Vmware is pants for DOS compatibily. Virtual PC is MUCH better and the best DOS emulation you can get today in NT.

Send, send, send, send! Gonna review basic maintenance things I do to computers and see what's feasible to push out through SMS. Any help would be appreciated. Gonna get these FAT drives off my network.

Well, just pushed out a file/registry permissions program that removes the "Everyone" group and some other common security procedures to all workstation on-base! So far it's pushed out and installed to 30+ computers! Gonna do an ISS scan tommorow and see if the vulnerabilities have decreased. Also I'm starting to get more and more into queries. Created a couple of queries for the different SP levels of NT and am starting to get into BIOS ver of the computers. Also made another query to look for FAT partitions on computers! So much to do. So much to do. 8) 8)

I agree with everything that clutch said except for Mcafee. I prefer Norton Antivirus Corporate. MUCH BETTER.

Should work fine. Only thing I see that may cause trouble is that mobo chipset....and that crappy CDR. But if 2000 runs well for ya then XP should....theoretically.

If your games do not run under NT it's best just to dual-boot instead of not playing and/or spending forever trying to get them to work in NT. If you'd like I can send ya my NT Games Compatibility list (Haven't had time to add my list to the NT Compatible site yet). Currently 215 of my windows games 12 do not work. Out of 235 of my DOS games 21 do not work. Unfortunately I haven't fully tested ALL of the DOS games for sound compatibility which means that around 20% I'm sure will have sound problems that cannot be fixed unless run in real DOS.

Oh I was quite aware that the game performance would be the way it was between the 2 systems but the desktop operations was VERY suprising. It's nice to see that even tho everyone else say's that you can't see the difference between between a couple of hundred megahertz at the desktop level are WRONG. Every single time I've upgraded my processer desktop operations have increase speed DRASTICALLY. It does make me wince every now and then tho to see my processor spike at 100% on this....thing.

Quote: on my computer you don't even really have to tweak it like that at all aside from the hardware acceleration. I notice no difference in desktop or game performance on .NET It probably makes more of a difference on a sigle processor machine to disable the extra services. Once you go dual you never go back. I never thought I'd say it but I did. This Athlon XP 2000+ is faster than my Dual P31ghz@1166 at the desktop. Games above 1280X1024+ run at about the same fps...below that res the XP is about 50fps faster. This is with all the same hardware except CPU/MOBO/RAM. Going to get a duallie though when I get back from TDY/Leave!

Mechwarrior 2 (DOS) does not work in 2000/XP without Connectix Virtual PC Mechwarrior 2: Mercernaries (DOS) does not work in 2000. It works in XP. Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries (Windows) does not work in 2000/XP. Works in Connectix Virtual PC.

Accekeration is decreased by default. Run dxdiag and move the slider all the way to the right.

Yep, stoopid M$. When the Post SP6a first came out I tested it out on a Compaq Server, important but not importasnt enough that a little downtime wouldn't hurt. Well I installed it and it crashed the box. I ripped out my DOS NTFS disks and found which file I needed to replace to get it to work again. I was also able to replace the file in the Post SP6a update so that I could install the Post SP6a rollup on the rest of my Compaq servers without going through that mess again. Still it isn't toally Microsoft fault. This is Compaq we are talking about here. Was rebuilding a Proliant 1600 the other day and what I love about these Compaq's is the software support. The System flash Utitlity and the SmartStart CD are EXCELLENT tools. Even though Dell is replacing Compaq in the server Arena I wish Dell would make their server Software packlages as well as Compaq does.

Especially since the "connection" does not end for quite some time even if the file copy is finished. ALso you mention that your clients are using 98? Are you running a peer-to-peer network? If so your clients are just running around using anonymous access. In a 9x environment using 2k as your file server and with no PDC to authenticate your users would have to "log on" using a username/password that you would have to set for all 20 users. It would be far easier to pick up 1 copy of NT4/2K server, although it hurts me deeply to say this you can then make your file server a PDC/file server (Bleh!) I recommend 2k. You could then even start using AD and install the AD client on your 9x desktops....or go the cheap route and pick up NT4.

Nope, No Office pushes are going to happen here if I have a say in it. Heck, it was hard enough to convince myself to push out Service Packs! My main reason was that our WGM's need to be trained because they are pathetically ignorant of their jobs but also lazy.....they would never do the job anyway. So SMS will have to do it for them. Now gotta read up on pushing out the latest 2000 SRP/NT4 SP6a/NT4 Security Rollup/and the IE Security Rollup that just came out. I will have the ultimate secure network! Muahahahahhahaha. So far out of 125 machines patches with SP2 none have crashed so I'm happy. What worries me tho is the Post Sp6a security rollup which crashes Compaq computers with Smart Array controllers. When installed upon reboot the server crashes. So I think I'll limit SP6a/Post SP6a fix to workstations as it should be.

win95 desktop enhacement (web integration, quicklaunch, etc)
DosFreak replied to insaNity's topic in Legacy OS
You could also download the IE Admin kit and include the option for Desktop Integration. Works fine with IE6 in NT4. (No support for 95 in IE6) -
Search as in how? and why isn't the NT4 Server using Sp6a?

NT does not use Autoexec.bat/Config.sys while in NT. It parses autoexec.bat upon bootup but only for SET/PATH statements and then incorporates these into the registry. After bootup those files are useless. Autoexec.nt/config.nt located in the \system32 directory are what you need. Haven't tried that game in NT so not sure if changing the settings you need will work. Star Trek: 25th Anniversary works fine without any modifications in 2000/XP however. (Except you have to use VDMSound for sound)

You can easily fix your NT boot by using the recovery console.

Yep, I think .NET Server will be my next desktop OS

winxp ntfs and win2k ntfs compatibility
DosFreak replied to rgodart's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Not after usimg Diskeeper 7. Symantec has gone downhillsince NU for the DOS/8x line. Their NU have always been terrible for NT OS's. -
Odd. The VP6 was one of the best mobos I have ever owned.

Post your email address and I'll send you my Excel Spreadsheet. Do you have Office? (So you can read it). So far on my computer 2000/XP are pretty much equal but of course XP is the next version of Windows and most home software will be written for that. So it's recommended by pretty much any company out there to use XP for home use if your coming from 9x. I feel differently however. XP is in some ways LESS compatibility and MORE compatibile than 2000 in some ways and is not as professional an OS as it should be. In fact I still use 2000 as my main OS for home use and XP to port game fixes to 2000. So I recommend that you try XP first and then if you can grab a vopy of 2000 and decide for yourself which you like better.

winxp ntfs and win2k ntfs compatibility
DosFreak replied to rgodart's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Low level system utilities such as the ones you listed are not Microsoft programs and as such their usage of NTFS is pretty well experiemental. Microsoft doesn't really give away much information about NTFS so any third-party tool you see DO NOT TRUST.....EVER. -
DOH! I saw LG and all sanity was lost.
