Updating Norton Antivirus subscription on two PC's
DosFreak replied to SnapperOne's topic in Software
I'm sure everyone will be happy to know that the latest rumour is that Mcaffee is coming back to MS OS's in the next major ver of MS OS...After XP. -
There are ways to replace the files manually in Recover Mode....I believe they are listed on the MS website...but only for NT4. I've been meaning to write up something on how to do it but haven't gotten around to it.

It's called making money. Which Microsoft excels at. The only way to get Media Player 8 is to download the hack that MAY work on ME/2000. (2000 is a sure thing, ME is not) or to upgrade to XP. THANK YOU M1cro@ft! The only thing I can recommend is to try a non Micro@oft Media Player.

Need to build a wireless network for an office
DosFreak replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Slack Space
Can you post a map? Also make a map BEFORE you make ANY changes to the current (nonexistent) network. Then make a map AFTER you are done. Keep it updated too because this will help you out and anyone else who makes any chnages in the future. Also are absolutely 100% sure that the walls are just plaster/wood and not concrete/steel/lead or whatever. Wireless obviously works best when you have LOS but without it you have to be sure of what your trying to punch through. Akso how exactly are your computers situated? Would it be possibile to stick a switch downstairs and upstairs. Connect Cat5/Fibre between them? Or are the computers situated in such a way as to make this unfeasible? -
Need to build a wireless network for an office
DosFreak replied to HELLBRINGER's topic in Slack Space
Whar kind of security do you need? If you need security for this network then forgetdaboudit. ANY commercial wireless network can be cracked easily as was proved pretty recently. So if you plan to go through with it try to minimize the distance that your LAN exctendes from the building and keep confidential information away from the wireless! -
I've just been scanning my network with ISS. Been gone 2 months and the idiots ran the scans but never did the fixes. ;( Didn't expect 'em to anyways but you'd at least expect some initiative. :sigh: Nobody cares about networks anymore. It's just a job to come in and sit around like the helpdesk to 'em.

Tyrian 2000 DOS does not work in 2000/XP. Sorry. I heard that a different ver of Tyrian works but I've never found it or used it. It doesn't even work in emulators such as Connectix Virtual PC so I'm guessing it's a speed/processor problem.

Jedi Outcast uses the Q3 engine. Q3 runs on any OGL compatible card that fits the requirements..You just gotta have the drivers. Try here for the most "official" 3dfx drivers: http://www.x3dfx.com/ The site was made by former 3dfx employees. Also ask Philipp/SHS, they may be able to help you better in this area.

Yep, there is no need to use SoundFX. VDMSound is better in all areas. Yep, that's right. ALL. Use VDMSound. It has more features. Is more tested. Is supported and updated more and has a HUGE user base.

Phillip, Clutch....delete this thread please. Incorrect information and blatant advertising.

Windows NT loses mouse when I unplug it
DosFreak replied to SteveNz's topic in Customization & Tweaking
NT4? Actually you are not supposed to unplug the mouse when the computer is turned on because there is a slight chance that you might damage the PS2 port...this hasn't stopped me or anyone else I know however. Are the 2 mice the same kind of mice? If using 2 different mice even if they are both PS2 sometimes the drivers are not correct and NT will not be able to use the mouse. -
Guys for a heavy gamer and Internet user which OS is better?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Software
2000 is support by many games, Just look at all the games that support XP. See that little 2000 to the left of XP? -

ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus_corp I don't consider Antivirus Definitions to be payed for and neither does Symantec it seems. -

Why not just download the defs manually? -
It's never worked for me....but whenever I have a Safedisc problem I just use the cracks.... I remember trying it once or twice and it never working so I just gave up on it. Removed it so I could identify Safedisc problems...just in case it actually worked.

The Vortex is a MUCH better card than that Ensoniq....the Audigy is MUCH better than both.

Nope, it's true. That's exactly what Microsoft will do. It's making alot of people too. Microsoft themselves states that Service Packs will not include new "features" just fixes and security updates. Now they are breaking their word...again. They SHOULD release these changes in a seperate "Feature Pack" instead of the SERVICE pack. Now they are subtly changing a product that some people were quite happy to buy as it was and they have no choice but to integrate these features! Thanks Micro$ft! Quote: With SP3, Windows 2000 will now have the ability to automatically check for updates from the Internet - an important addition for network administrators. The Automatic Updates panel will also allow users to schedule updates for certain times of the day. So I guess they are integrating Critical Update Notification that has been available from MS Windows Update almost since the release of Windows 2000? Of course the site doesn't mention that it's been available...and that any Network Admin worth anything wouldn't put it to use on their network. Woohoo! Let's patch all of our network machines on a weekly schedule using the latest updates from Microsoft! Excellent Idea! /sarcasm Hopefully Microsoft doesn't leave this enable by default as they do with XP....hopefully I can turn it off BEFORE installing SP3. Sigh.
