Really weird internet/LAN problem - Help needed
DosFreak replied to Dirty Harry's topic in Networking
Hmmm, Do you know of anyone else in your area with the same provider? Preferablly someone in the neighborhood.... You already checked your IP config's. You checked your router. You checked your computer. Gotta be either them or something in-between. Try using SamSpade to trace to your computer: http://www.samspade.org/ Then test your connectivity to the route-s in-between your IP and your ISP's. -
Q: Will dual processors improve my 733t Gaming $k177z? A: No. The improvement provided my dual processors in gaming is barely noticeable. In game engines that support dual processors (Q3 engine based games) dual processor's will only improve FPS at 1024X768 or below. For games that do not support dual processors you may think that since the OS supports dual processor then your game may in some magical way be improved. It won't. There is an overhead involved in using dual processors so you will see either a decrease or an equal performance with a single processor machine. In short: Dual Processors JUST for gaming is NOT a good idea.

1. If you have a Corp ver of Norton Antivirus at work you are able to use that version at home. It's in the License. I'll scrounge up the link if ya need it. 2. Mcafee (or any other virus scanner for that matter) does not modify the MBR unless a virus modifies the MBR. 3. IMO, Norton Antivirus Corp is the best Antivirus scanner that you can buy. 4. The RETAIL ver of both Norton AV and Mcafee are TERRIBLE compared to their Corpo counterparts. If you can not get the corp versions then I recommend that you download the freeware antivirus programs off of the 'net. 5. Mcafee is easier to find on "*****" sites. Simply because as far as I know their Corporate Login/Password is still working as it always has for the past 5 years running. Using this pass you can download ALL of their AV software (why you would want to I do not know). As far as I know their is no Norton AV Corp Pass/Logon that has been leaked ever. 6. If your in the military (or if not ) you can download ALL versions of Norton/Mcafee Antivirus at www.cert.mil This is where I get all my Norton Products since I am in the military.

Some sites you will never be able to ping. This is simply because they are blocking ICMP. I am not sure if this is true for NTCompatible's case but it's highley likely because I have never been able to ping their DNS or their IP. Blocking ICMP is a good idea for security. Makes the newbies think they cannot connect to a site. While connected to your ISP perform an IPCONFIG /ALL There should be Primary and Secondary DNS servers. Try changing Primary DNS the Secondary and making your Secondary the Primary.(If your using DHCP this is fine you can still assign the DNS yourself). Also contact your ISP and verify all settings with them. -
1. Insert XP CD. 2. Boot from it. 3. During XP install you can delete your partitions and make new ones. 4. Format the partitions using NTFS during install. * You can also keep the existing partitions and just format over them but I recommend deleting the old to get rid of the junk. * Quick formatting does not perform a FULL format. It just wipes the partition info from the MBR. A Full format wipes all information making it even harder to recover information. I recommend a FULL format for cleaning.

1. When first starting out on computers I would receive memory errors when trying to start a game or program. Errors stating that "You must have 580+k, 600+k, to start this program". So I would look at my HD space and say. Huh? I have 6,356,000 free out of 40,000,000 on my HD WTF!!!??? So I would delete some files and perform a defrag. Then I'd reboot my computer and immediately start up the game/application and it worked! It was some time later that I finally realized the difference between HD memory and Physical memory. 2. Dos 6.00 was finally released and I discovered this little program called DOUBLESPACE that would double my HD capacity! 8) 8) I immediately compressed my 40m HD on my 286-12mhz. It took all night long and I was impatiently waiting all night long. I woke up in the morning and I had TONS of free space! WHOOPPPEEEE!!! I immediately discovered that there were far less benefits than I thought there would be. 1. Slower HD access. Due to uncompression/recompression of files. 2. Higher fragmentation. 3. More HD management involved to change compression ratio's. 4. Harder to reinstall your OS. So I was looking around one day and discovered and extra "drive". It had one HUGE file on it that was 40m in size. Well I was like. If I delete this file I can get an extra 40m!! HOLY CRAP! So I deleted it and yep I HAD 40 EXTRA MEGABYTES! YAY!. I then rebooted......and everything was gone. You see that 40meg file WAS the HD.....and my deleting it wiped everything. Obviously I was none too happy. That was my last experience with Doublespace/Drivespace. NEVER AGAIN!

