 3 60g IBMs and 1 120gb IBM. All were properly cooled and barely warm to the touch.

Baldur's Gate works fine in NT4/2000/XP without any modifcations. What error message do you receive? Have you installed the latest video card drivers?
-
Which video card do you own? I've noticed that with Nvidia cards then VESA modes do not function as well under NT4/2K as well as they do under XP due to Microsoft enabling a bit more VESA access in XP. ATI cards seem to be able to access all VESA modes fine in NT4/2K/XP with only mouse cursor access being a problem in NT4/2K in DOS games. In the case of The Need For Speed if you have tried to run the game in a full screen NTVDM command prompt and you have executed TNFS.EXE and you just receive a blank screen and/or exit to the desktop then your only remedy is to use Connectix Viirtual PC (www.connectix.com) and play the game within that, play the game in real DOS, or play it in Windows XP. The game works fine for me in NT4/2K/XP with my Radeon 9700 pro but as I have mentioned before with my GF3/4 it only works in XP.

WinXP or Win2k pro:Which is better for a heavy gamer?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Software
Speed is the same (as far as gaming). As for the XP UI and general XP experience on the desktop I have always seen it as slower than 2K, IMO. Stability is as always dependent upon hardware. Since 2K and XP drivers are in almost all cases interchangeable then the hardware stability found by most users on 2K as opposed to XP or XP as opposed to 2K is mostly due to ignorance on the users part on driver/system setup. -
For heavy internet and games which is better WinXP/Win2k?

Stop posting in multiple forums pr-man. This is what the GENERAL and/or OTHER forums are for. If you cannot learn the difference then I'll just start deleting posts..... -
WinXP or Win2k pro:Which is better for a heavy gamer?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Software
;( XP wins slightly due to it having a few more Application Compatibility Fixes in it's .sdb than 2000 does. It also wins slightly in it's NTVDM Sound support for Doom/Build Engine games and the few hacked Vesa modes that are included within. That's it. Use the Search function to find more correct/incorrect information in the forum. -
Windows XP comes with drivers for this card already......
-
Yup, just checked my Temp and it's hanging around 53C. I've just been doing desktop stuff for the past couple of hours and my computer has been on for..heck...I dunno around 30hours without a reboot. It bumps up to around 56-57 under heavy load.

Your are getting the full capacity. The program mentioned is a program that loads onto your MBR before your OS boots that enables your computer to support larger HD capacities if your HD controller is very old. All DMA 100-133 cards support 120GB+. It's only dealing with contoller cards At or below DMA/66 that you may have trouble with HD's larger than that.
-
65! Whoah, With a decent heatsink and fan you should be at the most getting in the mid 50's. What's your room temp like? Mine hangs around the lower 50's and my room temp is like mid 70's. Athlon XP 2000+ This is with an Alpha PAL heatsink/fan.

Have you updated the game?
-
No. Do not use Vmware/VPC if you want Good sound. Windows sound will work fine due to Vmware/VPC emulation but almost ALL Dos games will sound like crap. Especially MIDI.
-
There is no 16bit DMA in the SoundBlaster emulated in XP's NTVDM. It's recommended that you still use VDMSound will all updates applied in NT4/2K/XP for the best sound experience (well in NT anyway). It's HIGHLY recommended that you have an old DOS machine around if you want to play these games right.

Odd, The full versions of MOHAA installs fine on NT4. Haven't tried the demo yet....
