They are pretty much equal Windows-wise as far as games compatibility. I'me gonna go back over the XP list this weekend. I think 1-3 games work in XP that don't in 2k and 1-3 work in 2k that don't in XP. As far as DOS games Windows 2000 is alot more compatibility. Which is REALLY odd. I can send you my Excel spreadsheet if you want it.

heh. I knew the mobile radeon 7500 sucked even without looking at the benchmarks (I haven't kept up in the mobile graphics lately). Well just checked out this website: http://www.extremetech.com/article/0,339...ap%253D4,00.asp Oh yeppee. Radeon outperforms the Geforce in 3Dmark. YAY! Too bad I won't be playing 3Dmark that often. ;( I'm stickin' with ma' Geforce baby! GO NVIDIA! WOOHOO! -
I consider WHQL certification a GOOD THING.

There are a few VESA modes that can be reached by the program if run in full screen mode but really there is no VESA support in 2000/XP. XP offers a couple more VESA modes (blocked) but no Linear modes which most of the newer VESA games need. There is a way to get WAR2 working it involves chaning a setting in the game's .cfg files but I forgot the setting. My copy of DOS War2 died long ago and I've been using Battle.net for my WAR2 fix.

Is a large harddrive a viable backup solution?
DosFreak replied to Nebuchadnezzar's topic in Hardware
Well, I was able to shuffle around some discs and finally forced myself to install the VIA 4-in-1 busmaster drivers. Got my second backup drive to DMA/66 instead of multi-word-DMA. Backup speed cut in half! Now it's 1hr 20mins to back up 44gb! WOOHOO!!!!! -
Just rerun VIA 4-in-1 setup and choose uninstall.

problem running old dos programs in xp
DosFreak replied to jerrmac's topic in Customization & Tweaking
Bleh. Connectix Virtual PC is FAARR more compatible with games than VPC. -
Ah, .NET Server is more of a Pro operating system than Pro. The default options are more like 2k's. Still a couple of options that should be unticked tho like Personal Menus. All in all tho I MIGHT update my servers to .NET and keep my users on 2k.

1. No DirectCD EVER. 2. Verify that your drives are supported by CloneCD 3. Only ever use CloneCD for reading CD's/Writing. Don't read from your DVD to your CDR. 4. Use Nero instead of EZCD. EZCD is even flakier under XP than in previous OS's. 5. Buy a Plextor CDR. 6. Update to latest very of clonecd 7. Update to latest ver of EZCD 5.0.2d or something. And the XP update.

Don't scare me like that. I thought there was an actual fix. No matter. XP is only used by me to port Application Compatibility patches to 2k.

In XP is it better to set ACPI to On or use Standard PC?
DosFreak replied to pr-man's topic in Hardware
Depends on the motherboard bios and the hardware involved. Generally if the hardware is unknown then Non-ACPI is best. That's the experience that I have had anyway. Less problems encountered. PNP OS has no effect on windows NT/2000/XP. -
Is a large harddrive a viable backup solution?
DosFreak replied to Nebuchadnezzar's topic in Hardware
I looked into tape backup DDS2/3/4. DDS 2/3 is too small and DDS/4 is too expensive/small/slow/requires another tape drive for what I need. I have 44GB of stuff I work on and that I need to backup. Right now I am using 2 60GB IBM IDE DMA/100 drives for backup. The 1st drive I use for the files and the second I backup to using MSBACKUP once a month. Just started doing this yesterday (before used to backup to ALOT of CDR's). I then disconnect the power cord from the second hard drive until the next backup. It took me 3 hours to backup to the hard drive but it worked perfectly requiring no intervention on my part the way a DDS2/3 tape drive would require. Also since my files are already highly compressed anyway even with hardware compression a tape drive wouldn't do me any good anyway. I would LOVE to be using SCSI/tape but I am an impatient person and also wasting that much money for backup just for me is insane. -
IIRC, my cracked copy works fine. Don't have the CD.

How does it compare to sniffers such as SNiffer Pro 4.5?
-
I will when I stick my Quad boot back on in the next 2 days. 2K will be my main OS and XP will be a distant memory.
-
Hmm, should work fine. Try clearing the temp directory. I don't think the Application Compatibility Updates at Microsoft have a fix for The Reckoning but they might.

Are you using the "Search" Function to browse your files? I noticed this too and it's really ,well you know the word, me off. It's researching the folder and also searching inside the .zip files. Haven't taken the time to tweak it or turn it off because I'm really tired of this OS. 2K going back on this weekend. Lemme know if what I described is what happens to you and I'll see if I wanna devote more time to it.

Hmmm, will have to stick in the game tonight but I don't remember there being any configuration options for video. Have you tried the latest Nvidia drivers?
-
Compatibility mode is not for DOS games. Make sure you configure the sound properly for each game. Windows XP's Sound emulation: SFX SB16 Port 200 IRQ=5 DMA=1 Day of the Tentacle (floppy) does not require any messing around with memory settings just sound. If your using the CD you may still experience sound problems. Sam & Max doesn't require any memory configuration either. Try VDMSound (link on main page) over XP's in inferior sound emulation. It may fix your problems and it also helps with not having to do as much memory configuration.
-
Hmmm, try apcompat.exe from the "Support Tools". Also have you tried the compatibility layer included with SP2? Right-click on the setup.exe, create a shortcut. Now right-click on the shortcut and choose the 95 compatibility layer.

What's the error? It runs fine over here.

The best mobo in the world isn't going to play Quake 3 at 70fps in 2048X1536 with an integrated video card.....