Quote: Could it be, possibly, that with W2k & XP, MS finally have a set of OSes that "does exactly what it says on the tin"? AndyF PS Apologies for the quote marks, it won't make sense if you don't live in the UK... ehhh no. The release of 2K had many issues but almost none were GUI based but were rather "How do I get 2K workin on my 'puter?" (ACPI mostly) or "How do I get my applications to work". XP still has the same issues (less ACPI problems since ACPI hardware has progressed more) but also adds to those issues by the MASSIVE # of complaints by users who have issues with the GUI.

Is there any way to add a percentage of how many progs/hardware work for each os? Mabye a percentage on the main page. For instance the user logs on and see's that of all the software/hardware logged at NTCompatible that: 85% Games work in Windows 2000 40% Games work in NT4 ...... Just a thought.....

heh. That was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy back when and I was giving instructions for someone who had no CLI experience. Here's THE ULTIMATE SLIPSTREAM GUIDE! (ALMOST) (Still gotta include attaching other programs to the install, and gonna have an NT4 SP6a Slipstream guide soon) http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=12009443&m=6140970053

Doubtful. Forums such as Ars Technica still get posts daily and their forum is large than NTCompatible. Several factors: 1. No forumgoers with ummm.... "distinct" personalities. (You know what I mean ) These guys would provide a massive influx of new forumgoers just to see their rantings and ravings. Once they came to the forum they would see how good it was and stick around. Unfortunately...or fortunately we haven't had one of those since "A" and before that was "J". 2. No big OS debate. 2K vs XP. NT vs 9x has been hashed over so many times that a search of the forums can pretty much answer the standard questions. With less and less people using 9x now that XP is out there is almost no 9x vs NT debate anymore and 2k VS XP debate is still there but hardly at a level to provide an influx of new members. 3. No big projects. I puter along with my NT4 SP6a slipstream project, my NT Game list Project, and my checklists for newbie's and for my workcenter, Howto's on various things from Networking to Windows. Most forums have a central project to work around or a goal. TechPC lets' the forum members review products and desing How-To's. ArsTechnica has their members design articles for their site and has their free software project. NTCompatible just has users who browse the boards and help each other out.
-
Bump.. I'm starting to implemenent How-To's and checklists 'n things for the workcenter. These should be able to be ported nicely to NTCompatible.... Wow...This thread is a year old! WE REALLY NEED TO GET THIS IMPLEMENTED!
-
Wow...Look at this thread. Referencing Whistler has improving Game/Application Compatibility for the home user. Things haven't really changed as much as some people thought however. 2000/XP about the same. We were pretty right about 2000 users not really needing to upgrade to XP but 9x users really do need to wipe that junk off of their systems. Anyone have any new thoughts on the home os situation.

