    Anyone read this article?

heh? ATI has always made high end videocards with crappy drivers. The new Radeon didn't change that. They are supporting this rev of their new Radeon far more rapidly than their previous chipsets but speaking of previous chipsets is their support as good as Nvidia's/Matrox/3dfx's every was? No. A big resounding no.

    Recoil Installation

Download the Windows 2000 Application Compatibility Toolkit and check the 95/98 box. Or make a shortcut to the setup executable, right-click on shortcut and choose the 95 compatibility layer.

    Hogs of War

Read the documentation. It will explain everything. What error are you getting with Hogs of War?
  4. List your games. Disable sound and see if this affect speed. If so verify that yoiur sound settings are correct. If so then try VDMSound (a better sound emulator than XP's sound)
  5. I just downloaded the latest drivers from creative. Extracted 'em and loaded 'em through device manager.

Nvidia and Via chipset under XP

The only option that worked for me was the via latency patch. No other options ever worked except that....and I tried them all.
  7. Different brands of CDR discs are made differently thano other rands. There are websites which show the best CDR discs. I personally like Imations, Maxell's aren't too bad and Smart & Friendly's are TERRIBLE.

    Need DirectX 7.0 on NT 4.0 SP6a

MS only supports DX3 on NT4. Hacks were made to integrate DX5/6 into NT4 but they were hardly full implementations. The drivers for your video card themselves also have to implement higher DX functions which is why you don't see DX7/8 for NT4. So no. No DX7 for NT4.

    Anyone with Red Faction Problems?

DOH! This thread is about Red Faction not AVP2! Ignore my post above then......

    Anyone with Red Faction Problems?

I played the game upon release and it was buggy. memory usage exceeded 650+m at time (when I checked...may have gone higher) also it would chug at times due to the excessive memory usage so I would have to quit and reload. Also it would hang and I would have to ctrl+alt+del and reload. All in all from start to finish I would say I had to reload AVP2 20+ times due to it's bugginess. Fortunately it never once crashed windows itself so it was a simple matter to start the game back up again. Haven't tried the patch because I've already beaten the game.

Alt+Tab combo: can it be disabled in games?

IIRC, the Application Compatibility Toolkit includes this but I'm not at a computer (that has it installed) to verify.

XVI. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually ===================================================================== If you do not want Intelligent Updater to install the new virus definitions for you automatically, you can use the /DUMP command to extract the virus definition files, then copy the appropriate files to the virus definitions folder. Installing Virus Definition Files Manually -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Copy the Intelligent Updater program (mmddI16.EXE, mmddI161.EXE, mmddI32.EXE, or mmddN16.EXE) to an empty, temporary folder. 2. Launch the Intelligent Updater program using the /DUMP command. This will extract all the virus definitions to the folder. For example, type mmddI32.EXE /DUMP to extract the files. The mmdd represents the date of the definition set. For example, the filename would be 1231I32.EXE for the December 31 definition set. 3. Copy the files to the virus definition folder. If you are using Norton AntiVirus 4.0 or 5.0 for Windows 95 / Windows NT Server & Workstation, copy the files to this location: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs\Incoming\ NOTE: Copy the file ZDONE.DAT last. This file signals Norton AntiVirus that the definition set has been completely loaded. If it is not loaded last, it may cause errors. 4. Refer to the Intelligent Updater File List below for information on which files to copy into the Norton AntiVirus folder.

    Why was my thread locked?

Windows Media Player 8 for Windows 2000 includes files taken from Windows XP. I know because when WMP8 was included in the betas of XP, I was basically the one who ripped it out and posted instructions on how to do it. I only did it to see if it could be done and since I do not use Windows Media Player I gave the instructions to a couple of people I know and they continued the project. Posting links to Windows Media Player 8 is not allowed due to 2 simple facts: 1. The package is mostly if not fully composed of files taken from Windows XP. If your read the EULA distribution of these files separate from the CD is not allowed. Therefore any inclusion of these files into a separate package is illegal. Since NTCompatible is a high profile site referenced by such magazines as PCGamer/Windows 2000 Magazine and across the net for NTCompatible help it's obvious why SHS does not want it posted here. 2. This is Phillip's site. Not yours. His. If he say's it goes. It goes. You don't like it? Go to iexbeta or alt.binaries or whatever IRC site you want to post links to unofficial software.

Try VDMSound (link on front page). Only use XP's sound emulation when playing Doom/Build engine games.

    Battlezone II under win 2k

What's the problem? Over here I just stick in the CD. Install. Update to latest patch. Play. Worked in Windows 2000 from my TNT1, G400, Geforce 2 GTS, Geforce 3, to my Geforce 3 Ti500.

*.msc files are used with the MMC program. IIRC, they are already in the MMC list. Just do a start/run/mmc and then do an add.

Will there be life after SP3?

Companies will be using Windows 2000 at least as long as NT4....if not longer. For instance the military and many other businesses who made the jump to 2k aren't even using Active Directory yet! There is absolutely no reason for them to jump all over XP. Currently from where I'm sitting I've heard nary a word on upgrading to XP. YAY!

    Does linux suck or what?

*nix has only one direction to go. Up. Microsoft has finally merged it's home/work versions of Windows into the same codebase. Making gaming on home versions and work versions the same. This makes it far simpler for Linux to gain a foothold than the way it was before. Emulation is progression far more rapidly than it has before. (Look at the latest versions of Connectix VPC or Vmware) and I read recently that 3DMark 2001 has been run under Linux in the 5000 3DMarks category. That's a major accomplishment for compatibility for Directx games in Linux right there. Look at the latest version of Windows XP. Now think what else could Microsoft possibily do for us in a home OS besides more Torture? Now look at Linux. Think about it. It's gonna be great in the coming years.

    Does linux suck or what?

shassouneh referring to your PM...... You are using the integrated NIC/Sound on the motherboard correct? and you are not using any other PCI NIC/Sound cards? If so then Mandrake sounds like it found the correct hardware. I am unsure how that hardware performs under Linux but in my friends system the sound was crackly in Windows 2000 and would eat up ALOT of processor performance. Also the onboard NIC would eat up massive ammounts of processor usage making LAN gaming terrible. If Mandrake 8.1 does not support that sound card then you may be out of luck. Mandrake is a highly updated Linux Distro that includes many of the latest drivers. You may be able to find the drivers for the NIC/Sound on the net but I doubt it since the NIC/Sound are integrated into the motherboard they aren't as easy to find as PCI drivers. Common sound cards such as Netgear PCI Nics and Sound Blaster Live! sound cards have been long supported under Linux. But as you can tell by my comments above integrated sound/NIC products get very little support....if any under Linux due to the low popularity of integrated products in the Linux market. Those sorts of integrated products are used mainly by the Windows crowd or by those buying a new computer and not knowing what's inside of them (like my friend ). Try giving the NIC a static IP address and see if you can get it networked that way. That way you can determine if it's a DHCP problem or some other problem such as your NIC drivers. As for the sound card see if you can force the sound to be used. There may be another sound card listed that's close enough to your model that sound may work for you. Vmware is not free and must be bought. You can download the latest versions of Windows/Linux from the Vmware website. You will need to contact Vmware to get a License to use Vmware however. As for Wine....I haven't really gotten into that emulator as of yet. I'm still waiting for it to bake a bit more before I can put some time into it. Gaming in Linux still hasn't reached the level of Windows yet and since I am so busy it's far from as simple as double-clicking setup and playing your game! Just follow the instructions and you'll get it working. You've already chosen the easiest Linux Distro to work with so your mostly there already!
