heh. We have to hack WMP8 out of XP so that we can use it in 2000. M$ gets angry and comments that WMP8 on 2000 does not have all the features that it does in XP because in XP it is more "integrated". Lies. Now WMP9 can be installed on 9x,2000,XP for beta testing. They'd better drop 9x/2000 support, otherwise I'll be wanting to know how WMP8 can only work on XP while WMP9 can work on 9x,2000,XP. and people wonder why M$ makes us angry. Who wants to bet that they'll remove 9x,2000 support after the beta? I do!

Yep, it truly is amazing. But not as amazing as it should be: I should be able to connect a device up to my computer and connect wireless to a satellite in the sky from anywhere in the world for a very cheap price. BT shouldn't have a stranglehold on the Tele market and increase broadband support in more areas. No one should be using Modem's anymore. There should be Cable/Jacks in every hotel/Dorm/everywhere. Internet companies need to monitor their bandwidth and improve it to match. ISP's should not restrict the amount of download's. If it's UNLIMITED then it's UNLIMITED if it's not then state as such. etc etc etc We are still much better off than we were tho!

Jdulmage Quote: Plus, what the hell are you Shrink, you obviously have no computer knowledge and/or a brain. Your overclocking an already fast computer, how stupid can you get, it's just like me going out and buying one of those gigahertz chips and overclocking it. 450 Mhz Pentium 3 at 504 Mhz is so stupid, one, your risking the computer's life span, and two, it's fast already, why bother hehe

Muahahah. I love reading that thread. Every time I get bored on the 'net I go back and re-read. The only bad thing about it is that I'm not an outright funny poster so my posts are funny in a not so obvious way. I want to be an obviously funny poster dangit!

ehhh, before the net we didn't have 12yr old script kiddies surfin' their AOL accounts reading webpages on how to do this stuff. We had 12yr old wardialer's who surfed BBS's to figure out how to do it. Networks were much less vulnerable to attack because there was much less of a wide-open network to attack.

That SP1 build is very old. IIRC, they are in the 107x build now.

DOS installs fine on any X86 computer and with FreeDOS it supports all of the memory in your computer. (MS-DOS only supports 64MB).

Pi was a frickin' freaky movie man. Weeeiiirrdd but good in a small film kinda way.

I've seen the 150m spec plastered all over creation but never any REAL benchmarks. I need comparisons between ATA & SATA dangit!

Add OS's that the App/Hardware/Game supports? Don't know if this should be user submitted. Too easy to make a mistake...but would definetly make things easier.
-
Where the heck are they at? heh. Has a user purge ever been done on the board? Just trying to pinpoint why they are so few posts but so many users.

Well, well, well. They are actually doing it. Sigh. I guess I'll start text-scanning every time I download anything now. (I'm already doing research for a game scanner that'll scan for specific prog languages, memory stubs, engine vers). Guess I'll add common DRM strings to my list. We should start up a Will not buy if it's DRM poll.

Hmmm, the BEST and surest method to completely remove an old OS is to reformat the drive. To do this simply instert your Windows 2000 CD and when it comes to the Partition setup screen simply delete all partitions and then make new one's. (Be sure that you have backed up all data and that you have downloaded all drivers and updates that you need.) If you do not wish to do that then it's likely that you are not viewing hidden files. Double-click My Computer Go to Tools\Folder Options Choose the View Tab Check "Show Hidden files and Folders" Uncheck all "Hide" checkboxes. You can now view all hidden files. Also the best way to search for space-hogging files is to use the Windows 2000 search but do not specify a filename. Simply search the entire drive. Then sort the filesize tab and delete those huge files.

Sweeettt.... Now I can stick my NT Compatibility list in my Sig! WOOT! :wtf:

?? Default Win2k Pro install is around 600+mb Default 2KSrv/AS is about 50m+ over that. IIRC, Swap file is 1.5* your memory. So calculate that in too.

Yes, it works fine because it uses OGL.