While I was growing up and since I was still so young I would copy software all of the time. Since I was the only one in the family who was interested in computers no one else would be bothered to pay $$$ for a program I was interested in. I remember a couple of times waaaaaaaaaayyy back when I'd see a brand spankin' new copy of PC Tools or Qemm and I'd just hint a little to my parent's. (We could backup to floppies faster and easier!) (We don't have to manage our memory config's as often any more!) But paying $40+ for a software tool definetly wasn't on their very long list of NECESSARY items. Unfortunately they were necessary for me and my education in computer software. Which is why I downloaded away starting on my ol' 2400baud, 14.4,28,33,T1 (I gave up on modems back in '98). After dealing with the pain of owning a 286 for 4 lONG years. My parent's finally bought a 486DX4/100. This was a godsend. But it didn't really change the situation that much as far as software was concerned. Finally I was old enough to get a job. Woohoo! With the job I was able to buy computer parts! Unfortunately spending your $$$ on parts doesn't leave much $$ for software. (Not at the levels at which I operate anyway). So I'd still download and copy away just to keep up with the latest stuff. Finally, I moved out of the house and got a real job. I'm pulling in a paltry $1,600+ a month. This fits my habits just fine! Now I could buy Computer Hardware AND Software all I want! Woohoo! So, the "pirating" situation before I got a job was necessary for my computer livelyhood I guess you could say. SO what's it like now? Now.... I'm an American who lives in the UK. Buying games in the UK requires me to go through the exchange rate which can get expensive. I don't really pay attention to that however. Spending massive ammounts of money on computer stuff is not a factor for me. Nowadays the way it works for me is that if someone I know has a game then I copy it if I don't have it. If I go to the store or shop around on-line and I see a game I want...then I buy it. If I go to the store and see that no new games are available then I buy a game that I don't have the original CD for. There is SOO much software out there for a person like me. I'm pretty much the GO-TO guy for work and friends on software and my NT Game Compatibility list would be majorly expensive and almost impossibile to reach it's current level if I'd gone through only legitimate means. As far as work software goes? Like any workplace they are VERY tight with their money. VERY. I NEED to implement certain procedures to make my life easier. Geesh, these guys have checklists upon checklists that I could automate easily with commcercial tools......but they don't wanna spend the money. So my choices are: 1. Spend HOURS EVERY SINGLE DAY performing checklists and doing nothing else because I'm doing these checklists. 2. Spend hours upon hours researching and downloading freeware tools and trying to figure out a good way to implement all this freeware to perform functions to automate tasks easier. (Unfortunately I get reamed for not performing the checks (because I'm trying to figure out how to make 'em easier)....and unfortunately no one else in the shop gives a d*** about anything in the shop...unless they get in trouble. :rolleyes) 3. Download trialwire and find the serial. Yep, that's right. Crack it or reg it. "Temporary" (for who knows how long ;( ) but necessary to get some procedures done right. Then when the next year rolls around and they do their Licensing checks they'll quickly realize that they now HAVE to use this software and now they will HAVE to buy it! Muahahahha! GAMES 1. If it uses some form of copy-protection then I copy it. Unless it's REALLY good and then I'll download it. 2. If the game isn't readily available to buy then I copy it. 3. If a company made me angry before for whatever reason then I copy it. 4. I'm starting to initate the "If game comes on 3 or more CD's then copy it" policy. Why just today I paid 60+ for Neverwinter Nights. It comes on 3 CD's. How many times did I have to insert the CD's to Install and play the game? 6 TIMES. Yes 6!!! 5. I'm also debating on a CD-Key Policy. I currently maintain an Excel sheet that lists CD Keys for 30+ of my games. That's ridiculous to keep track of. Mabye I'll copy every game that uses CD Key's too. Software 1. Download it. 2. Try it. 3. Register it. 4. Archive it. 5. Get around to playing around with it 4+ months later. 6. Find out new ver is out. Repeat steps 1-5. So to sum it all up. It is unrealistic to maintain a PURE Computer Software Buying Philosophy if you are in the Computer Business. It is simply impossible. (Before someone retorts that it's not....I betcha that Winzip/Winrar/Winace/PowerArchiver has been sitting unregged on your computer for more than 30 days hasn't it?) For ANYONE in ANY form of Computer related business it is necessary to research ALL alternatives. To research all alternatives legitametly would require massive amounts of $$$ that would just be wasted when the full version could be tried for however long you wished allowing you to decide if this is the software for you and wether you should buy it or not. As for the subject of this thread. Would I join a GLOBAL protest? Well, I'm not a protester and I don't like to group (easier to get mowed down that way). So I'll just remain independent of the whole and hopefully continue my practices for some time to come.

Recycler IS the recycle bin directory for NTFS partitions. You can not right-click and choose Empty on that folder. You must go within the folder and then right-click on the subfolders...or simply delete all of the subfolders. Check out www.xteq.com and download X-setup 6.2. It includes options for disabling NTFS features. Why is security so much of a concern for you? As long as you assign permissions there is no trouble whatsoever and if your part of the admin group you don't even need to do that.

