Guys what really makes WinXP better than Win2k pro?

2000 went GOLD on Dec 1999. XP went GOLD August 2001. 20 months=1 year 8 months. Almost 2 years. Pretty sad huh? 2 years for not much of a difference.... I expect that's why .NET Server has been taking so long. Should be ALOT more polished than XP is. It's been pushed back until mid 2003 for "security" reasons. heh. Right around that time sound's about right for the major version of a Microsoft OS to come out....
  2. Definetly not a cerebral movie but that's not what it's made for....It's got THE ROCK! Woohoo! He plays his part well in this movie. None of the lame half-scorpion-man stuff. Just all-warrior. My one and only gripe with the movie is that the Sorceress was prety weak magic wise. She should have done more magic. She should have been labeled a Seer for what little she did. Oh, she does have one good scene but anybody with proper training could have done that. It's was still pretty good tho.

Dark Forces under WinXP - No Sound

Dark Forces is a DOS game which being as such means that it does not see your SB Live!. Your Live! on IRQ 3 means nothing to Dark Forces because NTVDM does not see your sound card. Windows XP emulates a Soundblaster card at IRQ 5 Port 220 DMA 1 for Sound Effects and General MIDI for Music. Try configuring the sound settings for Dark Forces as such. If XP's sound emulation doesn't work for you or sound's terrible try VDMSound a superior sound emulation solution in most ways except for a few exceptions http://ntvdm.cjb.net/

    P4 with SDRAM

ACPI should be fine. The Audigy has been sharing IRQ's fine whenever I've used it. I'd watch out for that Hauppauge However. Use your sound card while watching some TV and see if they conflict.

What video card do you want?

Gonna get the Ti4600 when I get back. Currently own a GF3 Ti500. Ordinary GF3 before that. GF2 GTS before that. Matrox G400. Then TNT1.

    cd copy question

I make all my CD images with my Plextor CDR. I recommend you do the same. CDR's are made for that purpose while ordinary CD reader's just read and usually do not have the advanced reading capabilities of CDR's. Now if your CDR is reaaalllyy ancient and your CD Reader is REAALLLYYY new then your CD Reader could possibile produce a better image but it's doubtful. Just download CloneCD and check it's Help file for your CDR's capabilities. CloneCD itself can also tell you the capabilities of both CD drives when you load it up and check the log.

    Oddworld Abe's Exoddus isn't workin =(

Strange....my version doesn't give me any errors at all and works fine. Wish I had the CD's with me so I could compare 'em to yours. According to my NT Game Compatibility list I had no trouble whatsoever with the game in Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

    System Shock 2 on Win2k?

To install start setup by going to the START menu. Then the RUN button Use the letter of your CDROM where your SS2 CD is located and type this: F:\SETUP.EXE -LGNTFORCE This will start the SS2 setup. Once finished install the latest patch. You may need to install a gamecrack but most likely not.

    Saw the Scorpion King yesterday!

Action. It's hinted at a little bit that the Rock/Sorceress get together (well more than a little bit hinted ) but they barely show any of that. It's action all the way through!

    OSX beta still going strong

http://www.wired.com/news/mac/0,2125,51926,00.html Quote: Apple declined to specify a date or time period when faster browsers or OS X performance enhancements would be available, but Grewal speculated it could take more than a few months. "I think this time next year or in 18 months, Apple will have time to focus on not just porting (i.e., translating software from OS 9 to OS X), but on how they can make the performance better," he said. hehehehe

Your first Internet surf, when and how was it?

