What kind of software are you looking at for deployments? Do ALL pc's need ALL of this software? How easy is it to install this software? Okay, SMS is WAY overkill in this situation. It's also not at the level that you are looking for. It is getting better however and Microsoft it still up[censored] it. In fact the SMS Value Pack should be out pretty soon which is supposed to integrate further with their SUS (Software Update Service) program. In fact I recommend you do this: 1. Install and implement Microsoft SUS (The way this works is that you install a Server Side Component on a Windows 2000 IIS Server Non-Domain Controller, this program will synchronize with the Microsoft Windows Update Server and download all Update for Windows 2000/XP Systems. The next step is a client side which simply needs to be run on all clients (the installation program does not have to be configured) After the client is installed on all computers then use Group Policy to push out the proper Update settings for all Clients) This program ONLY pushes out Security Updates for now. 2. Buy the programs from Shavlik Technologies. (These programs include Account Inspector/Password Inspector/Baseline Security Analyzer/Hotfix Scanner Account Inspector is handy. Not as informative as the freeware tool Dumpsec but Account Inspector is better for the WGM or for management types and it just concerns ACCOUNT information. Password Inspector in my opinion is a piece of junk. It just checks that your passwords are compliant with whatever policy that you have for them. It doesn't crack passwords. So ignore this program abd buy L0phtcrack 4 (LC4) Baseline Security Analyzer - Same as the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer except these are the guys who made the prog. Also this version can upload results to an SQL server and includes other handy-dandy options. (EXCELLENT TOOL...especially for the people who you have describe) Hotfix Checker- More advanced than the Security Analyzer and probably not for the people you described. Doesn't include hints on how to configure your system like Security Analyzer does but it's more configurable and easier to for scanning purposes. 3. Buy LC4. L0phtcrack 4 is THE password cracker. Every network should have it. 4. Learn Group Policy. Through it you can do lots of neat stuff and it's exactly what your looking for. Buy an .MSI program from Installshield and teach them how to use it or learn how to use the simpler programs based off Installshield Technology that come on your Windows 2000 CD's. I recommend buying the Install Shield Stuff. As far as I know there's no program that will say: Load up a GUI that lists all computers in your domain. Prompt for setup program executable and has you run through the program options and install. Complies the installation information into a file and compiles the package. Prompt you to deploy. You CAN do this with SMS but it's not as simple as I just described. It's one of those yes it is easy and no it isn't easy kind of things. For instance, once you compile the package you THEN have 2 options for deployment. 2 Queries. 1 query for ALL clients who do not have the programd and 1 Query for All clients who DO have the program. To create these queries you also have to know what executables or registry entries to check for to verify that the program did/did not install on the client computer. The second option is to use .MIF's which when pushed to ALL clients will gather the information automagically and report it back to you, BUT you still have to create the Queries! hehehe. Queries can be as simple as you need them to be or they can be highly advanced scripting languages. Considering that you look like you want to deploy lots of programs with the most easy of use....I recoemmend you stay away from SMS and look for a better solution. I seem to recall there being other solutions that SMS for deployment but I can't recall what they were, I think Group Policy is what you want tho. It's already on your network....you just need to figure out how to use it and how to teach it to your admins.

8) I've had those issues with every computer I've ever owned! 8) Well except for the REALLY old ones.

It's not the Drive. (Well it could be a bad drive). I have that drive and have used it constantly for the past year in NT4/2K/XP. No bluescreens.

USB does have greater power but the distances you are looking at are unrealistic. Also all of those devices being USB would cause MAJOR interference. You may think that USB 2 pipe is HUGE but realistically it is not....not even close. Processor requirements and latency in all of those bandwidth devices fighting each other over that puny little USB connection would be HELL. Look at water cooling if your so worried over the noice. I find it comforting.