Just noticed that the PowerPuff Girls movie will be out on the 3rd along with Men In Black 2.. This leaves me with a dilemma. Which to see first. I think the PowerPuff Girls will be better than MIB 2. Yep, it'll DEFINETLY be alot better. Go Girls!

?? MS doesn't sell Windows 2000 SP2 integrated as far as I know. I've seen Dell discs with integrated SP's but never by Microsoft....and even the Dell integrated SP's don't update the boot disks to work with the integrated disc.

LC4 formerly known as l0phtcrack is a professional level NT password cracker for networks. It is quite possibily the NT password cracker out there for Win32. Use it myself at work and it works quite nicely and very fast. I have no idea why he wants LC3....... (A long time ago it was originally freeware and the old freeware version can still be downloaded from their site)

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_id=837277&forum_id=7223 If they updated their frickin' code it wouldn't be necessary for us to emulate now would it? ;( There's absolutely no reason to BUY games that do not work on today's computers. No reason at all. If companies actually updated their code they might actually MAKE money because gamers would actually be grateful. But whadoIknow.

Latest results Windows 2000 Windows Working=189 Not Working=13 DOS Working=173 Not Working=24 Windows XP Windows Working=198 Not Working=14 DOS Working=175 Not Working=26 *Both lists are not equal. For instance some games still untested in 2000 which is why it has a shorter number of games than XP listed. ** These latest results have a lower number of working games due to the fact that I listed games that work but run too fast and cannot be slowed down as not working.

Sigh. If a company is still making money off of a product that they sell then I expect the same amount of support to be provided as they do with their latest and greatest product. If they cannot then they may as well officialy drop support for the dang OS because obviously the money spent for buying the OS is not being used properly.

I like to kid around all the time about a list that M$ keeps on stuff they purposely keep out just for a new version. Stuff that worked in NT4 that doesn't work in 2K but now mysteriously works in XP. Stuff that works in XP but doesn't in 2K because M$ wants to sell XP more. This is why I maintain MY little list. It's called my "Why I am moving away from M$" list. It's growing..... YEAH! The way I see it *nix will be on corporate desktops in a couple of years. Easy. The boundary of the network is already *nix. No Microsoft product will EVER replace those. *nix is getting better and better and eventually a *nix distro that companies are comfortable with WILL be deployed. If Microsoft wished to win me back: 1. Give me control. However much I want. There is no reason why there shouldn't be more customization options during install. YES. Sysprep can do this but not at the level I wish...and it's far better for EVERYONE if the options are already there in the install. 2. Don't make the DEFAULT of your **** Pro OS have every peice of crap pretty thing loaded. 3. Support your older products as well as the older products THAT YOU STILL SELL ******! Implementing new feature in your "SERVICE" packs for your latest OS while releasing another SP for your older OS with no new features does not a happy consumer make. Sticking more supported apps in your App Compat database in your latest OS and up[censored] it more frequently while the EXACT same thing can be done for your OS does not a happy consumer make. 4. Product Activation. It's bad. Get rid of it. 5. Breaking your own rules does not make a happy consumer. A Service Pack is just that. Security fixes and bug fixes. NOTHING ELSE. You want to implement a new change? Release a FEATURE PACK. Dangit. Gotta find my list. These are just off the top of my head. I'm on leave and I didn't bring my list with me....I think.

IIRC, SP4 included DX6 DirectPlay. Everything else was still DX3 tho.

Don't feel too far behind. The Final ver was realeased on Friday. After I set it up on my network and was about to post it to NT Compatible I noticed it was already on the Front Page.....for about 2 secs. We really need either a sorting/ranking system and a commentary system for the front page because this little gem just flashed right on by. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/ Read ALL of the documentation before you begin. Also this works just fine on non-AD domains. It's just a ***** to setup compared to an AD domain. (Okay, not that bad) I just haven't figured out how to push the clients settings out via SMS yet.