First online experience? Back in 1990. Just moved to Okinawa,Japan and my parent's bought a brand spankin' new Packard Bell 286@12mhz. Had a 2400b modem. 1meg System Ram. 256k Vram. 15" monitor. No Mouse. MSDOS 4.0. Anyways I disocvered tons of neat BBS'S that I could connect to all day and download away! Didn't discover the wonders of ZMODEM until one day I was wondering what the different download protocols in the QMODEM software did. So I tried ZMODEM while download and it actually resumed! 8) 8) This of course changed things drastically. I remember one day when I was looking at that 5mg (I think) download of Doom when it first came out and thinking THAT'S GOING TO TAKE ME FOREVER! AAAAAAAAARRRGGGHH! Luckily I went up to the exchange and saw the computer operator at the Exchange playing it so I played against him and he gave me a copy. Unfortunately Doom could not run on a 286 so I resorted to bypassing the Exchange's computers password security, installing Doom on school computers, and annoying friends by playing it on their computers! Tradewars kicked arse and still does. LOTRD really kicked *** and still does. Didn't really get into the Internet until I got back to the states in 94/95 which is of course when the 'net started to kick off major. Cruised the net with 14.4 with that one Internet Service...dangit forgot the name..GNN? ehhh..doesn't sound right I think they were bought my MSN or something. Anyways since I was so young I'd use up the free time on AOL accounts or use my friends Internet Accounts who had multiple user logon enabled. Got a little bit back into the BBS scene when I got back to the states but access to the Internet quickly phased it out.

    P4 with SDRAM

Also I haven't tested this out for myself but I've heard that RDRAM outperforms DDR past 2+ghz. I can remember at what speeds the RDRAM/DDR were running but looking at the specs for RDRAM/DDR I could see how it would. And SDRAM on a P4 is a baaaaaaaaaaadd idea.

    XP Video card suggestions

At my local Best Buy Geforce 4 MX 420's are selling for $99. Bought one of those for my parent's Compaq replacing an ATI 3D Rage LT Pro. (Any Nvidia card with the designation "MX" is pretty much relegated to 1024X768 and lower gaming on the latest games coming out today.) The GF4 MX is basically a more advanced GF2. The GF3 is better than the GF4 MX. The GF4 is not that much different than a GF3 except if you turn on AA which is where the GF4 really pulls away from the GF3. Not sure about the 2D Quality of the MX series of GF4 cards but since your using an ancient ATI card I'm betting the GF4 2D Quality should be superior. You may want to check some reviews on the net about low-end graphics cards. ATI/Nvidia are really the only players in the graphics card market right now. As for driver suppport Nvidia's has been producing higher quality drivers for NT os's far longer than ATI has and it shows. *Does anyone else find it odd that every time a new ATI driver is released they ALWAYS say there is a 20-30% performance increase and quality improvement? Geesh. By now they should be up to 600% increased performance over release and the quality should be infinite. ;(

    GF3 Ti200 or GF4 MX440 ?

Unless you have money to burn I wouldn't base your purchases on how overclockable a part is. Not unless you know for SURE that the part will last. Some times you're lucky, sometimes your not. I've picked my parts carefully when I bought a part for overclocking and so far haven't been burned yet. Ahhh, those 700mhz P3's @ 933mhz have been going strong for a year and a half!

    What is the MCSE certification?

If you tire of software, doen't easily understand it, like hardware better, want more $$, or a little more respect .... Get a Cisco Cert. MUCH harder to get than an MCSE but if you get one of those then you'll be deemed as knowing more than an MCSE which is fairly accurate. Networks are pretty much where it's at and with the dumbing down of modern computers/software the PC Tech side/software training side will be considerably less profitable for a technician......also most likely less interesting too. Also try to force youself to get into *nix. *nix boxes are used for most business secuirty on their networks. I see *nix progressing more and more into the desktop arena as time goes on. Also it's easier to learn the basics again with a *nix box whereas with an NT box you'll just sit there clickin' on things....

help with XP and my Slave HD

Describe EXACTLY what you did. Did you connect the HD to the same cable as the other HD? Did you format the new HD or did you just boot up the computer and saw in XP that it only showed 1.97gb? It sounds to me like it was either formatted with FAT16 before you purchased it or you formated it yourself wit FAT16. FAT16 supports a maximum of 2gb partitions, which is why it is likely showing up as 1.97gb.