Configure Xp to smooth on a 450..
DosFreak replied to Mr-Hipshot's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Then don't bother tweaking it until you get the memory. You'll just have to tweak it again to remove the memory tweaks you performed before you stuck the memory again. IIRC, XP take's up around 80-90+mb default install with nothing else loaded. You can get that a couple of megabytes lower...mabye in the 60m area but any lower is not possibile....unless you really want to start hacking away. (not recommended) 2K/XP can run on lower MHZ processors but you need to throw ALOT of ram at 'em. I recommend 192MB at LEAST for optimal MINIMUM 2K/XP use. 256 is recommended for light gaming, work. 384 for more common gaming, work....but games are starting to require more. 512 is the recommended amount for the heavy PC professional/Video/Gamer. -
Confidence is KEY for success in the computer world but Stuborness and Arrogance is NOT. I've seen many people in this field that had all three and went on to success....somehow... but the truly great people in this field have just the one...Confidence. 'Fear is the mind-killer.' You cannot be meek when it comes to working on computer tech but you must also recognize when you are wrong...unfortunately people for some reason do not like to think that they can possible be wrong for some odd reason even tho it's a fact that no being on Earth has been nor ever will be perfect. Let's see..... oh here's a good one: I set up Sniffer in Promiscuous mode on the external side of our network, emailed the rest of the shop that Sniffer was going and told 'em to take a look if I wanted. Came in the next day to find that Sniffer was shut down. The reason? Earlier that day one of the Tech's desktop computer was acting slow. Mouse moved slowly, applications took forever to load, network performance was terrible. He IMMEDIATELY blamed it on the Sniffer without even looking at his desktop config. Looking at his config he had TONS of memory hoggin' apps, an ancient Windows NT install, cluttered registery, corrupted filesystem, fragmented partitions...basically everything. We had to sit down and explain the basics of Sniffer to him. ;(

Why rename to .txt? The search feature in 2k/xp can look in any file. Just associate .log with notepad for easy editing.

Yep, Boot kicked...well you know the word. Mabye it was the name change that did 'em in? I like to read magazines because I do not have the time to read articles in full on the internet. My only internet access is at work and I spent all of my time researching work related things which usually have nothing to do with small-time computer stuff but mainly Infrastructure/Server technology. I also find the Internet reviews most of terrible quality. This is why I still buy magazines off the shelf but do not buy subscriptions.

oh...I didn't even mention the power requirements of the 9700. Sorry but a card that cannot comply with the AGP spec SHOULD NOT BE BOUGHT. There are reason's why spec's are made...they are not made to be broken and bad things happen when they are. Ah, V5 series anyone? Required extra power AND it did not fit work on the i8xx series of Intel boards due to the spec. Tsk, Tsk ATI. Trying to come too far too fast and breaking rules along the way. No, I redraw my statement on buying the 9700 if I get board. I might pick it up at the store to check it out and then return it but this card is definetly not to be used.

Don't think I'll be buying it. I left for Class/Vacation March 3-May 4. Bought some parts for my Computer: GF4 Ti4600 Upgraded to PC2700 from 2400. Upgraded from 512MB to 1GB Bought a 333 mobo. Bought some wireless stuff. I was then asked if I wanted to go to another class. Left for this one on June 24th, and it will end on July 24th. So I really only had about a week to play around with this hardware before I left. Seeing as how I've been burned by ATI in the past and I see how they regard their older products still, and the fact that Nvidia pay's EXCELLENT attention to their OGL ICD and their Linux drivers. Also the fact that the NV30 will most likely be more programable than the 9700 all leads me to wait for the NV30.....unless I get really really really REALLY gey bored and spot the 9700 laying around..then I might play around wid it 'till the superior NV30 comes out. Who wants to place bet's that OGL v1.4 will be supported by Nvidia first and will work on all of their previous cards all the way back to the TNT1? I place $100 on the bet. ATI will probly get around to it a year after Nvidia does.

Hmmm, reading will not really help unlesss she wants technical comparison's between the two OS'S...which I HIGHLY doubt if she has been using 9x for 2years *shudder*. I recommend you plan a day to sit down with her and go through everything that she did on her 9x machine and perform the same operations on the 2k machine. That's the best way to do it. Considering that there may be other users on your network using this OS you may want to take the experiences that you had with this user and start a class for your company on their new OS. (If it was NT4-2K this would not be as necessary but still preferable but going from 9x to 2K you will need to teach your users)

Pointless? Not unless your using a .NET prog or programming .NET.....