Wireless NICS do not requires an AP. They can run in AD-Hoc mode. This can work with multiple wireless NICS also. Obviously this is not recommended for many computers since they'll all be broadcasting to each other and operating in essentially peer-to-peer mode but it'll still work. Heck, it may work fine in his case depending on the makeup of his walls. If no concrete it would work fine. Still I'd recommend using an wirelesll Cable/Router and then stick a wireless NIC in the remote computer and run it in infrastructure mode. The Wireless Cable/Router would plug into your cable connection and offer you NAT and other such goodies.

I'm on a 9600baud connection so forgive the short response. Go into your SYSTEM32 directory. View hidden files and system hidden files. Delete the BLUE colored folders (compressed folders) that date from before your upgrade.

RCTW/Outcast/SOF2 are OpenGL games that work fine under NT4 The only DX emulator that I am aware of is one from PowerVR but it's only a Directx 8.1 emulator which means that it only emulates those games....and it doesn't work very well (at all) in NT4 for what you want to do. Your stuck with OGL games and DirectX6 or less games.

Next month.

VPC is better for compatibility than VMware. Unfortunately DirectDraw IS supported unlike Vmware but D3D is not in either emulation software. VESA is nice in VPC but unfortunately the sound is crappy. But for compatibility VPC is the only route to go for emulation software.

Get a Liteon 48x. Most compatible with CloneCD and I've had nary a problem with 'em.

Have fun! Fallout is one of the best RPG's evar.

Blech. Download FREEBSD. NOW! and create yourself a Firewall boxen using such software. Software firewalls do not a secure network make! Don't worry. The computer doesn't have to be much of a computer at all. I'd recommend something fairly recent tho in the 300+mhz range for Software/hardware availability reasons.

Use Terminal Services (aka Remote Desktop Connection). It'll be MUCH faster than VNC and most likely work better for ya. I like VNC too but in this case TS would be faster/easier/better. Since you say your friend won't be using the computer then TS will work fine. Oh, while your connected to his computer he'll either see that his workstation is locked or the Logon screen. If he logs in then you will be disconnected. It looks like there's no way to send you a message that he is on so it looks like you'll be abruptly disconnected. If so then you know it's him.

Weeirdd. Never gotten that one before. I dunno if there are any logs files that OpenOffice generates either. I doubt it. You should prob;y do what Sampson said. Email Sun.

www.gamecopyworld.com If you cannot find one then look on www.google.com for Daemon Tools. It's a CD emulator.

Can't see the error. What is it? OpenOffice has always opened fine for me in 7+ installations so far on different computers. Didn't open once just once because Windows had messed up and I had to reboot....

There is'nt any supported way and no hacks that I am aware of. ME is not a business OS and therefore not support by Microsoft im upgrading to a Business OS. The fact that you wish to do such a thing suggests to me that you do not have proper backups and do not know exactly where you giles are located. It would benefit YOU far more greatly if your organized your files before moving to a new OS. This makes things easier by far.

Primary Partition/Logical Partition Multi OS Question
DosFreak replied to dazz1973's topic in Customization & Tweaking
The OS does not have to reside on the primary partition but the boot files MUST. In the case of DOS: MSDOS.SYS IO.SYS COMMAND.COM In the case of NT: Boot.ini NTDETECT.COM NTLDR If you can always install the OS's from oldest to newest. Currently I am multi-booting with 98/NT4/2K/XP Here is my configuration for my OS HD: C: BOOT partition/PAGEFILE 2G FAT16 D: NT4 OS 4G NTFS E: NT4 APPS 10g NTFS F: 98SE OS 4G FAT32 G: 98 APPS 10g FAT32 H: 2K OS 4G MTFS I: 2K APPS 10G MTFS J: XP OS 4G NTFS K: XP APPS 10G NTFS -
Is it the original CD? As far as I know all Fallout 2 has is the CD check. No other copy protection. So if your CD is an unoriginal copy it could be corrupted. Try a NO CD crack on it.

Are you using any Hardware monitoring programs? If so disable them and try again.
-
Have you tried the latest patch. IIRC, it corrected the monitor probl.

It's not your mobo. It's your HD Controller. Buy a Promise 133 HD controller and your computer will support it just fine.