    GF3 Ti200 or GF4 MX440 ?

And on the flip side of the coin.... Going from a TNT1 to a Matrox G400 I was happy. So so drivers (Opengl sucked at the time). www.matroxusers.com is a good forum. Unfortunately the G400 ran out of steam for me late '99. SO I upgraded to a GF2 GTS. Nvidia drivers MUCH better than Matrox's and have been so ever since. (Much easier for Matrox since their drivers only cover a limited range of cards, you could say the same with Nvidia but Nvidia has done well considering all the cards they have.) Went to a GF3. Then GF3 T500. Went I get home soon to be a GF4 TI4600. I don't expect much from Matrox in the gamer market and I recommend no one else do either. In that way lies disappointment. Just forgetaboudit. Oh, and I don't even want to talk about ATI. Go with the GF3. That GF4 is worse than the GF3. Unless your short on $$.

    Hard drive questions.....

Nope. No diff at all. The only major difference is that buying a DMA/100/133 controller/hard drive will likely be "faster" simply due to it being made with the latest technologies. The speeds (33/66/100/133) do not really affect speed that much at all. A 66 controller is the minimum I would go with nowadays however since it seems that in single drive configurations IDE drives are averaging around 40m. In RAID0 I'm thinking it's around 50+ on the DMA/133's. Also sticking different speed HD's on the same controller doesn't necessarily mean that the faster HD would run at the same speed as the slower, it mostly depends on the controller type but nowadays with most modern controllers it doesn't matter. Each HD should run at their max DMA speed.

    XP on systems below minimum

For usability? Around 340+mhz. I'm currently visiting my parent's and have been upgrading their Compaq Presaior 5220: Before: ATI Rage LT Pro (4mb Vram + 8 shared) 6gb WD HD 64mb Micron memory 98FE Now: Geforce4 MX 420 (64mb) 60gb Maxtor 7200rpm DMA/133@33 3 128mb Kingstom PC-100 sticks (384mb) XP Pro The first upgrade I did was the HD. Yanked out the old and stuck in the new. Installed XP Pro fresh. XP was DOG slow, as I knew that it would be. Memory usage was around 80+meg with no other programs loaded. I then began installing programs and such and experienced an average memory usage of around 150+ meg. (This fits with my usual desktop memory usage with my computers at work). As you can imagine swaping 70mg to a pagefile was EXTREMELY PAINFUL. Basically only one program could be loaded at a time for usability and painful accessage of HD was hurting my ears. So today I drove the hour to Evansville Best Buy, picked up 384mb of memory and that GF4. Stuck 'em in and the HD hasn't made a noise yet! YAY! . Now as for video the old ATI was fine for desktop work. (This monitor is at the maximum capable of 1024@60hz, 800@85hz). But I wanted to bring my bro/sis into some of the latest games. So I stuck that GF4 in and did some benchmarks. Basically the latest games such as C&C:Renegade,Jedi Knight 2, Quake 3 can only be run in 640X480. For the Q3 engines VERTEX lighting has to be used since it seems LIGHTMAPING is too much for this crappy processor.... 2D games (RPG's, RTS, solitaire type game will be used for this computer unless I can find me a K63) Speaking of the processor. It's a crappy K62 380mhz with no on-board L2cache. There is 64kb of L1 cache and 512kb of cache on the motherboard but the absence of L2 cache on the chip itself is limiting performance greatly. For desktop work (Outlook, a few Internet Explorer Windows, wordpad, Browsing XP files, viewing PDF's) it's fine and performes all-right. (Note that I have all graphical enhancements turned off as I do on my super-computer back home ). Gonna see if I can find me a K63 chip around these parts...if I want to bother that much with it. So yeah any 300+mhz computer could run XP fine. Just make sure it has 192+mb of ram and it'll be fine!
